PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Baru Bian says academician Kamarul Zaman Yusoff is just trying to create ill-will between Muslims and Christians after the controversial lecturer’s attack on him over a church event in Sarawak.

Earlier today, it was reported that Kamarul – who previously accused Selangor speaker Hannah Yeoh of spreading Christianity through her biography – trained his guns on Sarawak PKR chairman Baru for saying the “All Borneo Revival Convocation 2017” was not political.

He also said the contents of Baru’s book titled “Long Awakening” showed he mixed his religiosity with politics, and questioned whether Baru’s stand on the event was reflective of the PKR central leadership’s stand.

Recently, a similar gathering in Melaka named “Jerusalem Jubilee” was cancelled by the organisers following complaints that it was connected to Zionism.

But Baru dismissed Kamarul’s claims and reiterated that there was nothing political about the event which had been happening for years.

“We don’t talk about politics, we don’t ask people to rebel against the government and we definitely don’t try to convert anyone,” he told FMT, adding the event was for non-Muslims only.

Baru said he believed the claims made against the event was due to the coming general election (GE14) and that Kamarul shouldn’t try to stoke religious flames.

He added that his stand on the matter had nothing do with the PKR’s central leadership as the issue had nothing to do with politics.

“If Kamarul wants to know, all we do at the All Borneo Revival Convocation is remind Christians on what the bible teaches us, about being good and responsible members of society, we remind them to be transparent and not corrupt.

“We also pray for all our leaders, from our elected representatives to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. What’s wrong with that?”

Baru said if the event or its organisers went against the law, the authorities could easily take action against them.

Lecturer lodges report, accuses Yeoh of proselytisation

Universiti Utara Malaysia lecturer Kamarul Zaman Yusuf has today lodged a police report against Selangor speaker Hannah Yeoh for allegedly driving a “Christian agenda”.

In his report lodged at the Changlun police station, the political science lecturer said Yeoh did so through her book “Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey by Hannah Yeoh” published on January 2015.

“I was shocked to find that this book contained parables and excerpts from the Bible. I believe this book is an attempt to persuade, influence or incite non-Christians including Muslims to embrace Christianity or become inclined towards Christianity,” he said in his police report.

His said this breaches Section 4(1)(a) of Selangor’s Non-Islamic Religions (Control of Propagation Amongst Muslims) Enactment 1998 which bars proselytisation to Muslims.

According to the Enactment, a person commits an offence if he persuades, influences or incites a Muslim to “be inclined” or “become a follower or a member” of non-Islamic religion or to “forsake or disfavour” Islam.

Kamarul Zaman said Yeoh might have also breached Section 298(A)(1) of the Penal Code for causing disharmony on religious grounds.

However, lawyer Syahredzan Johan said Kamarul Zaman’s logic is flawed and his police report malicious.

“The person who lodged the police report against Hannah Yeoh over what she wrote in that book has ill intentions to cause religious discontent,” he said on Twitter.

“What is wrong with drawing strength from one’s faith to be in politics? Or is only PAS members allowed to do that?” he asked.
