Zaid: Patrick wasn’t ranting against Islam

The former minister says prohibiting views would lead to the end of freedom of expression.

PETALING JAYA: Founding president of Kita, Zaid Ibrahim has defended actor and former radio deejay Patrick Teoh by arguing that the latter had only ranted against the PAS-led Kedah government officials, and not Islam.

The state government had made a dress code ruling against officials and singers who would be attending 1Malaysia Chinese New Year celebration on Feb 15 in Alor Setar.

As a result of that Teoh shot to infamy after he posted a Facebook status that was deemed as insensitive to Muslims. Teoh has since apologised over the offensive posting.

“I had a quick look at his Facebook page to see what the fuss was about, and I have to say I did not see anything that warrants criminal prosecution.

“He was ranting and using inappropriate language of course, which was rather thoughtless and insensitive of him, but his words were directed at some Muslims leaders in Kedah.

“He was insulting these leaders in particular, which is not the same thing as insulting Islam. We must learn to distinguish between the religion and its administrators,” said Zaid who was a former minister in his blog.

What he wrote.

Teoh, who has starred in local movies such as “Nasi Lemak 2.0”, “Buli” and “The Red Kebaya”, had drawn flak over the offending Facebook post in which he criticised the Kedah government’s January 9 guidelines for the state’s upcoming 1 Malaysia Chinese New Year event, which dictated, among others, the appropriate attire for officials, stage performers and choice of songs and dances.

His retraction and apology

“Whoa!!!…whoa…whoa…I now realise what I did that was wrong and why it generated so much hate-mail. I had thought that the criticism came from my use of the phrase, ‘Quran-thumping m***** F*****…’ I was wrong. It came from my reference to ‘Give up individuality and be sheep? Pray 5 times a day? Cover up all women?’ which was totally out of line. It didn’t convey what I was trying to say in the post and came out like a bigoted selfish statement. For that I apologise sincerely to all Muslims. Minta maaf. But I do not apologise for calling that person a… well you know what I mean. I hope.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 19 ― The Malaysian Multimedia and Communications Commission (MCMC) has questioned actor and former radio deejay Patrick Teoh over a Facebook post that excoriated PAS for its Chinese New Year rules in Kedah, sources say.

The Malaysian Insider understands that MCMC officers recorded Teoh’s statement yesterday but did not state whether he had committed any offence by posting the comments or if he would be charged, saying they would first need to review his remarks before deciding on the next course of action.

“MCMC had recorded his statement and a few of our officers have completed the process,” one source told The Malaysian Insider.

Another source confirmed the interview, saying it came after protests over the comments made in the celebrity’s Facebook social networking account.

When contacted, Teoh said he had no comment to make for the moment.

Actor and famous radio presenter Patrick Teoh lands himself in hot soup after a Facebook posting insensitive to Muslims.

PETALING JAYA: Actor and famous radio presenter Patrick Teoh landed himself in hot water today after a Facebook posting which has infuriated Muslims.
…………..

Below is his Facebook posting posted yesterday:

“The 3rd most laughable statement discovered today…

The January 9 guidelines to the organisers of the 1 Malaysia Chinese New Year Celebration 2013 (by the PAS Kedah state government)… included, among other things, the appropriate attire for officials and singers. It also stated that performers are encouraged to sing motivational songs and that if extreme singing and dancing activities were to take place, the state government has the right to shut down the programme.

Encouraged to sing motivational songs!!! What kind of f**king motivation they want? Give up individuality and be sheep? Pray 5 times a day? Cover up all women? What???!!!

And while they are at it, please tell us what the f**k extreme singing and dancing is?

Quran-thumping mother f**kers!!!”

……………….

However, about an hour ago Teoh apologised for the earlier comment.

His apology states:

‘Whoa!!!… whoa… whoa… I now realise what I did that was wrong and why it generated so much hate-mail. I had thought that the criticism came from my use of the phrase, “Quran-thumping m***** F*****…” I was wrong. It came from my reference to “Give up individuality and be sheep? Pray 5 times a day? Cover up all women?” which was totally out of line. It didn’t convey what I was trying to say in the post and came out like a bigoted selfish statement. For that I apologise sincerely to all Muslims. Minta maaf (Sorry). But I do not apologise for calling that person a…well you know what I mean. I hope.”

The apology which can be viewed on his facebook page.

He has also taken down the original post.
