A short video clip posted by a couple complaining about their treatment at a hotel in Taiping has led to a police investigation for defamation and abuse of network facilities.
Taiping district police chief Osman Mamat said investigations were initiated after a complaint was lodged on Saturday, according to Astro Awani.
Osman did not reveal if the couple were the suspects in the probe.
The probe is conducted under Section 500 of the Penal Code, a violation that can result in a prison sentence of up to two years, a fine of an unspecified amount or both.
Police are also invoking Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which on conviction carries a fine of up to RM50,000, a jail term of not more than one year or both.
Osman advised the public to use social media platforms wisely and exercise civility.
The widely shared video clip depicted the couple complaining about their stay at a hotel and their ensuing verbal altercation with the alleged owner of the premises.
