BUTTERWORTH: Bagan MCA division has lodged a report with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) over a superimposed picture with slanderous remarks on MCA-linked institutions of higher learning.

Its chairman Dr Tan Chuan Hong said his face had been “replaced” with a picture of a Sikh in a turban.

He said the photo also showed the man holding a placard in Chinese that reads: “Objecting to MCA for raising student fees. Rahman has earned MCA hundreds of millions in profit each year.”

Dr Tan said in the original picture, he was holding a placard with Chinese characters that urged the Penang government to resolve flood woes in the state.

“Several party members told me after seeing the picture on Facebook on Sunday.

“The perpetrator superimposed a picture of me with that of a Sikh.

“It also sends out false information that Rahman has been raking in hundreds of millions of ringgit in profit for MCA,” he said after accompanying Taman Orkid MCA branch chairman Tan Ming Huan in lodging a report at the MCMC office here yesterday.

It is believed that “Rahman” in the placard refers to Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC).

Dr Tan said the act was also disrespectful to the Sikh community and might create racial tension, adding that a police report had also been lodged over the matter.

PETALING JAYA: Students from two private universities funded by MCA have urged the party to relinquish ownership of the schools to allow them to operate without political interference following complaints by the party leadership of smaller allocations for the year ahead.

Chester Wong, from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar), said education should be free from political interference regardless of the role played by MCA in the establishment of Utar and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC).

“I believe MCA’s original purpose for forming Utar and TAR UC, previously known as KTAR, was to help students further their studies. At the same time, the universities also produced talents in the workforce.

“But as time went by, this became a political tool to gain popularity and trust ahead of general elections,” the English literature student told FMT.

TAR UC was known as KTAR or Tunku Abdul Rahman College before receiving university college status in 2012.

As a Utar student, Wong said, he was grateful to former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik for setting up the universities. However, he said MCA’s role in Utar should have ended there.

“MCA should allow Utar’s upper management to handle funding issues and other decision-making processes because Utar does not consist of MCA members, but people who voted for both sides of the political divide,” he added.
.

Another Utar student, Sarah Yeoh, said MCA should consider renouncing its ownership of both universities if it was truly concerned about education.

“They should look at the bigger picture and ensure that students can pursue quality education without being involved in the murkiness of politics.

“Allowing the management to run the schools will also enable them to practise autonomy in carrying out certain policies, without having to look over their shoulder,” she added.

However, former student Ananga Ratnakumar questioned whether Utar and TAC UC would be able to keep their tuition fees at affordable levels without MCA.

“With MCA, tuition fees are so much cheaper. What if MCA is detached from Utar and TAC UC? We may not get the same level of fees that we do now,” she said.

GEORGE TOWN: Action will be taken against MCA if it ‘punishes’ students by increasing tuition fees following the government’s decision to provide only RM5.5 million development fund for both Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) in the 2019 Budget.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said he could accept the fact that MCA leaders were making nasty and personal attacks against him over the matter. He however warned the party not to take it out on the students.

“MCA is using the students…punishing them to hit back at me. All I can say is that if you want to hit back at me, hit back as I am used to to it.

“I can accept that but don’t take it out on the students. If you take it out on the students, we will take action against MCA,” he told newsmen here today.

He was met at the George Town Literary Festival where he was honoured for founding the festival and lending continuous support of the festival in the past eight years. Lim was awarded the patron of George Town Literary Festival. Also present was Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Lim, in his 2019 Budget speech, had announced a RM5.5 million development fund for UTAR and TAR UC. The amount was a RM24.5 million cut from RM30 million previously.

KUALA LUMPUR: Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng (pic) insists that MCA break off ties with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TarUC) before the government provides more allocation for the two institutions.

“I would advise that next year, we will consider (more allocations) but we want to be sure that there is a clear separation between education and politics.

“Both UTAR and TarUC must not be owned by MCA,” said Lim in his winding-up speech for his ministry on Budget 2019.

He was replying to a question by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong on why the government had slashed funds for the two institutions.

Dr Wee pointed out that the government had merely provided a RM5.5mil development fund for UTAR and TarUC but not any matching grant.

Lim said there could be different forms of allocations for both the institutions if they were not owned by MCA, reiterating that politics and education needed to be separated.
.

Later on Facebook, Dr Wee wrote that he felt very disappointed by Lim’s reply, adding that it was obvious the Pakatan Harapan government was punishing MCA and it did not consider TarUC students were mostly from Chinese middle and low-income families.

“I would like to stress that MCA, as the founder of TarUC, has never taken a sen out of the institution.”

Lim, said Dr Wee, also disregarded the fact that TarUC was a non-profit educational institution that had produced over 200,000 alumni.

Spinning: UTAR budget cut is punishment because it was established by the MCA.
Truth: Allocation for UTAR was cut by RM24.5 million while that of  University of Malaya was cut by RM40 million. UTAR has cash reserves of RM580 million.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 14 — Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching today denied that the funding cut for MCA-backed Kolej Universiti Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Utar) was due to political reasons.

She was speaking to reporters after officiating the Awards Ceremony for Dengue Patrol 2018 here today.

“We do not deny that the development allocation for Utar has been cut by RM24.5 million in Budget 2019 as we have to optimise our limited resources

“This constitutes only 4 per cent of Utar’s cash reserve of RM580 million and UTAR has the largest cash reserve among public universities. It’s unnecessary for Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong to allege that the cut was due to political reasons,” said Teo.

She further added that University of Malaya had its development allocation slashed by RM40 million.

Yesterday, MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said that the budget cut was due to a “vendetta” practised by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government towards MCA.
.

Wee also said that the PH government was “punishing” Utar because it was established by MCA.
