Cops: Man who slapped woman for no tudung is ‘mentally ill’
The man who allegedly attacked a woman in Seberang Perai for not wearing a headscarf is believed to be mentally ill, according to the police.
“Based on preliminary investigations, the police have found that the man is in his 30s and hails from Ipoh, Perak, and has had mental problems for 15 years,” Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Nik Ros Azhan Hamid was quoted as saying in Utusan Malaysia.
He said the incident took place on Jan 6, when the suspect approached the victim and her sister who were waiting for a bus at Taman Perwira, Bukit Tengah, at about noon.
The suspect appeared unkempt at the time, he said, and asked the victim where she was going before becoming enraged while saying that he resents seeing women without headscarves.
He said the victim was unhurt in the ensuing scuffle, and lodged a report on the advice of the police.

Woman assaulted for not wearing headscarf lodges report
A WOMAN who was assaulted by a man for not wearing a headscarf in Penang earlier this month has lodged a police report at 12.25pm today.
The victim, a 24-year-old factory Indonesian worker, lodged the report in central Seberang Prai over the incident that occurred between noon and 12.30pm on January 6 at a bus stop in Taman Perwira in Bukit Tengah.
District police chief assistant commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid told The Malaysian Insight through WhatsApp that, according to the victim, “the suspect did not slap her but shoved her head during the encounter”.
In her report, the woman, who lives in Bukit Mertajam, said she was waiting for the bus with her sister and friends when an unknown man walked towards them and asked where they were going.
“The suspect was described by the victim as unkempt and appeared to be of unsound mind,” Nik Ros Azhan said.
“The victim told him they were going to town, and he began a tirade of scolding her. He said he hated seeing women without headscarves.
“She ignored him and he shoved her head. Nothing else happened as her sister managed to prevent the incident from escalating. The women left the scene after that.”

Cops non-action over video of man slapping woman raises eyebrows
Published: Modified:
Bukit Gelugor parliamentarian Ramkarpal Singh said in various cases, the police themselves have formally lodged their own reports so that investigations can commence.
“For example, if you see somebody being murdered on the street, nobody saw it and nobody lodges a report, it is absurd to say the murder will not be investigated,” Ramkarpal told reporters outside the Northeast police headquarters in Jalan Pattani, Penang.
“Usually the police themselves will formally lodge a report. Not doing so, in this case, raises questions and eyebrows as to why such basic requirement was not done,” added the lawyer.
