Strip my citizenship too, Bersatu Youth chief tells NGOs

Review citizenship granted to 1.75 million non-Malays from 1957 to 1970, Malay group says

BY YISWAREE PALANSAMY

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — A newly formed Malay-Muslim movement today said that it would be challenging the citizenship of 1.75 million Malaysians granted between 1957 and 1970.

This is following uproar over the government’s move to grant permanent residency to controversial Salafist preacher Dr Zakir Naik, as revealed by deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi this month.

Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz, the secretariat head for Barisan Bertindak Melayu Islam (Bertindak) alleged that the granting of the said status had violated the stipulated terms under the Federal Constitution, warranting a review.

“The secretariat in the meeting had agreed to consider few legal actions which we have been weighing and refining to be executed.

“For example, to review, with regards to the non-Malays citizenships which was given by the Malaya government in 1957 last time, whether or not it followed the laws of citizenship as stipulated under the Constitution.

“Truthfully, legal violations were found, based on research done. Therefore, we have been given the mandate to initiate legal action to question the granting of citizenship to non-Malays,” Mohd Khairul said.

He said that Schedule 1 of the Federal Constitution stipulates the taking of an oath of loyalty before citizenship if granted to a person here.

He alleged that this procedure however, was bypassed between 1957 and 1970, making 1.75 million people eligible for Malaysian citizenship.

“This was not done, so we will check whether this process is in violation of the Federal Constitution, and we want to review the granting of citizenship to the non-Malays, which were given at that time.

“This is a legal issue which needs to be brought to court and we want the court to decide,” he added.

Malay groups band together to fight those who are anti-Islam, warn of May 13 reoccurence

BY YISWAREE PALANSAMY

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — A group of 22 Malay NGOs today jointly formed a new front dedicated to oppose “rude and dominant” groups who have questioned the tenets of Islam and the rights of Muslims.

Calling themselves the  (Bertindak), the group targeted their anger towards Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) and its leader P. Waythamoorthy, whom they claim had been provoking the anger of the Malay-Muslim community here by demanding that controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik be sent back to India.

“But today’s meeting with its slogan ‘Melayu Bangkit’, is to remind and give a stern warning to the individual named P. Waythamoorthy and Hindraf, and those who behave like P. Waythamoorthy and Hindraf, to not continuously touch on Islam and Malay rights, akin to being thorn in the flesh.

“Because the effect of this can bring about untoward threats and we are worried that the black history of May 13 1969 would recur,” Bertindak secretariat head Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz.
.
In the press conference today Bertindak also suggested that Putrajaya again outlaw Hindraf, alleging that the movement had crossed its limits.

“It must also be reminded that how rude Hindraf was, by attempting to sue the British government in 2007, demanding a US$4 trillion payout (RM13.5 trillion), claiming that the British government brought them (Indians) to Tanah Melayu and exploited them as hard labourers.

“Likewise the issue played up by Hindraf which questioned the demolition of several Hindu temples, without realising that the Hindu temples in Malaysia are the most and not balanced with the ratio of the ethnic Indians and the Hindu faith,” Bertindak said.

However, the movement said that it does not aim to cause a rift with the ethnic Indian communities or other non-Malay communities, adding that it believe many share its vision and hopes to live together peacefully.

Malay-Muslim NGOs to launch nationwide campaign calling for ISA revival

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — A band of 22 Malay-Muslim NGOs today passed a resolution to launch a nationwide campaign to revive the Internal Security Act (ISA) to counter extremism.

The newly formed Barisan Bertindak Melayu Islam (Bertindak) said that the law needs to be put back in place to ensure harmony among the locals.

“Likewise the position of the ISA. Another thing we want to push for after this. Not just push, but we are willing to do tour programmes and explanation session nationwide to collect signatures and support from the people to revive ISA, immediately

“We will do this immediately, to send a clear sign to the government that ISA needs to relived for the country’s peace and harmony,” Bertindak secretariat chief Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz said.
.

The ISA was repealed in 2012.

Last year, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said that there is no need to revive the law as the newly legislated security laws are much more effective.

Khalid said that laws like the Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) has made the ISA irrelevant.
