I came to appreciate cats at a late age. Well, better late than never!

GEORGE TOWN: Two cats tried to leap to safety from a burning unit on the 14th floor of a flat in Bukit Jambul here – but ended up dead, much to the heartbreak of their owner.
A third cat died after getting trapped in the living room and was believed to have suffocated in the incident at about 3.30pm.
Restaurant worker Suraya Ismail, 28, who rushed back to her rented unit upon receiving a call about the fire, broke into tears after firefighters told her about her cats.
“What happened to my cats?” a distraught Suraya asked the firefighters when she stepped into the flat yesterday.
Suraya said her cats had been with her even before she moved into the unit four months ago.
“Daniel was a year old, Eddy, eight months and Shasha just a month old
“I found Daniel by the roadside a year ago when he was still a kitten and I’ve been taking care of all the three cats.
“I’m sad that my belongings are destroyed but I’m more heartbroken to learn that my cats are now gone,” she sobbed, adding that she did not plan to adopt any cats anytime soon.

The first cat I had was Cat Cat but she wasn’t mine!
Cat Cat hung around my front yard several times. I ignored her. One day, when my son, Scott, came back, the cat made friends with him. Scott used my car during that time. After he left, the cat came to visit. She sat on top of the car Scott had been using.
I wasn’t inclined to be friendly, so I sprayed her with the hose. She left but hung around.
Cat Cat was intelligent and persistent.
She left a dead shrew in front of my door. That’s an offering of friendship! How could I refuse? Thus, we took her in, and fed her. She was choosy about her food, preferring canned fish. She slept all day and disappeared at night. Next morning, she would be back, waiting when I opened the door at 6.45am.
We adored Cat Cat.
We bathed her once as we wanted to avoid fleas. She was so patient while we bathed her. No protest, no snarling, no attempt to get away!
Look at those green eyes!
Cat Cat is the most beautiful cat I have ever seen. She was almost an adult when she came. We learnt later that she lived 3 doors away, and when they let her out of her cage, she ran off and did not return for days.
Cat Cat was part Persian, which meant that she grew BIG. It also accounted for her bushy tail.
She was super intelligent.
One night, Mum said, “Stop sitting around. Go do something useful. I hate lizards, so go catch them!”
Cat Cat left, but was back in a few minutes. She dropped a lizard in front of Mum. Ugh! Yikes! Be careful what you ask a cat for! That was the last time Mum asked for a lizard.
Here is Cat Cat with a lizard.
Cat Cat could be playful.
One day, she got hold of a toilet roll and messed up the hall. Later, she lay asleep, clutching the remnants.
I tried removing the toilet roll but she seized my hand in her jaws! I could feel the sharp teeth! The snarl from her throat was frightening. Those soft, green eyes turned ferocious! She watched me.
“Sorry, Cat Cat, sorry,” I blurted out.
When I let go of the roll, she let go of my hand. I had to wait till she had gone out before clearing up the mess.
Cat Cat went away
Cat Cat was a free agent. She didn’t stay for long. Mum saw her at the home of a friend three roads away. The children there loved her, and maybe that made the difference. Cats want companionship when they’re home and we were seldom home.
One day, our son, Jamie, and Mum, brought home a little kitten from the SPCA. We named him Kitty Poo.
On the 2nd day, Cat Cat paid us an unexpected visit, and she hissed fiercely when she saw Kitty Poo. She left angrily.
Weeks later, when Cat Cat came by and saw Kitty Poo with me out in the compound, she hissed, turned around, and ran off. She never returned.
Do cats get jealous?
GOODBYE CAT CAT
One day, the family with whom Cat Cat had taken up residence returned to find Cat Cat lying in their front yard, foaming at the mouth! The poor darling had been poisoned. It was too late to do anything, and the vet could only shake his head….
