No link to gangs, say cops on clash near Ampang Hospital

May 2, 2017

Ampang Jaya police chief says two suspects, caught with weapons, have refused to cooperate in the investigations.

PETALING JAYA: Police say yesterday’s early morning brawl between 80 young men in front of the Ampang Hospital was not related to secret societies or illegal racing activities.

Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Hamzah Alias said the clash was caused by a misunderstanding between the youths who had gathered there.

“They all wanted to show off (tunjuk lagak). They like gathering together. However there was a misunderstanding, they started to challenge each other and a small fight ensued.

“They were not from any gang or Mat Rempit groups. They were just hanging out in big numbers over the long weekend,” he told FMT today.

Two men were arrested yesterday in the 3.15am incident when police on their routine rounds saw the 80 youths engaged in a fight near the hospital. They were using motorcycle helmets to swing at each other and the group was spread out on both sides of the road.

One person was also reportedly seen wielding a parang.

PANDAN INDAH: Police arrested two men for fighting in front of Hospital Ampang in the wee hours of Labour Day.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Hamzah Alias said four police officers were patrolling the area when they saw a group of about 80 men fighting and ordered them to disperse at around 3.15am on Monday.

“The men were using their motorcycle helmets as weapons and did not heed police orders to disperse,” he said.

The brawl was captured on video and the footage shared on social media.

In the video, two men can be seen trying to flee on motorcycles, while a group of men in pursuit tries to stop them from getting away.

As the camera pans, a group of people can be seen chasing and pulling two other motorcyclists off their machines.

Amidst the commotion, police arrested a 28-year-old man and another 33-year-old man who was wielding a parang.

“The suspect with the parang was trying to run away but we caught up with him and seized the weapon,” ACP Hamzah said.
