27 June 2017

Since this past week, suicide has been more than of academic interest or bad news. It has become personal.

An ex student and friend died. He attempted to take hi life, survived for a week in intensive care, but died.

His funeral is today.

SUICIDE IS A LOSE-LOSE SOLUTION FOR YOU! If you succeed, you’re dead and your family has to deal with the messy consequences. If you fail, you may be charged for a crime.

IN MALAYSIA, AN ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE IS A CRIMINAL OFFENCE. The penalties are harsh. If you are charged in court under Section 309, and convicted, you face a jail sentence of up to a year, or a fine, or both.

IN SINGAPORE, IT IS ALSO A CRIMINAL OFFENCE.

This woman failed and now pays the consequences: a fine and the stigma attached to a failed suicidal attempt…

We hope that she received counseling.

WHEN SOMEONE REALLY WANTS TO KILL HIMSELF…

Body of man whose suicide note went viral found

The body of the man who jumped off the Second Penang bridge on Wednesday, after purportedly posting a suicide note on Facebook, has been found today.

In the lengthy suicide note which went viral, Mohd Sukri Saad, 38, said that he was being oppressed by a “cruel government”, adding that he was to be charged for selling RM360 worth of contraband cigarettes.

Facing possible jail time and hefty fines, the man admitted that though he was guilty, the punishment was far too heavy for the crime.

Towards the end of the note, he also implored PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang not to be tricked by Umno, claiming that the ruling party is only pretending to support Hadi’s private member’s bill seeking to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965.

“Don’t be tricked by Umno’s leadership, they’re just pretending to support the your bill so that the opposition will be fractured.

“Go back to the opposition so that you’ll become a strong opposition, so that the fates of rakyat like myself will be protected.

“Once you’ve become the ruling government, you will control the media and it will be easy to convince the rakyat about your bill,” he said.

BUTTERWORTH: A 35-year-old lorry attendant died after falling off a moving lorry with a rope around his neck.

The incident occurred when the vehicle was arriving at the Prai Industrial Zone near here at about 3.45pm Thursday.

ACP Nik Ros said the man’s wife told police that her husband had undergone treatment at the psychiatric hospital in Tanjung Rambutan, Perak, three years ago.

Man Jumps Off Penang Bridge After Caught Selling RM360 Illegal Cigarettes, His Suicide Note On Facebook Goes Viral

zas

Moments before he took his own life by jumping off the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge in Penang this morning, a tragic note was typed on Facebook by the man identified as Mohd Shukri Saad.

The 38-year-old man who owned a sundry shop in Tasek Gelugor, Butterworth, left his Modenas motorcycle with the registration plate PHM 6667, slippers and mobile phone before jumping off the bridge in the wee hours of the morning, but they were only discovered at 8.30am, today.

In his lengthy Facebook note, Mohd Shukri lamented his frustrations after the Customs Department seized RM360 worth of illegal cigarettes. He was arrested twice and brought to court, even ordered to pay thousands for bail money and fines, and may suffer a jail sentence.

“Today, I have made my decision not to attend the court hearing as I have no money, too many responsibilities for me to bear and I cannot bear to be imprisoned,” he wrote, saying he did not want to let his children be called “a convict’s child”.

“I choose to end my life as I have had dreams of drowning in the ocean… let me sacrifice my life for every Malaysian,” the note read, as he took to condemn the government over his punishment which he deemed is not befitting of his crime.

Fire and Rescue Department operational commander Isharuddin Ismail said the department received a call at 8.40am about a man who had believed to plunge in KM11.3 of the bridge towards Batu Maung.

A team of 12 officers and firefighters from Sungai Bakap Fire Station and the Marine Fire Units have been dispatched to the scene and a search and rescue operation is still ongoing.

40 in-patient suicides reported in government hospitals from 2012-2014

PUTRAJAYA: There were 40 cases of in-patient suicide reported at government hospitals from 2012 to last year, based on statistics from the health ministry’s internal surveillance system, incident reporting and learning system.

In a statement today, the ministry said in-patient suicide or attempted suicide was an unfortunate event that occurred in hospitals due to many factors. The factors include the patient’s clinical condition, environmental safety, safety culture, busy wards, insufficient staff and lack of understanding of patient safety.

The ministry said it viewed the matter seriously although the number of cases were very small, in comparison to the number of the ministry’s hospital admissions. Therefore, it had produced the Guideline on Suicide Risk Management in Hospitals to address the issue.

Rising suicide: National awareness needed

Section 309 of the Penal Code criminalizes a person for attempting suicide in Malaysia, but is this right or even humane?

Suicide rates are on the rise in Malaysia. According to the National Suicide Registry, there was an average of two suicides a day in 2011. … Section 309 of the Penal Code criminalizes a person for attempting suicide in Malaysia. It carries a sentence of up to one year in prison, or a fine, or both if found guilty. … Debunking suicide myths What can we do to prevent suicide? We can start by debunking the common suicide myths in an effort to reduce the stigma of suicide in our society. Myth: People who talk about suicide will not actually do it? Fact: No! They will. They will not talk about it otherwise. Myth: People who are contemplating suicide are unwilling to seek help? Fact: No! They are. They just do not know how. Myth: Once people decide to kill themselves, nothing can stop them? Fact: No! There is something. It is called genuine emotional support. Myth: Talking about suicide will give people the idea of doing it? Fact: No! It will not. Talking about suicide will actually stop people from doing it. Myth: People who are contemplating suicide are lacking of religious faith? Fact:  No! Not necessarily. Exceptionally religious people commit suicide too. Offering emotional support Equipping ourselves with the knowledge on suicide warning signs and ways to support a person who is contemplating suicide will help in preventing many tragic deaths as well. Befrienders Worldwide list the following as the common suicide warning signs:

  • regularly making remarks such as “I cannot go on,” “Nothing matters anymore,” or “I want to end it all”
  • becoming depressed or withdrawn
  • writing about suicide and death
  • behaving recklessly such as driving carelessly
  • getting things in order such as giving away valued possessions or writing a will
  • showing a marked change in behaviour, attitudes or appearance such as not grooming
  • abusing drugs or alcohol
  • irregular mood swings and behaviours such as constant crying, impulsiveness or self-mutilation …

The most vital support that suicidal people need is a pair of listening ears. They need someone who would take the time to really listen to them without making judgments or offering advices. … We can also refer them to Befrienders Malaysia which offers quality emotional support through trained volunteers. Suicide on rise in Malaysia – Liow

by Mariah Doksil. Posted on September 10, 2012, Monday

KOTA KINABALU: The National Suicide Registry Malaysia statistics show suicide is on the rise in the country, with 1,156 people taking their own lives over a three-year period. The ratio of suicides from 2007 to 2010 was 1.3 for every 100,000 people (the global average is 16 suicides for every 100,000 people), but it could be higher as these figures were based only on post-mortem reports, said Health Minister Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai . Suicidal behaviour in Malaysia has been recognised as a major public health issue, Liow said when officiating at the state-level World Suicide Prevention Day Commemoration 2012 at the State Sports Complex in Likas yesterday. Although the Malaysian suicide ratio may be lower compared to countries like Hong Kong with 15 per 100,000 population and Thailand with 5.6 per 100,000 population, it may be due to under-reporting for various reasons such as the stigma attached to suicide, religious concerns, social attitudes and legal reasons, he said. “In 2011, the National Health Morbidity Survey conducted by the Ministry of Health yielded a prevalence of 1.7 percent for suicidal ideation among adults, 0.9 percent for suicide plans and 0.5 for suicide attempts,” he said. Liow said the study also shows younger people aged 16 to 24 years, females as well as Indians had a higher risk of suicidal behaviour. He said suicidal behaviour can result from a complex interactive biological, social, psychological and environmental factors. Those who experienced stressful life events including family and interpersonal conflicts, relationship breakdowns, financial problems, job loss, loss of loved ones through death, physical illness and cancer are at higher risk of suicide. Other risk factors include people with mental disorders and substance abuse and those with a history of previous suicide attempts. The scenario of suicidal behaviour in the country may change in the future due to rapid urbanization, which also caused socio-economic and cultural changes. The city has come to the ‘kampungs’, meaning the Malaysian community is now exposed to higher levels of stress, which may lead to depression, Liow said.

Abstract

This article highlights methods of ending life in different ethnic groups. This inference is drawn from analysis of data from suicidal cases from the University Malaya Medical Centre mortuary. This study also looked at sex, age, social, and employment factors. Kuala Lumpur has sizeable populations of Muslims, Chinese, Indians and Indonesian, etc. This study is based on 251 cases of suicide that were reported at the University Malaya Medical Centre from 2000 to 2004. Malaysia has a population of 22,662,365 people with 3 major ethnic groups: Malay (58%), Chinese (24%), and Indians (8%) with a minority of “others” (10%), which includes foreigners, Sabahan, and Sarawakian. This research found suicides of 164 male (65%) and 87 female (35%) victims. Their age ranged from 15 to 80 years. The age group from 21 to 30 had the highest total cases of suicide (83 of 251; 33.1%). Among ethnic groups highest rate of suicide was among Chinese with a total of 120 cases (120 of 251; 47.8%). As far as lone method of suicide is concerned, hangings accounted for the highest proportion of cases (108 of 251; 43%). Among ethnic groups, jumping from height was the commonest method used by Chinese (49 of 120; 41%), Malay (9 of 16; 56%), and others (15 of 28; 53.4%); whereas, hanging was the commonest method of committing suicide by Indians (49 of 87); Muslims showed the lowest cases of suicide (18 of 251; 7.2%). In poisoning group Indian was the highest ethnic group who used this method (20 of 37; 54.1%).

Suicide and Undetermined Violent Deaths in Malaysia, 1966-1990: Evidence for the Misclassification of Suicide Statistics

Abstract

Suicide statistics are generally recognised to be unreliable. This study of the reported rates of suicide in West Malaysia between 1966-1990 shows that the mean crude suicide rate between 1966-1974 was 6.1 per 100, 000, but had dropped drastically between 1975-1990 to a mean of 1.6 per 100, 000. Three lines of evidence are presented to show that this reduction in the suicide rate is due to a systematic misclassification of medically certified suicides as deaths due to undetermined violent deaths (which refers to violent deaths not known to be accidentally or deliberately inflicted). Firstly, the large drop in reported suicide rates corresponds closely to an increase in the rate of deaths due to undetermined violent deaths. There is a highly positive negative correlation between the two rates (coefficient of correlation, r =-0.9). Secondly, the misclassification appears to be mainly a problem with the medically certified deaths which follow the ICD classification. The mean ratio of uncertified to certified suicides before 1975 was 0.8, but from 1975 onwards the mean was 3.1. This is in contrast to the corresponding ratio for deaths due to all accidents which has remained fairly constant throughout these years. Thirdly, the race and sex differences for the rates of undetermined violent deaths are identical to those of suicide. Taking the misclassification into account the corrected suicide rate for West Malaysia is estimated to be between 8-13 per 100, 000 since 1982.

Child dies in family suicide bid

PETALING JAYA (Sept 18, 2013): For five days, a couple, facing financial difficulty, kept the death of their five-year-old child in a botched family suicide bid a secret until they were found out this morning after the parents of a classmate at kindergarten visited them. Mabel Siew Mun is believed to have died after inhaling deadly fumes from smouldering charcoal in what is believed to be the second of three suicide attempts by her parents at their house at Taman Sri Manja, off Jalan Kelang Lama which began on Sept 11. Her 50-year-old father, a building contractor who had run into financial difficulty after failing to secure contracts for over a month, his 37-year-old Singaporean wife and seven-year-old son, survived the three attempts to end their lives. It is learnt that the man had, in two earlier attempts, tried to use the same method of committing suicide on his family at their apartment on the second floor of a shophouse at Sri Manja Square in Jalan PJS 3/46. The unidentified foreigner believed to be in his 30’s had earlier held up firemen and police personnel who tried to rescue and coax him out of danger for three hours before his fall. He was initially spotted standing precariously on the roof of the shophouse by passers-by who alerted the police at 8am. A police spokesman said the Fire and Rescue Department arrived the scene within minutes and persuaded the man who threatened to jump to step back into the building. Teenager commits suicide on her birthday

PETALING JAYA: With her birthday cake on the table, and waiting for her father’s return from work last night, an 18-year-old girl told her family who gathered for the occasion that she wanted to buy some sweets.

But instead of going to a shop, she went to a ledge at the 16th floor of her Taman Cahaya flat unit, here and jumped off. Her aunt was the last to see A. Nalini, just after 8pm when she looked out the window and saw her niece sitting on the ledge outside the unit at Jalan PJS 2C/2, Taman Cahaya, here. “Nalini glanced and waved to me as she cast herself off the building, she did not say anything,” said the aunt. … It was learnt that Nalini’s co-workers at McDonald’s had also celebrated her birthday a day earlier. “She did not leave any note or letter, and she had never told me of any problems on love or anything,” Arumugam added, saying the family had no slightest idea why she killed herself. “She looked and acted normal, even on the days leading up to her birthday. There was no indication that anything was wrong,” he said. Police had later sent Nalini’s body to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM), here.

The Malay Mail’s investigative reporter, Haresh Deol, saves one!

This is the message from Dr. Teh =)

To all UTAR students: By now, many of you would have known what happened in the Sg Long Campus. It is shocking for many that a young boy with a future would take the step to end his life tragically. While many of us would have questions as to why this was done, and many of these questions would remain unanswered, it is best that we allow for ourselves and the family this time of grief, reflection and prayers. My advice is that we give our due respect and dignity to the deceased and refrain from speculating on the cause of his death. The University (specifically DSA officials and an academic staff from FAM) has been with the family (i.e. at the hospital, etc) throughout this time of grief. The funeral details will be made known later as the family has not decided on this as of now (5.45 pm, 19 July). Once the details are known, we will inform the SRC of Sg Long. The University conveys its deepest condolences to the family. Meanwhile, for those who may be affected in one way or another by this event, and you wish to talk to a counsellor about this, please go to the DSA office and speak to our counsellors or officers there. You may also approach the relevant staff members of FMHS who have also volunteered to provide counseling to those in need. DSA Counsellors will speak to the relevant students involved (tutorial / lecture group) next week, and has also spoken to the housemates of the deceased to provide any grief management. Thank you for your kind understanding and cooperation in this matter, by not speculating further with regard to this event. — a

Suicides highest among those in their 50s

PEOPLE aged 50 to 59 made up the largest proportion of suicide victims in Singapore last year, new figures show. Last year, 57 men and 38 women in this age group took their lives. There was also a worrying rise in suicides among people in their 60s and older. “Those in their 50s experience significant life changes,” said Gleneagles Hospital psychiatrist Adrian Wang. “They might be retrenched or have their jobs taken over by younger colleagues or they might experience the empty-nest syndrome when children leave home. Marriages might also take a turn for the worse because of these factors.” Multiple stress points could trigger depression and lead to suicide if the person cannot cope, he added. People in their 50s have been among the top three age groups with the most suicides for four of the past five years. Suicide numbers among those aged 40 to 49 have also been significant. Two out of three among all who killed themselves last year were men. Professor Kua Ee Heok, senior consultant psychiatrist at the National University Health System (NUHS) said men who live alone, have money problems and have poor social support are more prone to ending their lives. Dr Alex Su, chief of general psychiatry at the Institute of Mental Health, said male rates have traditionally been higher because when they attempt suicide they use more extreme methods with a higher likelihood of guaranteeing death. As for women, relationship problems are often a cause for depression. Suicides highest among those in their 50s —–

Nafisa Khan commits suicide

Jiah Nafisa Khan Suicide: My Daughter was Very Weak from Within, Says Mother

By : Subscribe to IBTimes’s | June 15, 2013 3:44 PM IST

The mother of late Bollywood actress Jiah Nafisa Khan, who committed suicide on 3 June, said that her daughter was very weak from within due to her troubled relationship with her boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi. Jiah’s mother also said that she still can’t believe that her daughter had taken the extreme step. Jiah Nafisa Khan was found hanging at her apartment on 3 June and her suicide note suggested that she committed suicide due to her complex relationship her boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi. Speaking about Jiah Nafisa Khan, her mother Rabiya Khan told Press Trust of India, “It is heartbreaking… unbelievable… why she did this? When someone is behaal (in bad shape), disturbed mentally and emotionally then they don’t know what they are doing, what step they are taking. She was a fighter, soldier.” Stating that the 25-year-old actress was gravely disturbed, Rabiya added, “She was very spiritual. She used to advice and counsel her sisters. Being elder, she was protective about them. It is surprising to know how kamjor’ (weak) she was from within… we couldn’t believe she did this.” After the family of the actress recovered the six page note, which is believed to be written by Jiah Nafisa Khan before she committed suicide, the police Sooraj was arrested on 11 June on the charges of abetting suicide after the police scrutinised the content of the letter. Rabiya also said that Jiah took the extreme step because her love was not respected and recognised by Sooraj. Suicide by intentional ingestion of pesticides: a continuing tragedy in developing countries

Deliberate self-poisoning has become an increasingly common response to emotional distress in young adults,1 and it is now one of the most frequent reasons for emergency hospital admission.2 In industrialized countries, the drugs that people commonly take in overdose—analgesics, tranquillisers, antidepressants3—are relatively non-toxic. The estimated case fatality for overdose in England, for example, is around 0.5%.4 Most individuals who self-harm do not intend to die. Studies carried out in industrialized countries have found that only 2% go on to commit suicide in the subsequent 12 months.5

In developing countries the situation is quite different.6 The substances most commonly used for self-poisoning are agricultural pesticides.6–,11 Overall case fatality ranges from 10% to 20%.12 For this reason, deaths from pesticide poisoning make a major contribution to patterns of suicide in developing nations, particularly in rural areas.6 In rural China, for example, pesticides account for over 60% of suicides.8 Similarly high proportions of suicides are due to pesticides in rural areas of Sri Lanka (71%),13 Trinidad (68%),14 and Malaysia (>90%).10 There is, however, no evidence that levels of suicidal intent associated with pesticide ingestion in these countries are any higher than those associated with drug overdose in industrialized countries, where the drugs taken in overdose are less toxic.

……

Method availability and suicide

The common use of pesticides for self-harm in part reflects their ease of availability. Whilst their use in agriculture is widespread in industrialized countries, large-scale farming is practised by a small number of landowners, thus reducing the number of people with direct access to pesticides. In contrast, most people living in rural regions of developing countries are involved in agriculture and farm small areas of land. Subsistence farmers keep their own supply of pesticides, commonly within, or close to, the household.23 A recent study in China found that 65% of pesticide suicides used chemicals stored in the home.8

Suicide by intentional ingestion of pesticides: a continuing tragedy in ——– SUICIDE IN AUSTRALIA

1 Suicide is the number one non-health related cause of death in Australia, particularly for males aged 15-54. It accounts for an average of 2300 deaths each year, compared to about 1500 road fatalities, according to the ABS.

Suicide kills more Australians than die in road accidents. In 2008, the most recent figures available, 2191 people took their own lives, while the annual road toll has fallen below 1400. For the past decade suicide numbers have hovered around 2050 a year.

2 However, the national rate of suicide fell from 11.4 (2001-05) to 10.7 (2006-10).This was due to a fall in all other states except in Western Australia.

3

Western Australia (WA) is the only state in the country where the rate of suicide increased from 11.8 deaths per 100,000 (2001-05) to 13.2 (2006-10).

There were 2535 suicides in WA in the 10 years 2001-10.

4 Regional WA recorded far more suicides than Perth during 2006-10, at 18.5 deaths per 100,000 compared to 12.2.

Why? Lifeline national spokesman John Mendel said that the increase could be due to the rise in young men moving to the state to take part in the mining boom.

The latest Census data released last month showed men outnumbered women in WA for the first time.

“Every three in four suicides [in WA] are male and particularly young males,” Mr Mendel said.

“At the moment we’ve got a phenomenon in WA where you’ve got lots of migrants from the Eastern states, particularly young males who work in the mining industry and one of the causal effects [of suicide] is loneliness.

“This at-risk group are putting themselves in a situation where they’re isolating themselves from family and support networks. So it’s quite likely that any problems they’re experiencing that lead to suicide thoughts are likely to be manifested in that environment.”

Intern falls to his death in Taiwan

He is said to have set workplace on fire before fatal fall

KAOHSIUNG: A 28-year-old Malaysian intern at a hospital here allegedly set his workplace on fire and injured a colleague before falling to his death. Police found a note, written in Chinese, from the deceased, Lin Wei Yang – reported to be a seventh year anaesthesiology student at Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan – which said “Reject first aid, agree to donate organs, cremation, thank you.” Sin Chew Daily reported on its online version yesterday that the incident took place two days before Lin would have completed his internship at the university’s Chungho Memorial Hospital. It was said that at around 3.30am yesterday, the hospital’s alarm was triggered by thick smoke in the men’s changing room, located on the second floor of a building. “A worker from the information room, identified only as Wu, who went to check on the smoke, bumped into Lin and was slashed in the neck with a knife.

“Soon after, Lin fell to his death from the sixth floor of the building,” the daily reported. Both men were rushed to the emergency unit where Lin was pronounced dead two hours later. Wu is reported to be in stable condition. Lin Zhi Long, chief secretary of the university, claimed that the Malaysian student had problems in his studies and found it hard to adapt to the new environment since entering the school. “He also had financial difficulties,” claimed Zhi Long, adding that the university had been providing counselling and monetary assistance to the student. Lin had completed his secondary studies at Foon Yew High School in Johor. It is learnt that a day before the incident, Lin had requested to terminate his studies.

—– EMILE DURKHEIM: ALTRUISTIC SUICIDE One of the earliest sociologists to study suicide was Emile Durkheim. He described four types of suicide. Of interest today is altruistic suicide. Altruistic Suicide is suicide committed for the benefit of others. A man throwing himself onto a grenade is giving up his own life for those around him. He dies that they may live. However, this is the type of suicide that occurs when integration is too great, the collective consciousness too strong, and the individual is forced into committing suicide. Integration may not be the direct cause of suicide here, but the social currents that go along with this very high degree of integration can lead to this. According to Durkheim this type of suicide may actually spring from hope, for it depends on the belief in beautiful perspectives beyond this life. During the Second World War, Japanese pilots who flew their aeroplanes into battleships of the enemy would be doing so for the glory of their Emperor and the Empire. To this end, Japanese pilots would fly on their mission against the Americans with enough petrol for only one trip: there. These ‘kamikaze’ pilots killed the enemy and thus, killed themselves. Japanese Kamikaze attack on the USS Essex A Japanese Kamikaze attack on the USS Essex, during the battle of Philippine Sea on the 25th November 1944. http://youtu.be/hziFBOx4yqc …….. SUICIDE ATTACKS ARE AN ALTRUISTIC FORM OF SUICIDE A suicide attack is an attack upon a target, in which an attacker intends to kill others and/or cause great damage, knowing that he or she will either certainly or most likely die in the process. Between 1981 and 2006, 1200 suicide attacks occurred around the world, constituting 4% of all terrorist attacks but 32% (14,599 people) of all terrorism related deaths. 90% of these attacks occurred in Iraq, Israel, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Sri Lanka. Although use of suicide attacks has occurred throughout recent history — particularly with the Japanese kamikaze pilots of World War II — its main notoriety as a specific kind of attack began in the 1980s and involved explosives deliberately carried to the target either on the person or in a civilian vehicle and delivered by surprise. Following the success of a 1983 truck bombing of two barracks buildings in Beirut that killed 300 and helped drive American and French Multinational Force troops from Lebanon, the tactic spread to insurgent groups like the Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka, and Islamist groups such as Hamas. Wikipedia 911: ALTRUISTIC SUCIDE The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11, September 11th, or 9/11)were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by the Islamist terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. areas on September 11, 2001. On that Tuesday morning, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger jets, intending to fly them in suicide attacks into targeted buildings. Two of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. Both towers collapsed within two hours and falling debris, combined with fires that the debris initiated in several surrounding buildings, led to the partial or complete collapse of all the other buildings in the World Trade Center complex, also causing major damage to ten other large structures in the immediate area of the complex. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense), leading to a partial collapse in its western side. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after its passengers tried to overcome the hijackers. ‘Isolation may have affected family’

Alleged suicides could be due to poor grief management, says doctor

From page 1 PETALING JAYA: The suspected suicides of a mother and her three children, who were found burnt to death four days after the head of their family died, could be due to the intense relationship among the family members. Malaysian Psychiatric Association president Dr Abdul Kadir Abu Bakar said that if proven to be suicide, the case could be considered special as the children were adults who could be expected to think for themselves. “Often, a mother who falls into depression after her husband’s death will want to commit suicide, and will persuade or even force young children to follow suit. “Here, it is impossible for the mother to persuade all three children to die together unless they, too, were very close to their deceased father,” he said. The charred bodies of S. Jayalatchumy, 45, her children R. Thilagawati, 23, R. Puvaneswary, 21, and R. Suhan, 17, were found in the kitchen of their rented single-storey house in Taman Bukit Medan, Sungai Siput, early on Tuesday. The shocking discovery came four days after M. Rajan, 48, died at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh on Feb 1 after a prolonged illness.

Dr Abdul Kadir noted that the family’s isolation from their relatives could have also affected their mental condition. “They chose to interact solely among themselves, which would increase the attachment they had as a family to the extent that when Rajan died, his wife and children might have wanted to join him in the afterlife by killing themselves,” he said. It was reported that the family had stopped interacting with relatives and friends and did not attend social functions such as weddings. Universiti Sains Malaysia psychologist and criminologist Dr Geshina Ayu Mat Saat said that the alleged suicides could be due to poor grief management, possibly from social isolation. “Isolation is a factor that either increases or loosens bonds between people. Here, it has strengthened the victims’ bond with the head of the family, so much so they could not handle the fact that he was gone,” she said. ‘It could be due to intense ties’

MALACCA: A man leapt to his death from a condominium here after he claimed that his late wife had asked him to join her in the afterlife. Chan Kok Sing, 42, was found dead at Bukit China here at about 2.30pm yesterday after he had allegedly told his mother that his wife had been calling him to be with her. Chan’s close friend, who wanted to be identified only as Lee, said Chan was feeling depressed after his wife Ng Looi Heng, 34, died in a road accident at Bukit China in October. “Since his wife’s death, Chan has been telling his friends and family members that he had often dreamt about his wife,” he said at the scene of the incident. In a second incident, a bank employee was found dead at 8.45am yesterday after he was believed to have jumped off his office building along Jalan Ong Kim Wee here. Fellow bank workers said Han Wei Kong, 30, had been acting strangely soon after he reported for work. A few minutes later, passers-by saw his body in a pool of blood along the road. A relative, who declined to be identified, denied talk that Han had taken his own life due to a strained relationship with his lover. In IPOH, a 29-year-old man was injured after jumping off the Jalan Sultan Iskandar bridge in an apparent suicide attempt. Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Amat Sapekis Rosman said Ng Thean Wei, from Serdang, Kedah, injured his left ankle and waist in the 9am incident yesterday. “We found him sitting by the riverbank in pain. We did not see him jumping off the 12m-high bridge, but he claimed that he did. “Ng told us that he had jumped after being hurt by two of his friends,” he added. Amat Sapekis said Ng, who is unemployed, refused to give his personal details to the firemen. He was later sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital. Before that, his father had killed himself. Next came a sister, Ursula, and a brother, Leicester. Finally, a grand daughter, Margo, killed herself. Five suicides across four generations! 1 The first was Clarence Hemingway, who died on 6 December 1928. Shot himself with his father’s Smith and Wesson .32 revolver. He was Ernest Hemingway’s father. Clarence Hemingway was born on September 4, 1871. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1893 and later received his medical degree from Rush Medical College. He married Grace Hall on October 1, 1896 and they had six children together. He was a very devoted husband and father. Clarence Hemingway shot himself on December 6, 1928 with his father’s Smith and Wesson .32 revolver. His death greatly affected his son Ernest. Throughout much of his life, Ernest Hemingway harbored a great deal of hatred for his mother. This hatred was mainly fueled from his belief that his mother was responsible for his father’s 1928 suicide. In a 1948 letter to Malcom Cowley, Hemingway wrote: “I hated my mother as soon as I knew the score and loved my father until he embarrassed me with his cowardice.… My mother is an all time all american bitch and she would make a pack mule shoot himself; let alone poor bloody father.” 2 Ernest Hemingway, died July 2, 1961. He shot himself with his favorite shotgun. He unlocked the basement storeroom where his guns were kept, went upstairs to the front entrance foyer of their Ketchum home, and pushed two shells into the twelve-gauge shotgun …put the end of the barrel into his mouth, pulled the trigger and blew out his brains. During his final years, Hemingway’s behavior was similar to his father’s before he himself committed suicide;  his father may have had the genetic disease hemochromatosis, in which the inability to metabolize iron culminates in mental and physical deterioration.  Medical records made available in 1991 confirm that Hemingway’s hemochromatosis had been diagnosed in early 1961.  Added to Hemingway’s physical ailments was the additional problem that he had been a heavy drinker for most of his life. 3 Ursula Hemingway, daughter and 3rd child of Clarence Hemingway, died 30 October, 1966. Overdosed on drugs. Sibling if Ernest Hemingway. Ursula Hemingway was born on April 29, 1902.  She graduated from Carleton College in 1925, became a well-known artist in Honolulu and was responsible for creating the Ernest Hemingway Memorial Award for creative writing at the University of Hawaii.  On October 30, 1966, Ursula Hemingway, suffering from cancer and depression, overdosed on drugs. 4 Leicester Hemingway, died September 1982. Shot himself with a .22 pistol. Sibling of Ernest Hemingway. Leicester Hemingway was born on April 1, 1915. He was the sixth of six children born to Clarence and Grace Hemingway and the only brother of Ernest Hemingway.  After being told by doctors that a severe case of Type II diabetes might cost him both legs, Leicester Hemingway shot himself with a .22 pistol in September of 1982. 4 Margot Hemingway (Margaux), grand daughter of Ernest Hemingway, died 1 July 1996 of an overdose of phenobarbital.

Margot Hemingway was born on February 16, 1955.  Throughout her life, Margot struggled with alcoholism, bulimia, and epilepsy. PROMINENT Hollywood film director Tony Scott, whose signature works included “Top Gun,” jumped to his death from a bridge in San Pedro, California, city officials announced late Sunday. Police and US Coast Guard officials pulled Scott’s body out of the water near the Vincent Thomas Bridge, which is built over Los Angeles Harbor, the coroner’s officer said, adding he had jumped from the structure. Investigators found a suicide note in his car, which was parked on one lane of the bridge linking the city suburb of San Pedro to Terminal Island, the Los Angeles Times reported. Its content has not been revealed. Several witnesses saw Scott, 68, climb over a fence on the bridge and jump into the water, the newspaper reported. Celebrity website tmz.com said authorities used sonar equipment to find Scott’s body in the port’s murky waters. His body was recovered at approximately 4:30 pm (2330 GMT), four hours after he jumped, the report said. The body was turned over to coroner officials. The family has confirmed Scott’s death, but offered no details. ‘Top Gun’ director Tony Scott jumps to his death ____________________________________________________________ The time Blogger couldn’t get away from the Mob. The challenge of reducing suicides

Stanley Koh | July 31, 2012
There are no ready solutions, but policy-makers must address such problems as the break-up of traditional family institutions, the erosion of moral and cultural values and the failure of the education system.

…………. Globally, about one million people are estimated to die each year from suicide. To put it another way: experts have calculated that someone somewhere dies of suicide every 40 seconds. And their projection for the future is even more depressing. They say that by the year 2020, there will be a successful suicide every 20 seconds. Will punishing those who attempt to commit suicide help to reduce the rate? Social workers do not think so; they say it’s more important to address the causes of suicide. So there was quite an audible sigh of relief recently when Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai disclosed that the government was likely to repeal or amend the provision in the penal code that allows for the punishment of those who attempt suicide. Still, many wonder whether Malaysian officialdom would even have considered the possibility of amending or repealing the law if not for the outcry over the highly publicised suicide case of 22-year-old Alviss Kong. And even if the law is finally thrown out, is there anything the government is doing to tackle the root causes of suicide? Of course, the government must take the blame for its slow reaction to public complaints that health authorities have not given enough attention to mental health. However, there seems to be no ready answers to the question of what can be done to reduce suicide deaths.

The method was consuming 2,4,5 T, a weed-killer. Death was both gruesomely painful (the weed-killer burned everything from your lips to your stomach!) and inevitable. A common story at the time went something like this. Two babies born to two different Tamil families in a rubber estate are betrothed (promised in marriage) to one another. The baby girl grows up to be quite a hardworking student, gets through her Form 5 (SPM), and goes to work as a clerk in the town near the rubber estate. Call her Sindhu. The baby boy, Muniandy, runs around with the other boys in the estate, studies little if at all, and drops out of school after primary 6. He joins his father as a tapper, and learns to drink toddy. He comes home drunk like his father. Like father, like son is so appropriate. All this while, Sindhu knows Muniandy. She knows him, and knows that the kind of marriage she is destined for is unavoidable. She is educated and has read widely, including Indian love stories and western love stories. Alas, romance and love will not be hers. HOW COULD SHE MARRY HIM? But there is not escape. She is betrothed. She must marry him! Yet, there is an escape. 2,4,5 T. HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED TODAY! KUALA LUMPUR: Suicide is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the world. Each year some 400,000 people take their own lives and the pattern of these incidences is variably influenced by cultural, religious and social values. In Malaysia, for instance, the Chinese community tops the suicide list and coming at a close second are Indians. According to a research conducted by the Forensic Pathology Unit in Universiti Malaya, incidents of suicides were very prevalent among the Chinese young, with the highest number of cases reported in the 21-30 year age category. Suicide law under review

KUALA LUMPUR (June 14, 2012): The Malaysia Law Reform Committee has begun reviewing Section 309 of the Penal Code which penalises those found guilty of attempting suicide, said Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong. Liew said the committee had been instructed to look into Section 309 about two weeks ago. “We are probably going to invite academic institutions to carry out extensive research,” he said. Under Section 309, those who survive a suicide attempt or parasuicide, face up to one year in jail or a fine, or both, if convicted. “We have to look into the history of Section 309. It is a product of the British colonial era. It was not there without reason. We do sympathise with those who attempt suicide and their plight,” Liew said at the launch of the Legal Technology 2012 Exhibition and Forum. However, he said that some parasuicides may have attempted suicide for reasons that require deterrent action. Suicide law under review ———————————————————————————————————— The Star

Lee Senior stops car at Penang Bridge, triggering suicide bid speculation

It’s all just a misunderstanding. I’ll look after myself as I want to live to a ripe old age. — LEE AH CHAI BUKIT MERTAJAM: The father of national shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei caused a stir when he suddenly stopped his car at the Penang Bridge, leading to speculation that he had intended to commit suicide. However, Lee Ah Chai, 59, denied that he wanted to kill himself, saying he decided to go to the bridge yesterday morning after finding it difficult to sleep. “A patrol car stopped nearby and the policemen wanted to see my MyKad. They asked if I was drunk, which I denied. I offered to undergo a breathalyser test,” he added. Ah Chai, a pensioner, said the policemen then told him he was not supposed to stop at the bridge and took him to the police station. “It’s all just a misunderstanding. I’ll look after myself as I want to live to a ripe old age,” he explained in a telephone conversation with state Youth, Sports and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong. ———

June 10, 2012

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 10 — Police today foiled two attempted suicides by the father of a national athlete, including one at the Penang Bridge. The 59-year-old man is said to have tried to take his own life near the Queensbay shopping mall in Bayan Lepas early today but was foiled by police who coaxed him out of it. Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) police chief ACP Azman Abd Lah said police were notified of a man crying by the sea near the mall at about 4am. “A patrol team was sent there and coaxed him to return home. Our men took about three hours to coax him to return home,” he said when contacted by Bernama. The patrol car then proceeded to tail the man who was driving his own car, he said. “Upon reaching Km2 of the Penang Bridge at about 7.45am, the man stopped the car by the bridge, alighted and tried to jump into the sea,” he said. However, he added, police swung into action and managed to intercept him.
