.
KOTA KINABALU: A 27-year-old man who held a woman hostage at knifepoint for two hours had broken into a house hoping to steal enough money to return to his family in Sandakan.
The father of two told police that he had wanted to steal some money at Taman Istimewah here before heading home.
“We believe he was on drugs and was not very stable at the time of the incident,” Kota Kinabalu deputy police chief Supt George Abd Rakman said, adding that checks showed that the suspect had no previous records.
Supt George said the suspect came to Kota Kinabalu about two or three months ago following some family problems.
“He did not have a steady job and sometimes worked as a dish washer at coffeeshops,” he said.
Supt George said police would record a statement from the 25-year-old victim after she recovers from the trauma.
