What used to be a 10-minute walk has now changed to 40 minutes as pedestrians were unable to walk across Jalan Pudu, along the former Pudu jail.

Pedestrians complain of long trudge after Jalan Pudu sinkhole

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Pedestrians have blamed the authorities for the lack of planning by having to walk a long distance to reach their destinations following the sinkhole incident in Jalan Pudu on Wednesday.

They said they have to risk their lives and valuables by taking the alternative route laid out by City Hall.

Two sinkholes have caused traffic chaos at the Jalan Pudu-Jalan Imbi traffic lights intersection, where a 35m-long underground road tunnel to connect Pudu north and Pudu south was being built by City Hall.

A visit by Malay Mail yesterday found pedestrians facing a tough time walking from the Hang Tuah monorail and LRT stations to Berjaya Times Square — made worse with the high weekend traffic, hot weather and ongoing construction works.

Student Mohd Fazrul Khaidir, 20, said he and his friends were forced to walk from Jalan Hang Tuah, to the back of the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters in Jalan Pudu, before cutting across the road and walking back towards Jalan Imbi and their journey towards Melia Hotel.

Customer service officer Lowell Yong, 25, said she was forced to take the longer route since the sinkhole incident occurred. She takes the LRT to work and stops at the Hang Tuah station before continuing her journey on foot to Jalan Bukit Bintang.

“It used to be an easy walk across Jalan Pudu but now I am forced to take a long walk,” she said.

Yong said her new route was inconvenient and pedestrians, including tourists who often flocked the area, risked being hit by traffic or falling victims to snatch theft as they were forced to walk along the busy road.

A City Hall spokesman said the matter would only be resolved once construction work in the area was completed. The tunnel is expected to be ready by December.

“In the meantime, pedestrians have to make do with the current condition,” he said.

Triple whammy for KL-ites

Chaos in the heart of the city: Traffic seen clogged up from Jalan Hang Tuah to Jalan Imbi after two huge sinkholes appeared in the busy area of Kuala Lumpur yesterday morning.

Chaos in the heart of the city: Traffic seen clogged up from Jalan Hang Tuah to Jalan Imbi after two huge sinkholes appeared in the busy area of Kuala Lumpur yesterday morning.

KUALA LUMPUR: People living and working at the busy Golden Triangle here experienced a triple whammy after part of a road adjacent to the construction of an underground tunnel collapsed at the junction of Jalan Imbi and Jalan Pudu.

Motorists were caught in a massive traffic snarl while the monorail service from the Imbi and Hang Tuah stations was suspended indefinitely for safety precautions.

To make things worse, there was an unscheduled water disruption in the area due to a burst pipe apparently caused by the sinkholes near the upcoming Pudu Underpass project by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

Earlier yesterday, two sinkholes were separately formed at about 10.30am and 12.20pm following the collapse of part of the road.

The condition worsened as a further cave-in caused the two sinkholes to merge into a huge indentation hours later.

Commuters of the LRT Ampang line were forced to exit at the Imbi monorail station and proceed to the Hang Tuah LRT and monorail interchange.

A new minor depression was discovered about 1m away from the first on Thursday and similar rectification work is being carried out there as well.

Additionally, a sinkhole, measuring 10m in length, 3.5m wide and about 2m deep, appeared in the same location as the two earlier soil depressions at 10.42pm on Thursday night.

Club shut for a week and event cancelled after Umno Youth and PAS protest

KUALA LUMPUR: A club, which was to host a “topless” pool party in Jalan Ampang on April 11, has been shut down for a week and its event cancelled by City Hall.

This came after an outcry by Umno Youth and PAS, calling for authorities to stop the event, which called on party goers to show up in bikinis and boy shorts, or less, and where alcoholic prizes were reportedly to be given for the “best dirty dancers”.

City mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib confirmed that the authorities had thrown a blanket over the topless party, saying the club, The Pool KL, did not have a licence to host such an event.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor ordered the club to cease operations for a week pending investigations and said DBKL would also be issuing a show-cause letter to the operators.

“If we find their response unsatisfactory, we may shut down the place permanently,” Tengku Adnan said.

Umno Youth: No, they can’t go topless at The Pool in KL!

The party was scheduled for this Friday at The Pool, an entertainment outlet in the city that professes on its website to hold the “best pool parties in town”.

The poster for the event also cited the dress code as “bikinis/boy shorts (lesser the better)”, but it is unclear if the event will live up to its “topless” billing.

When contacted, a representative of The Pool declined to confirm the event had been cancelled as claimed by Umno Youth and asked for time to check with its management.

‘Topless Beach Party’ is off, says Umno Youth

KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 8 — A “Topless Beach Party” this Friday has been cancelled following orders from Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Umno Youth said today.

Following complaints from the Federal Territories Umno Youth, the wing claimed that the Federal Territories minister had ordered the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to use “every power at its disposal” to shut down the event.

However, it did not state the rationale for such order, and whether the order has followed proper procedures and laws.

“Immoral parties such as this must be opposed by everybody so that it would not be a trend among the youths, especially Muslims, because it can destroy the faith of the community,” wing deputy chief Khairul Azwan Harun said in a statement.

The wing also warned event organisers to not hold any such events in the future to respect the culture and manners of the locals.

Earlier today, Islamist party and Umno rival PAS had also called for a crackdown on the event, claiming that authorities were empowered to intervene in the event.

A RAT-HUNTING CAMPAIGN, THAT’S WHAT THEY NEED AT GSC MID VALLEY.

Program basmi tikus diketuai oleh ahli majlis MPSJ di Pangsapuri SS19 – jumlah 31 ekor tikus

*AN ENCOUNTER WITH A RAT THAT WOULD HAVE BITTEN MY FOOT IF I HADN’T HAVE MY BLANKET OVER MY FEET.

*EARLY ONE MORNING, as I lay in bed fast asleep, I was woken up by something jumping onto my left foot. It felt large. Just as I wondered if I were dreaming, it hopped onto my right foot.

“A rat!” was my first thought. I pulled my pillow from under my head and threw it at the ‘thing’, shouting, “Get off me!”

I sat up and saw it running past me. It was a big rat. It shot out of my bedroom and into my eldest son’s bedroom, which was empty. From there, it shot into the bathroom.

That was the beginning of the end of that rat.

I shut the door, went downstairs and put on my shoes. Then, cane in hand, I swept at it as it cowered inside the bathroom. One flick of the cane and it fell onto its side. Three successive whacks, followed by a stamp, and that was it.

Time to clean up the mess and wrap the vermin in a plastic bag. Then, straight into the rubbish bin with it.

RATS ALIVE! She got bitten while watching a movie at a Golden Screen Cinema (GSC) at Mid Valley.

PETALING JAYA: It was a painful night out for Chrisanne Chin and her family after her toe got bitten by a rat while she was watching a movie at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) Mid Valley on Wednesday.

The Council of Churches of Malaysia Youth Head and Exco member felt a sharp jab on her toe and immediately cried out in pain just as the movie was at its climactic end.

She was shocked when the lights came on and saw blood oozing from her toe.

“Once that happened, we went to the staff immediately and they brought a first aid kit to clean the wound. I also filed an official complaint with GSC. The management was also kind as they refunded our movie tickets.

“Rat bites are dangerous as their saliva or mucus are deadly, as lethal as their urine. I couldn’t leave the hospital without the dressing and anti-tetanus jab.

“They told me to send my medical bill to them,” said Chin who also does movie reviews for Movie and TV database website Rotten Tomatoes.

Outsiders refer to it as the Kampung Seri Pandan Squatter Settlement, but the residents prefer Kampung Pandan Manalmedu.

The 80-odd families residing there, mostly Indians, live in makeshift sheds and odd structures that one could perhaps refer to as tents. In any case, they look nothing like what one could properly call “houses” and their condition is deplorable.

KL records 53,000 road accidents for this year

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 4, 2013): More than 52,000 accidents were recorded in the city until October this year, revealing an increase of 5% in the number of road accidents compared to last year.

Kuala Lumpur Road Safety Department Director Muhd Heeza Hassan said this increase is mainly attributed to the attitude of motorists who continue to ignore the importance of road safety.

“City traffic police records show that there have been 52,908 road accidents throughout Kuala Lumpur as of October this year, claiming 190 lives. Last year, 50,176 accidents were recorded during the same period.

Two million people live in KL, with eight million rats
1:35PM Sep 20, 2013

There are four rats to every person living in Kuala Lumpur. The city’s mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib revealed this yesterday, during a campaign trail to tackle the arising health risk from rats..

The KL City Hall (DBKL) estimates that there are eight million rats living in the country’s capital city compared to two million people, Berita Harian reported today.

“If in Australia and New Zealand there are more cows than people, we instead have to face the fact that we have more rats here,” the newspaper quotes Ahmad Phesal as saying.

However, the blame for the rodent issue lies squarely on restaurants and hawkers who are carelessly chucking leftover food and cooking oil into back alleys, the drains and rivers

No sympathy for errant cabbies

Consumers lash out at taxi drivers, but only the unreasonable ones

KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers have little or no sympathy for taxi drivers who protested their working conditions and brought traffic in the heart of the city to a standstill.

While conceding that not all taxi drivers were unreasonable, commuters said many of them refused to use the meter and charged exorbitant flat rates while others chose where they were willing to go and by which route.

They were responding to the action of about 100 taxi drivers who gathered in Jalan Bukit Bintang from 3pm to 7pm on Tuesday to voice their grievances, including the introduction of the free GO-KL buses which they said affected their business.

They also complained of being harassed by SPAD, the Land Public Transport Commission, which they said restricted parking and pick-up areas.

Detractors of the taxi drivers are not confined to locals. At least two international websites have nothing good to say about them.

KUALA LUMPUR: Many netizens have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration over the poor state of taxi services in the city.

Recalling their experiences, some said the free bus service here which the taxi drivers had rallied against could co-exist with the taxis.

Others urged the drivers to buck up and called on the irresponsible ones to stop flouting traffic laws and regulations. Many Twitter users also created a hashtag #TaxiVsGoKL to discuss the issue.

Thieves targeting tyres and other car parts

A DIFFERENT kind of theft is taking place now and it does not involve the whole car, just the tyres and other parts.

The thieves are targeting car tyres, bumpers and insignias instead of the whole car because most are equipped with vehicle tracking devices, alarms and automatic fuel cut-off with Geo Fence Global Positioning System.

Selangor MCA Public Complaints Bureau deputy head Kelvin Chong said there was an increase in theft of tyres in Petaling Jaya and that the incidents usually occurred in the wee hours of the morning.

“The latest incidents were at Jalan 21/20 and Jalan 21/27. The two victims had parked their cars outside the main gates of their houses and were shocked to see the tyres and rims missing in the morning, at about 6am. The cars were being held up with bricks,” he said.

Chong said wheels with expensive rims were targeted by the thieves.

“These cost more than RM1,300 each and easy to remove. Within 90 seconds, thieves can remove two wheels with a cordless pneumatic torque wrench,” he added.

He said in most cases the thefts occurred between 3am to 5.30am and that some cases go unreported.

SPAD orders full audit of monorail system

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has ordered a full audit of the monorail system within one week after the inner city rail line failed twice this month, raising questions over the reliability of Klang Valley’s public transport even as the federal government dishes out lucrative tenders for the infrastructure projects.

The state-owned Prasarana monorail system first broke down last Saturday evening right after train carriages left the Tun Sambanthan station for the Maharajalela station, leaving 183 passengers stranded high above the city roads without air-conditioning for about an hour, which caused one passenger to faint and two others to suffer breathing difficulties before they were rescued by fire and emergency personnel.

The monorail system stalled again yesterday for 45 minutes during the morning rush hour at 8.35am, this time trapping 200 passengers in a train bound for Bukit Bintang from Imbi station which encountered a technical glitch and stopped in the middle of the track.

“Since this is the second time that it’s happened, we will be conducting a full audit of the monorail system within one week,” SPAD chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar told The Malaysian Insider.

‘Swaying’ MRR2 rattles motorists

August 17, 2012

A support beam along the MRR2 is pictured in Kepong during the 2008 repair works.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — The level of safety at the Middle Ring Road (MRR2) here is being questioned again by several anxious users who claimed two viaducts on the 35km expressway “swayed” during heavy traffic. They alleged that the situation at the expressway, once regarded as extraordinary, could be clearly felt on the viaducts in Kepong and the Flamingo Hotel junction in Ampang, during heavy traffic.

According to Mohd Rizal Azman, 30, the swaying on the viaduct in Kepong was repeatedly felt especially when the number of vehicles increased and during rain.

Mohd Rizal, who stays in Flora Damansara and often uses the route to send his wife to her place of work in Selayang, said the swaying incident was extraordinary compared to the shaking he often felt prior to this.

“I use the route almost every day; other than sending my wife to work, I also use the expressway to go to my father’s house in Batu Caves every weekend.

“I admit the viaduct will shake during heavy traffic, that is normal, but the swaying felt lately is very different and it is like a mini earthquake which makes us feel like we are swinging,” he told Bernama, here, today.

The anxiety was shared by former chairman of the Malaysian Press Institute Datuk Seri Azman Ujang, who regarded the incident as abnormal and needed the immediate attention of the authorities concerned.

He said the experience he went through last Wednesday night was quite disturbing because it felt as though the viaduct was moving.

……….
Azman, who is also former general manager of the Malaysian National News Organisation (Bernama), said he hoped the situation could be monitored immediately.

He said the Public Works Department and Kuala Lumpur City Hall, which were responsible for the expressway, must review the strength of the viaducts.

A monorail train broke down and was left stopped in its tracks over Brickfields today, requiring two fire trucks to evacuate passengers from the train by fire ladder.

According to an eyewitness account, an estimated fifty passengers were on the train, split over two coaches.

Fire fighters arrived around 2.39pm this afternoon, setting up ladders from the fire trucks to rescue passengers.

The fire department evacuated passengers from the stranded coaches beginning 2.59pm, prioritizing women and children.

Reportedly, two girls passed out during the evacuation, with one brought to a hospital.

Monorail training aided rescue ops

KUALALUMPUR: KL StarRail Sdn Bhd, the operatorofKLMonorailServices, saiditsemergency response training allowed for a smooth rescue of 183 people stuck in a stalled monorail for nearly an hour on Saturday.

Chief operating officer Abdul Hadi Amran said all passengers were taken to safety in the first ever train-to-train evacuation. The train had stopped near Brickfields.

“We had yesterday’s situation under control and got everybody out safely, including rushing three passengers requiring medical attention to Kuala Lumpur Hospital. We thank God there were no casualties or serious injuries.

“Clearly, the team benefited from our emergency response procedure training that we conduct every year with the Fire and Rescue Department, police, hospitals, St John Ambulance and Rela.”

Hadi defended the action taken by train driver Mohd Faizal Mohd Fahmi, saying he had done the right thing in refusing to open the train doors despite complaints from passengers after the air-conditioning was turned off.
“This is because the train was on a curve and in a slanting position.

“It was at a height of no less than 30ft  (9.1m). It would have been  dangerous to have the doors open, especially when it  was almost at full capacity. Passengers could have fallen out.”

He said the driver had followed standard operating procedure by not allowing passengers to break the windows and let in air, as it would  jeopardise rescue operations.
