KUALA LUMPUR: A fire at a popular mall here, which set off alarms and required the building to be evacuated here on Saturday, was brought under control within 20 minutes of authorities being alerted to it.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they received a call at around 7.10pm and managed to bring the fire under control at 7.30pm on Saturday.

He said the fire broke out at a convenience store located on the lower ground floor and its cause is still being investigated.

He added that no injuries were reported in the incident.

A man was seen earlier inside an ambulance wearing a breathing mask but the Department did not comment on his condition.

The scene of the fire was also cordoned off from the public as fire investigators determined the cause of the fire.

Eyewitnesses said they saw sparks coming from a fuse box, and this was followed by thick smoke that engulfed the floor.

Telecommunications sales executive Siti Aslina Basaruddin, 25, noticed thick smoke when she was on her way back to her workstation after visiting the washroom.

She said some shoppers were panicking as they made their way out of the building, while others tried to record the incident with their mobile phones.

Shoppers were seen making their way back into the mall at around 8.15pm.
