KOTA KINABALU, June 10 — Sabah politician and pageant co-organiser Phillip Among has pleaded not guilty to five charges of molestation here today.
Of the five, four of the charges involve the same person, an Unduk Ngadau pageant contestant, in four separate incidents on the same day, while another involved a staff member.
The first charge held that Among, 52, had allegedly molested a staff member at 11pm in the lobby of Jesselton Capsule Inn in Asia City, on April 17.
The other charges claimed Among had on May 19 committed the same offence on the Unduk Ngadau contestant at 2pm in the stairwell of a studio in Asia City; at 3.30pm at a tourism company office belonging to Among; at 9.45pm in a car after dinner; and at 10pm at an office in Metrotown.
Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun set the pre-trial case management dates on July 14, 21 and 22.
She also reduced the bail from the original RM20,000 for each charge, to RM8,000 per charge after Among’s lawyers Marcel Jude Joseph and Abdul Fikry Jaafar Abdullah argued that he was not a flight risk and that he had been subjected to social media crucifixion.
He is also restricted from any contact with the victims or the victims’ families and must surrender his passport and check in at the police station once a month.
Sabah politician in sex harassment probe files suit against beauty pageant contestant
Phillip Among also initiates legal action against Rela guard on duty at Kaamatan Harvest Festival

KOTA KINABALU – Troubled Sabah politician Phillip Among has initiated legal action against two individuals over allegations of sexual harassment in police reports they have lodged.
Among, who has been suspended as Sabah Star Putatan parliamentary coordinator, named a Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant contestant and a People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) personnel in his legal bid.
“I have instructed my lawyers to file court proceedings against the two individuals, together with certain publishers. My lawyers, Marcel Jude & Co, will also be issuing further suits against those who published malicious stories on the internet, such as (on) WhatsApp.
“At no time did I molest or sexually harass the Unduk Ngadau participant. The story and police reports are a fabrication intended to hurt and damage me and my family, and my personal and public reputation,” Among said in a statement today.
He has also scheduled a press conference at 11.30am today at his office here.
In his defence, he said he has done so much for the community where he has been assigned to serve.
“As a result, I have received much support from the rakyat but, at the same time, there have been many people who are jealous and willing to resort to gutter politics to harm and destroy me.
“The report on sexual molestation is utterly untrue. The timing of the report is clearly an afterthought made by (the accuser).
“Why make the false report more than two days later? I am very disappointed and sad that she has resorted to this kind of unlawful action.”
On the Rela guard, Among believed it is part of a political conspiracy against him, saying he had gone to the festival venue for work but was “unlawfully stopped”.
“He committed trespass to and again almost two days later, he went and filed a false police report just because I argued with him to let me through.
“He totally twisted and turned the story as if he was the victim but, in actual fact, this particular person was going to ruin a statewide function by his unlawful action,” said Among.

KOTA KINABALU, June 2 — The secretary-general of Sabah’s Party Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) Datuk Guandee Kohoi today said that a parliamentary coordinator of the Putatan division has been suspended after two police reports were lodged against him for sexual assault.
Guandee said the coordinator had allegedly sexually assaulted a beauty pageant contestant and also abused a security staff.
“STAR Sabah is a constitutional party and all matters must be resolved in accordance with the provisions of the law in the party. In line with this, the party has suspended Philip Among as the Parliamentary Coordinator of P.173 Putatan effective today.
“Further action, either suspending his membership or expelling him from the STAR Sabah party will be taken after the disciplinary board convenes,” he said.
Earlier today, police confirmed receiving reports against Among, who was part of the organising committee in the just-concluded Unduk Ngadau pageant, or Harvest Festival queen.
A contestant had alleged that the accused had led her to his car and office and groped her around her thighs, back, neck and hands among others.
She made the report on May 21, two days after the alleged incident, and 10 days before the pageant ended on May 31.
