KUALA LUMPUR: The “Datuk Seri” who was charged with three counts of causing grievous hurt to two Rela volunteers is being sought by police for involvement in an armed attack at a nightclub along Old Klang Road on May 3.

City police chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim said police believe that jealousy over a woman was the motive behind the attack at the nightclub.

On the night of May 3, a group of men armed with sticks went to the outlet, and damaged the outlet’s property worth RM200,000.

No one was harmed during the attack.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ampang magistrate’s court today, acquitted and discharged a ‘Datuk Seri’ of his remaining two charges for assaulting People Volunteer Corps (Rela) personnel in 2017.

The charges against 30 year-old businessman Datuk Seri Liow Soon Hee were dropped after defence lawyer Datuk Seri Rajpal Singh informed magistrate Mohamad Firdaus Sadina Ali that the victims – Melvin Lee Weng Poh, 28, and Leong Jun Jie, 22, – agreed to a settlement in the form of a compound payment of RM2,000 each under Section 260 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

“We wish to save the court’s precious time” said Rajpal.

No objection was raised by the deputy public prosecutor Nur Intan Syakieraah Zakaria, after which Datuk Rajpal conveyed in court his client’s remorsefulness.

The victims were then asked by the magistrate if they were forced to accept the compound, and if they understood that if the compounds were transacted the case would be concluded.

Both victims agreed to the compound and said they were not forced into accepting it.

Shortly after, Liow handed them the money while still standing in the dock.

PUTRAJAYA: The People’s Volunteer Corp (Rela) Department has urged Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct an investigation into its member Melvin Cheong Mun Khai for withdrawing his police report against a man with a “Datuk Seri” title.

Rela Operation Division director Mohamad Razib Buhaini said this was to ensure there was no element of bribery involving the member.

“It has created doubt in the case and we urge the MACC to look into the matter and address it as soon as possible.

“Our department is taking this matter seriously as it involves our integrity,” he told reporters after lodging the report at the MACC headquarters here today.

On Sept 7, Ampang magistrate’s court had discharged not amounting to acquittal the Datuk Seri on two charges of injuring and assaulting an on-duty Rela member three years ago.

Magistrate Mohamad Firdaus Sadina Ali made the decision after deputy public prosecutor Norhashimah Hashim informed the court that one of the three victims in the case had withdrawn his police report against Liow Soon Hee.

Norhashimah said the victim, Melvin Cheong Mun Khai, 22, withdrew his report after acceptingLiow’s apology.

KUALA LUMPUR: Businessman Liow Soon Hee, 30, who was slapped with four charges of assaulting and obstructing three Rela members in October last year, was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on two of the charges by the Ampang Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

Magistrate Mohamad Firdaus Sadina Ali made the decision after deputy public prosecutor Norhashimah Hashim informed the court that one of the three victims in the case had withdrawn his police report against Liow, who claims to have a “Datuk Seri” title.

Norhashimah said the victim, Melvin Cheong Mun Khai, 22, withdrew his report after accepting Liow’s apology.

As such, Liow’s lawyer, Datuk Rajpal Singh, applied to the court to grant a discharge not amounting to an acquittal to his client on all four charges involving the three victims on the grounds that Cheong was the complainant in all the charges.

However, Norhashimah objected, saying that the police report was just a substantive condition for initiating investigations and that there were two other victims to be taken into consideration.

The magistrate then allowed the lawyer’s application to grant a discharge not amounting to an acquittal to Liow on the two charges involving Cheong, but ordered for the charge of assaulting the two other victims to proceed to full trial.

AMPANG: The businessman with a “Datuk Seri” title who made the news for allegedly assaulting three Rela personnel last year now wants to compensate the officers.

Lawyer Rajpal Singh, representing Liow Soon Hee, informed the Magistrate’s Court here that he would write a letter of representation to Rela director-general Zulkifli Abidin this week to discuss possible compensation to the three officers.

“There is a provision under the Criminal Procedure Code for an accused facing charges on assault to be compounded,” he said.

Liow’s earlier bid to get the Attorney-General’s Chambers to drop the three charges of assault and one charge of obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duty was unsuccessful.

Magistrate Mohamad Firdaus Sadina Ali fixed Aug 14 for the outcome of the representation letter to be made known, after lawyer Michael Wong, who is representing Rela and the officers, told the court he had to seek instructions from the three officers and Zulkifli.

Liow previously apologised to Rela and the officers for his action, but they refused to accept his apology, saying they wanted the law to take its course.
