COMMENT By threatening to revoke the citizenship of Ambiga Sreevaasan, former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad continues his tirade and insults all Indian Malaysians. Earlier, Mahathir irked Malaysians when he was caught denying his alleged key role for 20 years in the illegal issuing of blue ICs and granting voting rights to illegal immigrants to Sabah.

In the October 2012 parliament sitting, the MP for Pasir Salak proposed that Ambiga should be hanged for committing treason against the king for organising Bersih 2.0 and Bersih 3.0. Umno leaders just could not accept the fact that Ambiga, an Indian Malaysian lady, could organise such mammoth gatherings that challenged the unjust, anti-national and subversive activities of Umno.

Malaysia will be ruined if BN regains a two-third majority as requested by Mahathir Mohamad.

All Indians with dignity, pride and honour will never support the political parties that support Mahathir and his apartheid policy. Mahathir could justify and find nothing seditious when Ibrahim Ali urged his supporters to burn the Malay Bible. But he could not accept Ambiga’s appeal for clean and fair election and deems it treacherous.

Not one MIC or MCA leader has come out to condemn Mahathir’s urging to strip Ambiga of her citizenship. No sensible, sane, thinking Malaysians will ever support BN in the 13th general election.

COMMENT The truth is I enjoy writing about former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad. His lies and distortions reveal far more about the Malaysian psyche than anything said by the rest of the political elite (BN and Pakatan Rakyat) in this country.Mahathir’s latest threat about needing a two-thirds majority to amend the constitution to kick out Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga (right) is not merely a threat against Ambiga but against anyone who dares threaten the Umno status quo.

It shows anyone what Umno has in store for those who have the temerity to exercise their democratic rights or should that be, fight for their democratic rights. However, why the need to strip recalcitrant Malaysians of their citizenship? Anyone who has read the Sosma would have discovered that it is just as pernicious as the ISA. Cold Storage not good enough any more?

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 — Lawyers today criticised Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for saying the Federal Constitution should be amended to revoke the citizenship of a government dissident, telling the former prime minister that this would be against the spirit of the country’s highest law.

Legal experts contacted by The Malaysian Insider also reminded Dr Mahathir, who was the country’s longest-serving prime minister, that an individual’s citizenship is one of the most basic human rights to Malaysians.

They said this right could not be so easily revoked due to safeguards in the Federal Constitution.

What Dr Mahathir is suggesting would undermine the spirit and structure of the Constitution,” constitutional expert Syahredzan Johan told The Malaysian Insider.

Syahredzan explained that there are certain provisions in the document forming the “basic structure” of the Constitution which cannot be amended, and if amended, the amendment itself would be unconstitutional.

“What those provisions are, are not defined. But generally, it is said that provisions that give rights to individuals cannot and should not be taken away,” the lawyer said, adding that citizenship is one of those rights.

Even though it is hypothetically possible to amend the Constitution, Syahredzan stressed that the framers of the Constitution had placed safeguards to make sure that it will not be tampered with.

Bersih says Dr Mahathir Mohamad should not make threats to revoke S Ambiga’s citizenship.

PETALING JAYA: Bersih wants former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to retract his statement that the federal constitution must be amended to revoke the citizenship of “errant lawyers” like Bar Council leaders and Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga.

Bersih, a coalition of non-governmental organization fighting for free and fair elections, said Ambiga did not deserve such a comment.

“What did Ambiga do to deserve such comments. There is nothing wrong in wanting a free and fair election. We just want for the government to deliver what the rakyat want,” Bersih steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah told FMT.

Amend constitution to strip Ambiga’s citizenship’

The government needs to amend the constitution if it wants to strip off the citizenship of lawyers such as Bersih co-chair S Ambiga who go against the government.

“To strip a person’s citizenship, you need to amend the constitution. And to amend the constitution you need two-thirds majority in Parliament,” said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today.

“So, I ask that you give two-thirds majority to the BN government,” Mahathir said, in response to a question after giving a talk on national security and the constitution in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur today.

He was asked how the government would go about stripping away the citizenship of errant lawyers like Bar Council leaders and Ambiga, who continued to challenge the government and question the constitution.
