Creative racism?

Last night, a tweet appeared on Sarawak BNYV’s Twitter account stating: “Sedar2lah ‘orang kita’. Walau Taib banyak tanah di Sarawak tok. Sekurang-kurangnya baguslah milik bumiputera dari jatuh ke orang ca-ya-nun-alif.

(Our people should realise, although Taib owns a lot of land in Sarawak, at least it is owned by a bumiputera and not by the ca-ya-nun-alif.)

“Ca-ya-nun-alif” is the phonetic spelling for the Jawi script that is read as “C.I.N.A.”.

BN Youth Volunteers (BNYV) has apologised for a tweet with racial undertones that appeared on the Twitter account of the group’s Sarawak chapter.

(Spearheaded by BN Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, BNYV was launched last year, aimed at recruiting BN supporters for campaigning efforts – both on the ground and online.)

In a press release today, BNYV director Zaidel Baharuddin said the errant tweet was not BNYV’s official stand.

“I have been informed by our Sarawak counterparts that several individuals have access to that said (Twitter) account, thus there are weaknesses in controlling statements issued from that account,” he explained.

However, Zaidel noted that this was not a credible explanation, and thus BNYV apologises for the incident.
