A small group of protesters, under the Taranaki Truth and Freedom Rally banner, have gathered on land near New Plymouth’s Coastal Walkway, warning they will stay put until “further notice”.

On Friday, Ngāti Te Whiti hapū and Te Kotahitanga o Te Ātiawa said they understood an occupation at Puke Ariki landing was planned for Saturday, a move police also knew about.

By 10am on Saturday, Puke Ariki landing, which is wāhi tapu for the iwi and hapū, was clear of any signs of protest.

However, a small group of about 10 people was seen setting up a protest site, which included signs and flags on a section of land near the Wind Wand. No tents had been erected as yet.

The land is understood to be owned by Ngāti Te Whiti Whenua Topu Trust and leased to the New Plymouth District Council.

On a sign near Saturday’s protest, it said the occupation would be in place from 10am, until further notice.

On Thursday, a series of concrete bollards were installed along the Ariki St side of the grassed landing, along with a set of steel posts, which effectively stop vehicles being driven onto the site, but not pedestrian access.

This was done as a precautionary measure, New Plymouth District Council group manager community and customer services Teresa Turner.

Covid-19: High Court quashes ‘unlawful’ vaccine mandate for police and defence force staff | RNZ News

Excerpts:

While the judge did not accept some of the applicants’ arguments, he agreed the mandate infringed on section 11 and section 15 of the Act.

“The order limits the right to be free to refuse medical treatment recognised by the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act (including because of its limitation on people’s right to remain employed), and it limits the right to manifest religious beliefs for those who decline to be vaccinated because the vaccine has been tested on cells derived from a human foetus which is contrary to their religious beliefs,” Justice Cooke said.

He pointed out the court’s decision did not affect any other vaccine mandates nor internal vaccination policies of the police or Defence Force.
.

“I should make it clear what this case is not about. The order being set aside in the present case was not implemented for the purposes of limiting the spread of Covid-19. Health advice was that such a further mandate was not needed for this purpose. Neither should the court’s conclusion be understood to question the effectiveness and importance of vaccination. The evidence shows that vaccination significantly improves the prospects of avoiding serious illness and death, even with the Omicron variant. It confirms the importance of a booster dose given the waning effect of the first two doses of the vaccine.

“But the order made in the present case is nevertheless unlawful and is set aside.”

The applicants were awarded costs.

Violent messages among misinformation at Parliament protest

By Kristin Hall, 1News Reporter

2:18pmSource: 1News

Nicky Giddens arrived at Molesworth Street just outside Parliament last Tuesday with a black horse float in tow. The float features an image of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern behind bars, a QAnon sign, and a bold banner that reads ‘JABCINDA YOUR TAXI IS HERE’.

Over the past 10 days, protesters have added their own additions, including messages of support, phone numbers, and an image of a syringe going through the prime minister’s head.

Giddens says the sign isn’t to be taken seriously.

“That’s not threatening, that’s a joke, come on… we’ve got better jokes to come and you’re gonna see them all very soon,” she said.

She agrees that some elements of the protest have gone too far.

“Individuals are speaking their mind because they’re angry. The rest of us are all here for peace, love and unity.”

But Giddens has bought into the idea that there will be serious consequences for those involved in the vaccine rollout in New Zealand and overseas.

“Gosh the Nuremburg 2.0 trials have started, why is no one reporting on that? You know, that’s the crimes against humanity and treason.”

Giddens is not alone in believing the Covid-19 vaccine breaks the Nuremberg code. It’s an idea that can be spotted on signage around Parliament and is rife in online chats about the protest on Telegram, Facebook, Twitter and Zello.

The Nuremberg code was a response to medical experimentation Nazi doctors performed in concentration camps during WWII, without consent. The trials for the doctors involved concluded more than 70 years ago.

Disinformation researcher at Te Pūnaha Matatini Sanjana Hattotuwa says the idea Nuremberg trials are currently happening or will happen are a carefully constructed conspiracy.

“There is no evidence these trials are taking place in any manner, shape or form anywhere in the country or anywhere in the world.

“Conspiratorialists are conducting their own trials and mock trials and putting it up on social media to promote and project a frame that these things are taking place, none of which is under any kind of jurisprudence or legal framework that is accepted.”

On Monday, crowds gathered on Parliament lawns as a list of names of academic and politicians and were called out in a mock trial.

“Innocent or guilty?” a man with the microphone asked after he read out the name of a prominent academic.

“Guilty!” the crowd responded.

Hattotuwa says as chilling as this behaviour is, online discourse about the protest is significantly worse, and is growing in popularity.

“The recent data coming out of the protest, particularly after February 6th, is disturbing on a number of fronts. There is greater volume in terms of the tenor, tone and thrust of mis and disinformation, it’s getting extremely violent, vulgar, abusive, vicious and venomous but it’s also being produced at a greater pace.”
.

Counterspin media director, far-right extremist and protest attendee Kelvyn Alp has repeatedly called for violence online and on the ground at Parliament.

When Act leader David Seymour met with protesters on Wednesday, Alps’ response, broadcast on Counterspin, was that Seymour was lucky not to be hanged.

“You’re lucky they haven’t strung you up from the nearest bloody lamppost, you clown,” Alps said.

“Everyone knows Seymour’s just a gimp. All he’s done is he’s read the room, realised s*** these people are serious, there’s a lot more of them throughout New Zealand,” Alp said.

White supremacist Philip Arps arrested after alleged ‘public execution’ comment

Jennifer Eder14:00, Feb 14 2022

A white supremacist jailed for sharing footage of the Christchurch terror attack has been arrested in Picton, hours after allegedly declaring he was off to a “public execution”.

Christchurch man Philip Neville Arps, 47, was travelling up the country when he was arrested in Picton on Friday afternoon and charged with threatening to kill and using offensive language.

A charge sheet said Arps was at a BP petrol station in Linwood, Christchurch earlier that day, saying there was going to be a “public execution”. “I’ve been promising it, I’ll see you in seven to 10 years,” he was quoted as saying on the charge sheet.

He was also accused of threatening to kill members of the public and police.

Arps, who used to own a white supremacy-themed insulation company, was jailed for 21 months in 2019 after he sent a video of the Christchurch terror attack to 30 people, and asked a friend to modify it by adding cross-hairs and a “kill count”.

Arps was held in police custody over the weekend and appeared at the Blenheim District Court on Monday by audiovisual link from the Blenheim police station.

Arps was also facing older charges of breaching release conditions, and two counts of using offensive language, relating to alleged offending in Christchurch in 2020 and 2021.

Arps pleaded not guilty to the charge of threatening to kill and elected trial by jury.

Police opposed Arps being released on bail, but bail was granted after submissions were made by Arps’ lawyer Anselm Williams. Only limited reporting was allowed at bail hearings, meaning further details cannot be published.

Judge Tony Zohrab issued bail conditions that banned Arps from entering the greater Wellington region, and the BP petrol station on Woodham Rd in Linwood.

He remanded Arps to a case review hearing in Christchurch on April 22.

‘It shakes you’: Wellington bus driver spat on and yelled at by protesters

Ellen O’Dwyer21:02, Feb 14 2022

Matthew Myers was trying to finish his number 22 bus run when the loud bellow of a man forced him to brake.

A protester yelling at Myers to stop driving through Lambton Quay, one of the main bus routes in the city.

Then, unexpectedly through his driver’s window, Myers was spat at.

“This woman came up from a direction I didn’t see, up to the driver’s window and pffffft – in my face.”

“I’m a bus driver, I’m not the enemy. It just didn’t make any sense,” Myers said.

Another woman behind the spitter gave Myer’s a “maniacal” glare, he said.

The incident happened last Friday, and Myers, who drives routes all over the capital, thinks the Parliamentary protest, entering its eighth day on Tuesday, has been “tiring, stressful, and unnecessary” for the city’s drivers.

Cars, vans and campervans have choked the northern end of Lambton Quay outside parliament, as well at Molesworth St, Bunny St and Victoria University’s law school car park.

As of Monday night, many were still blocking streets, despite the police’s appeals to protesters to move vehicles to Sky Stadium.

On Saturday, following incidents of abuse to drivers and passengers, Metlink decided to re-route buses, stopping most further up Lambton Quay, at Farmers – or opposite Capital Gateway, on Thorndon Quay.

Myers said while minor, the incident was disgusting, leaving him rattled.

Jacinda Ardern’s message to New Zealand after anti-mandate protest descends on Parliament

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has sent a message to vaccinated New Zealanders after anti-mandate protesters descended on Parliament: that these people aren’t representative of the majority of Kiwis and “this too will pass”.

Hundreds of people from all over New Zealand gathered on Tuesday to show their opposition to the Government’s COVID-19 rules and restrictions, as well as the vaccine mandates introduced last year.

Their protest meant roads in Wellington CBD were jammed and some buses had to detour around Parliament.

Some protesters’ vans were emblazoned with their message, some of which said “We choose freedom” and “Stop the divide, drop the pass”.

Asked about the protest at her post-Cabinet press conference on Tuesday, Ardern used the opportunity to instead talk about the number of people who had been vaccinated so far.

“I know today at 1pm, 31,000 people had gone out and been vaccinated, and so I think it would be wrong to, in any way, characterise what we’ve seen outside as a representation of the majority,” she said.

“The majority of New Zealanders have done everything they can to keep one another safe.”

Ardern also thanked the “vast majority” of Kiwis who’ve made sacrifices throughout the pandemic and have been vaccinated, and she added that “this [the protests] too will pass”.

Just over 3.9 million New Zealanders aged 16 and over are fully vaccinated, with 1.6 million of these having received their booster dose too.

Just over 200,000 children aged 5 to 11 years old are partially vaccinated too. This age group isn’t yet eligible for their second dose.

The majority of district health boards have fully vaccinated more than 90 percent of its eligible residents too, with just Northland, Tairāwhiti, and Whanganui left to hit this target.
