Tunku Aziz: 1MDB a ‘non issue’ just to prop Mukhriz as PM
The scandal of 1MDB is a “non-issue” twisted by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad in order to elevate his son Mukhriz Mahathir to prime ministership.
Former DAP leader Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim made the claim today at a press conference at Eastin Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
“In hindsight, 1MDB was a non-issue, stirred and twisted by Mahathir to serve his political agenda of bringing down a constitutionally-elected prime minister as part of a larger plan to put his unremarkable son Mukhriz as a candidate for the nation’s highest public office,” he said.
…
1MDB is under investigations in several countries, including the US, Switzerland and Singapore.
…
Tunku Abdul Aziz also urged Mahathir to “come clean” on how his three sons, Mukhriz, Mokhzani and Mirzan, accumulated vast wealth in a short period of time.
“Mahathir must come clean on this and other instances of corruption linked to his name if he is to assume a leadership role in public or political life ever again.”
He also questioned the sudden blossoming of an “unlikely partnership” between DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and Mahathir, who were previously on opposite ends of the political divide.
Lim, he said, used to be one of the most vocal and ardent critics of human rights suppression and corruption during Mahathir’s reign as prime minister.

Mahathir likens Tunku Aziz to a ‘hopping here, there frog’

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has taken a potshot at Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) adviser Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim for lodging a police report against him.
“I will have to go to court now because of Tunku Aziz who was former Transparency International chairperson.
“He was very ‘transparent’. He looks like a frog, hopping here and there,” he quipped.
Although Mahathir did not elaborate, he could have been referring to Tunku Aziz’s previous stint as a DAP member.
The former premier made the remarks when asked on the progress of securing an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to submit the more than one million signatures for the Citizens’ Declaration.
“The rulers may be confined to their palaces,” Mahathir had claimed.

Tunku Aziz lodges police report against Dr M | thestar http://fw.to/i1sFYuB #Malaysia @drsunflower @kuabt @lowelsielow54 @nonvitaltooth
KUALA LUMPUR: Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim has lodged a police report against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for allegedly claiming that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and other Malay rulers had been placed under house arrest.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission advisory board chairman said that the former premier’s claims, which were reported on a few online new portals, were reckless and against the honour and integrity of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Tunku Abdul Aziz, who was accompanied by several supporters, lodged the report around 3pm Monday at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.
“Dr Mahathir claims the house arrests were done to prevent His Majesty and the Rulers from receiving the 1.4 million people’s signatures he claims to have collected.
“By effectively accusing the Government of placing His Majesty under house arrest, Dr Mahathir has gone too far,” he told reporters after lodging the report.
He said Dr Mahathir has created confusion and suspicion by his irresponsible actions and has put the peace and security of the country at risk.
He urged the police to investigate and take action on the matter.

Scratch a little and the racial supremacist emerges
YOURSAY ‘It is a pity that someone as old as this should say something as stupid as this.’
Chinese flexing muscles at Malays, says Tunku Aziz
SRMan: Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim, when you said that “it is obvious that this undeniably Chinese funded and organised demonstration had chosen carefully the dates to flex their muscles and to show their complete and utter disdain for an event of great emotional and spiritual significance for millions of Malays,” you are implying as if this rally was pre-planned by the Chinese to fulfill your said agendas.
But then you are wrong because nobody, including the police, knew beforehand that the Chinese would outnumber other races in Bersih 4. That being the case, how would the Chinese have planned to flex their muscles at anyone?
By the way, where were you when the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers were harassed at the height of the special task force investigations on the RM2.6 billion scandal?
Didn’t you put your so-called 30 years of anti-corruption experience into action?
CQ Muar: Tunku Aziz has gone bonkers for uttering such highly inflammatory statements.
After his departure from DAP where he was disillusioned over some differences, he immediately spewed ill about the party.
And now, out of “boredom” and having being ignored and left out in the cold for too long, he begins to let his imaginations run wild with such absurd and racist remarks.
Police reports must be made against him for his attempt to cause racial unrest among the different races. He ought to be put behind bars; better still, confined in an asylum.
Negarawan: “But this provocative and racially insensitive act is arrogant by any reckoning and something which I will long remember as a deliberate challenge to Malay sentiments and sensitivities,” said Tunku Aziz in a commentary published by New Straits Times.
Tunku Aziz obviously has a hidden agenda to racialise the Bersih gathering as he has decidedly brushed aside the participation of a large percentage of Malays, Malay leaders, and ex-PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself. Many of the key organising committee members of Bersih are Malays.
This blatant, shameful and untruthful commentary to racialise Bersih could only be published by a racist Umno publication. Tunku Aziz is playing to the script of Umno in his racially distorted version of history, aimed at belittling the contributions of non-Malays to the country.
Tunku Aziz has lost all his respect and honour by revealing that he is a racial supremacist and bigot.
Sontotsia: Tunku Aziz, you have got it all wrong. When the Malays gathered to attack innocent Chinese people in Low Yat over theft of a mobile phone, that was Malays flexing their muscles. The Chinese didn’t retaliate and many even went to the extent of forgiving the perpetrators.
If you had attended Bersih 4 rally, you would have known that the crowd was made up of Malay Malaysians, Chinese Malaysians, Indian Malaysians, Portuguese Malaysians, Malaysians of mixed parentage, and East Malaysians.
Pardon me for pointing out the obvious, but we Malaysians came together over the weekend to express how we felt about the thievery and arrogance of those who are holding power in our beloved country.
Malaysians are not stupid and it will do you well not to take us to be fools. You are speaking up for the kleptocrats who are laying siege to this nation of ours. You desire racial warfare to bring emergency rule so your kind can hold on to power.
Myviews: I used to have a high regard for you and when you joined DAP, I even fantasise that one day, you may lead the party. But as you go into your twilight years, you have shown your true colours.
You are nothing but a downright racist. Or, if you’re not, then you are going senile and I hope it is the latter for your own sake so that you’ll not be cursed when you leave for the hereafter.
You yourself admitted you took a long time to join DAP and you did so because it is the only party that has been consistent in its policies since inception.
As for your views on Bersih 4, why must you link it to race when the whole world knows that it is corruption at its highest level that Malaysians are fighting against? What better time to take to the streets if not on Merdeka Day?

The mutation of Tunku Aziz (Part 3)
Martin Jalleh completes his trilogy on the ‘transformation’ of Tunku Abdul Aziz by taking a closer look at the man’s opinion of Prime Minister Najib Razak back then.
……
It was a complete turnaround by Tunku Aziz of his opinion on Najib’s person, position, performance and (transformation) programmes which he (Tunku Aziz) had consistently held over the past few years.

All institutions of governance in our country namely the police, civil service and judiciary genuflect to the will of this oligarchy which is Umno.
Newly resigned DAP vice-chief Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim, being the intelligent man he is, should have known that you must not give succour to a corrupt oligarchy which has been responsible for the systemic rot in our country.
Sadly however, this is exactly what he did, either knowingly or unknowingly.
Tunku must have known that Stadium Merdeka was offered as a venue for Bersih 2.0 but at the last minute the permit was rescinded.
This year Bersih 3.0 was not going to fall for the same trap. No doubt they also wanted to show that the rakyat meant business and saw no reason why they could not assemble peacefully at Dataran Merdeka (Freedom Square).

The mutation of Tunku Aziz — Martin Jalleh
MAY 20 — Below are excerpts of an article written by Tunku Aziz. It appeared in The Malaysian Insider (of which he was then a columnist) on August 6, 2009, and the following day on Lim Kit Siang’s blog.

Demonstrations: A fundamental right of citizens
By Tunku Aziz
……
Perhaps De Klerk’s most inspiring statement in defence of democratic principles is “…..no vision of the future can justify any government to ignore the basic human rights of the human beings involved. No cause is so great that we should allow it to dilute our sense of justice and humanity.” [Emphasis mine (TA)]
On that note, as our legal friends would say, I rest my case. Now over to our self-proclaimed reformist prime minister. (Please take note of what he called Najib Razak then!)

Dissecting Tunku Aziz — Koon Yew Yin
…….
It is important to note that Tunku Aziz has always been a conservative and a pro-establishment figure right from his early days.
…….
Given his background and career, it is not surprising that Tunku Aziz has now returned to the Barisan Nasional fold. His reputation for standing up for principles and for consistency has now been exposed as undeserved.
Some readers have asked whether Tunku Aziz was in fact a government mole. I do not think so. In my mind, what happened was the rebuke by Lim Guan Eng over his initial Bersih comments. It was a public dressing down by the DAP chief, which no person, especially one with a strong sense of his standing in society, could be expected to stomach.
This was compounded by the DAP decision not to renew his senatorship…..

COMMENT The sad fact is that Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim’s role in the DAP was merely window-dressing to project the image of this so-called ‘chauvinistic Chinese party’ as a multiracial forward-thinking party.
His dignified pose symbolically completed the racial holy trinity for a political party so long demonised as ‘racist troublemakers’ bent on destroying the fragile social contract of Malaysia.
He presented the image of the Malay as urbane and benign so unlike the confrontational fear-mongering ruffians who have no problem displaying their butts to make a point only they seem capable of understanding, which seems to be the norm these days. A Malay willing to work with other like-minded Malaysians towards a better tomorrow.
Exactly which Malay demographic Tunku Aziz was supposed to represent or attract into the DAP fold was never determined.
Even amongst urban Malays, he seemed out of touch with their reality. Rabble-rousing was never in the Tunku’s repertoire, which is exactly what most Malays (urban or rural) who gravitate to Pakatan Rakyat seem to relate to.
Unlike say someone like former National Union of Journalists president Hata Wahari who experienced the regime’s wrath in an up close and personal manner, the Tunku’s appointment and presence seemed like uncomfortable reminder of a bygone political era, steeped in gentlemanly tradition (which was anything but) whose sole duty was to comfort the non-Malays in DAP that theirs was a party truly reflective of the diverse nature of Malaysia.

Tunku Aziz – Gentleman, Hee Yit Foong or Hasan Ali, it won’t stop DAP or Pakatan
Written by Moaz Nair, Malaysia Chronicle
AP does not stand alone in Opposition politics in the country. It is part and parcel of a Malay-dominated Pakatan Rakyat where PAS and PKR are also members. DAP works with PAS and PKR to ensure that the two-party system in the country become a reality.
Tunku Aziz Abdul Ibrahim joined the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in August 2008, citing shared “values and ideals” with the party. His many anti-corruption initiatives made him a popular figure locally and internationally. He was appointed national vice-chairman of DAP and in July 2009 he was made a senator in the Dewan Negara, representing the state of Penang.

Tunku Aziz’s exit from DAP — Sakmongkol AK47
It offends UMNO that Malays choose to join DAP. Why does the action of Malays joining another legitimate political party which is not UMNO, induce that feeling? It springs from arrogance and political xenophobia. UMNO is the chauvinist party that sees people who reject it ( for whatever reasons they choose) as a betrayal to UMNO. That is what offends UMNO actually. They can’t understand why people can be `disloyal’ to UMNO. UMNO expects Malays to be loyal to it- but what principles and values does it offer that can sustain the much desired loyalty?
UMNO arrogantly believes that an UMNO Malay is the only Malay. So it offends UMNO to see Malays abandon UMNO as though, the Malay has converted into another race. UMNO is fast adopting the Hassan Aqidah Ali mentality.
Next it offends UMNO not being able to see an exodus of other Malays from DAP. Suddenly UMNO has credited Tunku Aziz with some extraordinary attributes that must without fail, encourage other Malays to leave DAP. Alas, Tunku Abdul Aziz is alone. UMNO’s hope that Tunku Aziz’s action can serve as the catalyst prompting other Malays in DAP to do likewise crumbles. Indeed, Tunku Aziz’s action reinforces the determination of Malays who joined DAP to stay put despite his U-turn.

The transparently transformed Tunku Aziz — Jaleel Hameed
MAY 18 — In the past week, Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim has repudiated the party that he said he had observed for two decades, joined for almost four years, and is now championing the Najib administration.
Kudos, sir. You’ve been transformed and in quite a transparent manner, if I might say so.
You, sir, had championed transparency, spoke out against graft, and now you speak well of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
The government that used the state apparatus such as the police and City Hall to shut down Kuala Lumpur during Bersih 2.0, where people hiding in a hospital were smoked out with teargas.
The same government whose police allegedly assaulted people during Bersih 3.0 — the sit-in that apparently had no traction.
The government that turned a blind eye to electoral fraud, encourages right wing politics, completely controls all of the country’s institutions, in which there is still widespread and growing corruption.
