A public inquiry into unnecessary use of force by police during the Bersih 3.0 rally is to be held by the Malaysia Human Rights Commission (Suhakam).

Upon serious consideration, it decided to hold a public inquiry into the matter, Suhakam said in a statement today.

It announced that the panel would be chaired by law professor and commission vice-chairperson Khaw Lake Tee (right), along with commissioners Mahmood Zuhdi Abdul Majid and Detta Samen as the other members.

This is the same panel that conducted the Bersih 2.0 public inquiry.

The horror endured by 19 victims of police brutality during the Bersih 3.0 rally has shocked the electoral watchdog’s chairperson.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga has heard countless accounts of police brutality taking place during the April 28 rally but she was still “deeply shocked” by those of 19 victims who shared their stories with the media this morning.

“I feel terrible,” Ambiga told FMT after the media conference at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH).

“Every time I hear a single one of these stories it gives me a deep shock. I’ve heard that one may even go blind and that is very shocking,” she said.

The narratives of the 19 victims were similar in that they were confronted by groups of unidentified policemen who beat them for either being a rally participant, recording the on-goings or attempting to help another victim.

A Bersih 3.0 participant who accused police of beating him up is now refusing to provide further statements to investigate his allegations of brutality.

PETALING JAYA: Police have urged the Bersih 3.0 participant and alleged “police torture” victim Mohd Safuan Mamat to come forward so that a statement can be recorded to investigate his case.

“My men have called him to come forward so that we can take further statements from him on the latest allegation, but he is not cooperating.

“He said that we should just talk to his lawyer. If you don’t help us, how are we to help you?” Kuala Lumpur CID chief Ku Chin Wah told FMT yesterday.

It is understood that Safuan will not give any police statements upon the advice of his lawyers, who would only cooperate if an independent panel is formed. They also plan to bring his case up to Suhakam.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 — One hundred alleged victims of police brutality from Bersih 3.0 will come forward this Saturday to tell their stories, Bersih 2.0 announced today, adding that the group may include those in the police wanted list.

The polls watchdog told a press conference here that it was inappropriate for the police to launch a dragnet on those in their list for failing to come forward, saying not many were aware they had been named.

“You should not be hunting them down this way. You should issue a letter to them, asking them to come.

“And these over 100 in the list… where is this list? Was it in the media?” Bersih 2.0 steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah said.
