Gedong ‘crocodile hunters’ catch giant crocodile

KUCHING: A giant crocodile measuring about 14-feet-long and eight-feet-in-diameter was caught in Gedong at around 6.30am this morning.

Gedong crocodile hunter, Gobek Julaihi, when contacted, told The Borneo Post that the villagers were living in fear since the sighting of three crocodiles in the nearby river recently.

“We started fishing for them two days ago and managed to catch a big one early this morning,” Gobek explained.

This was the second crocodile caught by Gobek and his partner Sujai Yassin, 70, who are known in Gedong as ‘crocodile hunters’.

The first crocodile, which was suspected of being responsible for the death of a villager in Gedong, near Serian was hooked on Dec 30, last year.

The captured reptile, measuring over 13 feet, is believed to be the smaller of two crocodiles which attacked and killed fisherman Nazib Abang on Oct 24 this year at Sungai Gedong.

His body was recovered a few days later with injuries indicating he was a victim of a crocodile attack.

Although the bigger reptile was finally caught today, Gobek said they will to continue to hunt because there are still many of the reptiles ‘playing’ in the village waters now.

“They are playing in the river, right in the middle of our village causing great concern among the villagers,” he said.

On Nov 12, Matthew Riggins called his girlfriend to tell her that he was going to “commit burglaries” in Brevard County.

Sadly, this was to be the last time that she or anyone else would hear from him.

Police officers were called to investigate two suspicious men that night, and Riggins was one of them.

Riggins decided to hide near the waters of Barefoot Bay Lake to avoid the police officer who were chasing him.

Unfortunately, he did not realise that a 3m alligator was at the same spot as him.

The ferocious predator ripped Riggins apart so badly that it took 10 days for investigators to find any trace of him.

Rounding a corner of Yellow Water in Kakadu National Park on Friday morning, a cruise boat was confronted with a sight the tour guides had never seen before, let alone the passengers.

The easily recognisable Maxi — a five-metre saltie considered the billabong’s Godfather — was preparing his breakfast, in the form of a two-metre crocodile.

For Yellow Water Cruises’ trainee guide Nikki Davies, it was a confronting reminder of the “supreme power of nature”.

In the Australian outback, a crowd of shocked onlookers caught sight of a brutal fight to the death between two of Oz’s mightiest and most terrifying reptiles. A fearsome crocodile was locked in fierce conflict with a gigantic snake.

Author Tiffany Corlis captured the event on camera. She was having breakfast by Lake Moondara in Queensland when a group of canoeists noticed the skirmish. When they got close enough they saw the creatures struggling against each other in what would prove to be a fatal confrontation.

The crocodile was desperately trying to keep its head above the water as what is believed to be a python wrapped itself around the croc’s body and started to constrict. After five hours, the snake had won, having successfully squeezed the life from its defiant but defeated opponent.

Mystery Crocodile in Crete Killed by Cold Snap

Embedded image permalink

A man-eating crocodile that became an attraction on the Greek island of Crete last year after its mysterious appearance in a lake has died, probably of cold, an official said Monday.

“The crocodile was found dead on Sunday,” regional water management official Vangelis Mamangakis told AFP.

“It will be taken to the natural history museum of Heraklion for tests,” he added.

Nickhamed Sifis — Cretan for Joseph — the Nile crocodile had assumed nationwide notoriety after being discovered last summer at an artificial lake.

The fearsome two-metre reptile was last seen in mid-February, Mamangakis said, adding that an initial veterinary inspection had pointed to death from cold exposure.

Crete was hit with a cold snap in February, with temperatures in some areas falling close to freezing.

Crowds had flocked to the lake last summer to catch a glimpse of the animal, whose appeal only increased when it repeatedly eluded attempts to trap it.

Tourist snap: crocodile on the loose in Crete sparks visitor rush to island

Reports of ‘abandoned’ reptile send Greek officials into panicked search but social media chatter and inflatable croc sales soar.

The surprise appearance of a 6ft long crocodile on Crete is sending ripples through Greece and the social media world beyond.

The reptile, believed to have been abandoned, became an overnight sensation after being spotted last week basking in the sun near an artificial lake south of the island’s resort town of Rethymnon.

On Wednesday, local media reported that a second crocodile had been seen, fuelling fears that Crete had become a breeding ground for reptiles more usually associated with tropical climes. With a Facebook page now dedicated to the animal, named Sifis by admirers, and tourists rushing to the area, souvenir shops have begun selling inflatable crocodiles.

But Rethymnon’s anxious mayor, Giorgos Marinakis, has ordered the reservoir fenced off. Herpetologists have warned of dangerous times ahead if the solo crocodile or pair cannot live in their natural environment. Emergency services, including police patrols, have been stepped up.

400kg crocodile found dead at Kranji Reservoir

SINGAPORE – A 400kg crocodile, probably one of the largest to have roamed wild here in decades, has been found dead on the Kranji Reservoir grounds.

Get the full story from The Straits Times.

National water agency PUB, which oversees the area, said that it received feedback from its crocodile handler on April 18 that a dead crocodile was spotted at the Kranji Reservoir area.

“Upon receiving the report, PUB officers immediately went on site and found a dead crocodile. Arrangements were then made for the crocodile handler to remove it from the reservoir and the dead crocodile was disposed of at a nearby farm,” said Mr Tan Nguan Sen, Director of Catchment & Waterways at PUB.

There is a history of crocodile sightings at the Kranji Reservoir area, PUB said in a media statement.

Twelve crocodiles have been caught alive since 1989, with the last one caught in 2006. There were no crocodile sightings reported in Kranji in 2012 and 2013.

PUB said it received a report that a crocodile was spotted in Jan 2014 at the Kranji Intake Bund, which is located at a remote area of the reservoir and is out-of-bounds to the public. There are warning signs to alert the public on the potential presence of crocodiles there.

He has watched countless episodes, and was distressed when Australian wildlife expert, television personality, conservationist and series host Steve Irwin died in September 2006.

Little did Azlan know that some of the knowledge he had consumed would come handy later in his life.

Fast forward to Friday and the 29-year-old military police volunteer was called into action.

He and two friends managed to capture a rogue crocodile that had been terrorising Kampung Muara Tuang villagers since last year.

This reptile, measuring some 3m (nine feet), had made a drainage system in the village its domain.

On Friday around 7pm, one of Azlan’s friends, who wanted gave his name as only Halim, was walking near the area on his way to have a massage.

He chanced upon the crocodile and “I quickly called Azlan, who happened to be nearby”.

Azlan and two other friends, Mohamad Haizie, 33, and Awang Nur Salam, 26, rushed over, armed with a fishing net, rope and sticks.

Using what he had learnt from the Crocodile Hunter, Azlan managed to rope the reptile with the help of Haizie and Awang.

5-metre long crocodile found dead in Setiu

SETIU: A five-metre long crocodile was found dead after it was trapped in a fishing net in Sungai Bari near Kampung Che Selamah here this afternoon.

The crocodile, weighing around 500kg is the biggest to be found in Setiu so far.
State Department of Wildlife and National Parks director Yusoff Shariff said the crocodile was found by a fisherman at 4pm today.
He said the discovery of the crocodile, estimated to be about 30-years-old, shocked the villagers in Kampung Che Selamah as they had never seen the creature in the river before.
“We conducted a post mortem and found a wild boar in the crocodile’s stomach. We believe that the crocodile gorged to death on the wild boar before it got stuck in the fishing net,” he said.

Anuar Sulaiman, 39, and his brother Endoi Sulaiman, 42, were having a field day catching the abundant prawns found at Plunga Hilir, about 20km from Sungai Seblak, a tributary of croc-infested Batang Lupar.

Friday’s drama began around 9pm as Anuar was just about to start their boat’s outboard engine.

Endoi was in the midst of reeling in the fishing net when a crocodile powered its way out of the water and snapped Anuar’s left leg.

Clinging to the outboard engine for dear life, Anuar kicked relentlessly at his assailant with his other leg.

With Endoi holding onto him and pulling, an excruciatingly painful tug-of-war ensued between Endoi and the reptile.

The crocodile finally released Anuar’s leg in what both men later said was after five minutes of struggle.

Anuar, speaking from his bed at Saratok Hospital, said he could not tell how big the crocodile was.

Sungai Seblak is infested with the reptiles and is location for several attacks.

So far there has been no close encounter or attack by the reptiles but residents said the risk of attacks was still there and the authorities had been urged to look into the matter quickly.

“At first I did not believe that there were crocodiles in that river until I encountered one pretty close,” said a resident, who wished to be known only as Dendy.

Dendy, 44, said he worried for those who liked to go leisure fishing and young children playing near the river.

The sightings were said to be close to the city centre, thus the risk was even greater, he added.

Croc that took Australian boy was fed by locals

Posted on 3 December 2012 – 05:47pm

SYDNEY (Dec 3, 2012): A search was suspended Monday for a nine-year-old boy taken by a four metre (13 feet) crocodile in northern Australia, which police said was being fed by the local community.

The child had swimming with a group of people at an Aboriginal community near Port Bradshaw, 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of the town of Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory, on Saturday when he was grabbed.

Adults threw spears at the animal but it responded by dragging the boy into deeper water and no sign has been seen of him since.
………………

Northern Territory police said that in the latest incident the crocodile had lived side by side with the Nhulunbuy community for many years.

“The croc was believed to be very old and the community had interacted with it in the past,” a police spokesman told AFP.

“From time to time they threw it food, or left fish carcasses out. Not a wise move.

“Our local officer in Nhulunbuy said the croc had been known to the community for 20 years,” the spokesman added.

Police said late Monday their search, which involved local rangers and volunteers, had been called off.

Crocodile eats boy, 12, as he swims with friends in Australia’s second fatal attack within two weeks

  • Adults within the group tried to save the boy by spearing the animal

A 12-year-old boy was grabbed by a crocodile which swam off with the child in its mouth today in the second fatal attack within two weeks in Australia’s tropical Northern Territory.

Although teams of police and rangers will continue the hunt for the youngster on Sunday they privately fear that the boy is well beyond help.

Less than two weeks ago a seven-year-old girl was killed by a crocodile in the Northern Territory, with what are believed to be her remains being found in a reptile that was later shot in the area where she went missing.

‘Inital reports suggest adults within the group tried to save the boy by spearing the animal, but the crocodile dragged the child out to deeper water,’ said police Superintendent Michael White.
………………

Saltwater crocodiles, which can grow up to 25ft and weigh more than a ton, are plentiful in the Northern Territory and signs have been erected near waterways warning visitors to stay away from the water and river banks.

Crocodiles are protected in the Northern Territory and their numbers have increased steadily, resulting in a number of attacks on people.

August 16, 2012

TAWAU, Aug 16 — A man who went missing while catching prawns in Sungai Udin in Dumpas near here yesterday is feared to have been eaten by a crocodile.

The victim, Jailani Inderasaya, 54, from Kampung Jagung, Merotai Besar, was said to have gone to the river to fish for prawns with his son, Azwan,16, when the incident happened at 4.30pm. According to Azwan, while his father was casting the net by the river bank, suddenly a 15-foot long crocodile emerged and bit into his father’s shoulder before dragging him into the river.

He said when his father did not surface, he rushed home to inform his family members as to what had happened and that they and the village folk mounted a search but to no avail.

Rising fear of crocodiles

It’s the hot season, a favourite time for crocodiles to prey on unsuspecting victims along the rivers of Sarawak.

HOUSEWIFE Mili Nur was bathing in Sarawak’s Sungai Niah when her right leg was bitten by a crocodile. While the reptile tried to pull her into the water, she kicked, struggled and managed to free herself.

— ZULAZHAR SHEBLEE / THE STAR One-eyed killer: A villager examining the partly blind crocodile which is believed to have killed Siah while she was bathing in the river near her longhouse in Sungai Anak.Mili, 25, was lucky to survive the misadventure which occurred early this year near her longhouse Rumah Nur, some 120km from Miri.

A similar case happened in Sibuti as Lumeit Entabang, 64, was almost dragged to a watery death by a crocodile. She managed to break free from the reptile’s jaws, but not without some injuries.

The plucky grandmother punched the crocodile in one eye before it let her go. She was injured on the hand and thigh.

While the two women lived to tell the tale of their lucky escape from the jaws of the crocodiles, others have not been so fortunate.

In the last two months alone, two fatal attacks have been reported. Siah Munsong, 42, was killed after a crocodile attack in Sungai Anak near Roban, Saratok. She was accompanying her husband Embol Asum, 42, to a nearby jungle to gather rotan.

After the day’s work, Siah decided to take a bath in the river together with three cousins. As she was frolicking in the water, a crocodile suddenly pulled her into the murky water.

She screamed while Embol and the other relatives tried to hit the crocodile with their bare hands, hoping it would release Siah’s leg, but to no avail.

Later that night, Siah’s body was discovered trapped in a fishing net nearby.

The crocodile was believed to have been caught and killed on July 2 after the villagers sought help from a shaman near Sungai Nyiar, which is about 3km from the victim’s longhouse near Sungai Anak.

Barely three weeks later, another victim lost his life to a crocodile at the Saribas River near Beladin.

On July 5, Derahman Chali, 55, was eating a packed breakfast at around 8.30am with his friend Mohd Nor Bujang, 51, by the river bank near where they collect sago logs. After the meal, Derahman decided to wash his hands in the river and that was when he was attacked.

Hearing the water splashes, Nor turned and saw a crocodile dragging Derahman into the water. Derahman’s remains were found by local fishermen two days later near Kampung Medang, Spaoh, some 20km from the spot where he was attacked.

Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa has reportedly urged the Government to issue licences for crocodile hunting to protect residents living along rivers in the state.

Last year, it was reported that rivers in Engkilili could have the biggest population of the reptiles in the state and their presence posed a serious threat to the people living by these waterways.

Seeking ways to keep croc numbers in check

IN recent years, there have been numerous reports of crocodile attacks on unsuspecting villagers in the rivers of Sarawak.

According to the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) Protected Areas and Biodiversity Conservation senior manager Oswald Braken Tisen, the crocodile population in the state has been on the increase over the last 20 years.

He describes it as a recovery stage for the reptile, scientifically known as Crocodileodylus Porosus. It is also known as the estuarine or Indo-Pacific crocodile or saltwater crocodile.

This species is one of the largest and most ferocious of all other known crocodile species alive today.

…………

He adds that with the increasing population of crocodile, there is bound to be human-crocodile conflicts.

A few suggestions have been brought forward to curb the numbers, including relocating the crocodiles to an uninhabited river in a nature reserve.

But he says this would be pointless as crocodiles have a “homing” habit and they would eventually find their way back to where they came from, as a study in Australia has proven.

Another proposal is culling the reptiles.

One-eyed croc

12-year-old gets his revenge, stomping on beast and poking its eye in anger

Villagers surrounding the 3.6m crocodile, which is believed to be the killer of housewife, Siah Munsong, on June 20. Siah was attacked and killed by a crocodile while bathing in the river near her longhouse, Sungai Anak, in Roban, Saratok. ROBAN: Yusri Indoi burst out in anger, screaming as authorities dragged a dead crocodile through the town here.

The 12-year-old poured scorn on the reptile that was believed to have killed his grandmother, Siah Munsong, on June 20.

“Kamu bunuh nenek aku (You killed my grandmother),” he shrieked as he stomped on the dead crocodile yesterday.

Behind him, his friends cheered as he vented his anger.

When approached, Yusri told The Star that he had vowed revenge against “every living crocodile” on the day his grandmother was seen dragged into a watery death, as tears ran down his face.

Refusing to say anymore, he pushed his way back to the reptile and kicked the reptile and poked its only eye.

Villagers and the authorities believed they might have caught the killer croc, judging from an earlier description — 3.6m long and 1m wide and probably with one eye as the other was lost in a fight between the reptile and the husband of the deceased on the day of the incident.

“This was the description given by the victim’s husband who tried to get the crocodile off his wife at the time of the attack,” said Hasmi George, who was part of the hunting operation. He said they caught the crocodile at Sungai Nyiar which was about 3km from the victim’s longhouse, Sungai Anak.

Killer croc, 2 ‘lieutenants’ killed

SARATOK: A  MALE crocodile, believed to have killed and devoured villagers since 2007, was killed on Sunday  by a bomoh.

Indet Senabong, 49, said the crocodile, nicknamed Bujang Seblak, had killed Siah Munsong, the 42-year-old wife of a longhouse chief, when she was bathing at Sungai Nyiar on June 19.

It snared on one of Indet’s baits, laid out along the river at Lubok Nanga, about 3km from where Siah was killed.

Indet was sure that the 4m long reptile was the same killer crocodile because the bait he laid — the meat of a white dog — “would only be taken by a crocodile that had done something wrong (eaten human)”.

The man-eater was discovered when Indet went to inspect his lines at 8am yesterday.

The crocodile, which had a gunshot wound on its mouth, was brought to Sungai Anak as proof to sceptics that Bujang Seblak had been killed before it was taken to Roban.

Husband fails to wrestle wife out of croc’s mouth

SARATOK: A ferocious crocodile just refused to let go of its victim despite all the heroic acts of the rescuers.

The reptile, said to be about six metres long, took all the poundings of several men of a longhouse here, but its jaws were locked and between them was Siah Munsong, 42, who within minutes was dragged into the murky depth of Sungai Anak in Roban near here.

Croc caught in Australia after eating nine dogs

Sydney:  A 4.4-metre crocodile that had eaten up to nine pet dogs has been hauled out of a river in Australia’s north, a report said today.

The rogue croc was trapped at Daly River community, some 225 kilometres south of Darwin, where it was terrorising residents and animals, the Northern Territory News said. Community police officer Mark Casey told the newspaper his office had nine reports of dogs being taken by a crocodile, believed to be the animal caught, in a month. “Crocs are an ever-present danger but you don’t see
them,” he said.

CROCODILES

A crocodile is any species belonging to the family Crocodylidae (sometimes classified instead as the subfamily Crocodylinae). The term can also be used more loosely to include all extant members of the order Crocodilia: i.e. the true crocodiles, the alligators and caimans (family Alligatoridae) and the gharials (family Gavialidae), as well as the Crocodylomorpha which includes prehistoric crocodile relatives and ancestors.

Malaysia’s wildlife experts tag Borneo saltwater crocodile

Wildlife researchers in Malaysia are to track a saltwater crocodile by satellite, they said, in a bid to find out why nearly 40 people have been attacked on Borneo island over a decade.

The wild saltwater crocodile was captured earlier this month on the Kinabatangan river in Sabah state and had a tag strapped around its neck before being released, said Benoit Goossens, head of the Danau Girang Field Centre.

The tag is already returning information to the scientists.

Although getting up-close and personal with a crocodile isn’t anyone’s idea of a good time, the recently opened Crocosaurus Cove theme park, in Darwin, Australia has introduced this situation as a breathtaking attraction.

For about $80 anyone can be lowered in Choppa’s underwater lair, in a reinforced acrylic cage for a 15 minute heart-thumping experience. Choppa is an aggressive saltwater crocodile rescued from a crocodile farm where he got into conflicts with other crocodiles. If Crocosaurus Cove hadn’t taken him in he would have been shot.
