Arrested Turkish man met with Najib, says report
PETALING JAYA: Turgay Karaman, one of three Turkish citizens arrested in Malaysia since May 2, met with Prime Minister Najib Razak in Kuala Lumpur prior to the latter’s official trip to Turkey in February 2011, The Guardian reported.
Showing photographs of the meeting, the report stated that Karaman, who was secretary-general of the Malaysian-Turkish Dialogue Society at the time, had interviewed Najib.
The photos and details of the meeting are posted on the society’s Facebook page.
Karaman, who is the principal of Time International School in Ipoh, Perak, was arrested in KL on May 2. The police also arrested his countryman Ihsan Aslan on the same day.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar tweeted the next day that Karaman and Aslan were arrested in connection with activities that threatened national security, under Section 130 of the Penal Code.
Karaman’s wife Ayse Gul Karaman and Aslan’s wife Ainnurul Aisyah Yunos Ali Maricar said the police never informed them of the arrests, even when reports were lodged after they initially thought the two men were abducted.
They said they only found out that their husbands were arrested from media reports of Khalid’s tweets.
On the same day, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the home minister, said Karaman and Aslan were arrested for alleged links to the Islamic State (IS) terror group.
Another Turkish man, Ismet Ozcelik, who holds a refugee card issued by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), was detained on May 4. Ozcelik, a visiting university professor, was first arrested by Malaysiaan authorities last December after Turkish authorities said his passport was cancelled.
After almost a month in prison, Ozcelik was freed with the UNHCR stepping in to issue him accreditation.

Wives of arrested Turkish men puzzled over detention

For Ayse Gul Karaman, her husband T Karaman is the “gentlest” human being, who would not even hurt an insect, let alone another human.
Thus, his arrest by the police, purportedly for being involved in activities that threaten national security, boggles the mind of the 37-year-old Turkish housewife.
“We have been here in Malaysia for almost 15 years, we are not involved in such activities. My husband is the gentlest human being and would not even hurt an insect.
“We call Malaysia not our second home, but our first. Even the remains of our six unborn children (which Ayse had miscarried) are buried here,” she said, while holding back tears.
She was met on the sidelines of the hearing of Ismet Ozcelik, at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court.
Ismet, a Turkish university director, was arrested by immigration officers on Dec 13 last year, despite having a valid social visit pass. He was then charged with four others, with obstructing a public officer.
Lawyer Muhammad Faizal Faiz Mohd Hasani also questioned the manner Karaman was taken by the authorities, as he went to meet Ismet’s son Suheyl at a law firm in Damansara, yesterday evening.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating the alleged abduction of a Turkish man by unknown individuals at a carpark in Damansara Heights Tuesday, a day before he was to appear as a witness in a case at the magistrate’s court.
Turgay Karaman, who is believed to be the principal of an international school in Ipoh, was supposed to testify in a trial set for May 3 and 4.
Karaman was supposed to meet his friend, Suheyl Ozcelik, at their lawyer’s office in Damansara Heights at 4.30pm but did not turn up.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police are studying the CCTV footage and trying to get in touch with the victim’s wife.
“We need to gather all the facts first.
“If indeed he was kidnapped, the family must refrain from spreading information that can jeopardise the investigation, ” he said.

Turkish witness allegedly abducted ahead of court appearance
.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 — A Turkish man heading an international school in Ipoh was allegedly abducted just before he was due to testify as a witness in a two-day criminal trial starting today.
Suheyl Ozcelik, a fellow Turkish citizen teaching physics at the same Time International School, lodged a police report late last night of the alleged abduction of Turgay Karaman.
Ozcelik said he and his friends had discovered the afternoon abduction after viewing close circuit television (CCTV) footage of the office building where Turgay was to have met with lawyers.
“We were shocked to witness from the CCTV recordings that five unknown men had abducted Mr Turgay and forced him to enter one of their cars, Nissan Almera Car Registration No: WQE 8216. The other car is a Proton Gen-2 Car Registration No: BFD 6198;
“The CCTV Recordings clearly showed the faces of these five unknown men who blocked Mr Turgay’s face from the camera,” Ozcelik said in the police report lodged at the Damansara police station and sighted by Malay Mail Online.

According to Ozcelik’s police report, the 43-year-old Turgay was scheduled to have attended a witness briefing at 4.30pm yesterday for a criminal case at the lawyers’ office at Wisma E&C at Damansara Heights.
After arriving at 4.25pm with two other friends at the office building’s basement parking, Ozcelik said they thought Turgay had already arrived as they saw his car in the parking lot.
He said however that he tried contacting Turgay at 4.35pm when the meeting with lawyers started, but could not reach Turgay either through phone calls or WhatsApp messages as the latter’s mobile phone was switched off.
He said he kept trying to call Turgay from 6.40pm to 7.00pm after the meeting ended but was unsuccessful, adding that he then “panicked” as two of his Turkish friends were abducted last October 13 and deported to Turkey the following day.
He then immediately asked to view the security footage of the basement carpark and its exit gate, which led to the discovery of the abduction.

Wife of abducted international school principal makes a video, appeals to Malaysian govt to help find her husband who ‘has not committed any crime’.
…
“I am calling on the Malaysian government to help as he is a gentleman and never hurt anyone,” she said.

PETALING JAYA: Two Turkish citizens were allegedly abducted in Kuala Lumpur on May 2, a Turkish blog reported today.
According to Turkey Minute, a police report was filed over one of the cases while the details are being compiled for the other case to be also officially reported to the police.
In the report sighted by FMT, Turgay Karaman, who is a principal with an international school in Ipoh, was said to have been abducted in the car park of Wisma E&C in Damansara Heights yesterday afternoon.
The report was filed by a friend of the victim who was supposed to meet him for a meeting with their lawyers pertaining to a court case that was up for mention today.
Later, the victim’s wife, Ayse Karaman made a video, appealing for help from the Malaysian government.
.
In the video, Ayse claims five Malaysian men had abducted her husband, based on the CCTV footage at the car park, and that she has not received any information about him since the abduction. His car was also left behind in the car park.
“I am calling on the Malaysian government to help as he is a gentleman and never hurt anyone,” she said, adding that the couple have been staying in Malaysia legally over the past 13 years and that her husband has not been involved in any crime.
In the report, Turgay’s friend wrote: “I request that the police investigate the kidnapping and notify the Immigration Department to stop any attempt to remove Mr. Turgay from Malaysia. I am very afraid for my safety and scared that my Turkish friends who are kidnapped and sent to Turkey will be tortured and killed.”
In the other abduction case, Turkish Minute reported friends of Turkish businessman Ihsan Aslan as saying that he was abducted in KL. However, the exact location of his abduction had not been stated.
His friends were said to be compiling the details of his abduction in order to file a police report.
Turkey Minute describes itself as a portal “presenting news on Turkey in English amid ever-increasing pressure on the critical and independent media in the country”.
This is not the first time that Turkish citizens were reported as being abducted in Malaysia.
Last October, two Turkish citizens were believed to have been abducted by Turkish intelligence officers in Malaysia, according to Turkish Minute. The two men were later extradited back to Turkey after a request was made to Malaysian authorities by their Turkish counterparts.
Then on Dec 13, a visiting university director was arrested by police after Turkish authorities had informed the immigration department that his passport had been cancelled, before requesting for his extradition back to Turkey.
Turkish journalist Aydogan Vatandas wrote about the abduction of Izmet Ozcelik in the Huffington Post in January, saying that the victim had been held in the Sungai Buloh prison for almost a month.
According to Turkish Minute, the Turkish embassy here had asked Malaysian authorities to close down schools and other entities which are run by Turkish citizens linked to the Gulen movement.
