Karak or Kerak Castle is a large Crusader castle located in al-Karak, Jordan. It is one of the largest crusader castles in the Levant.

Wisma Putra said the embassy had given a reminder to Malaysians particularly students at Mu’tah University near Bandar Karak to abide by the security orders issued by the authorities and the embassy itself.

AMMAN — Four terrorists were killed in a security operation in the southern governorate of Karak on Sunday after 10 people were killed in attacks, including four police officers and three gendarmes.

Two civilians and a Canadian citizen were killed, while 22 other civilians and police officers were injured when four gunmen stormed the southern city and fired at security and civilians before heading to the Karak Castle, official sources said.

Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani told The Jordan Times that the Kingdom will remain resilient against attempts to disturb its stability and security, extending Jordan’s condolences to the Canadian government over the loss of the Canadian national.

Momani and the Public Security Department (PSD) said all the civilians who were trapped in the Karak Castle when the terrorists withdrew there were freed following a five-hour rescue operation.

Security forces evacuated people who were residing near the Karak castle, a resident who preferred anonymity, told The Jordan Times.

Middle East Council of Churches denounces the terrorist attack in Karak
Amman, Dec. 19 (Petra)- President of Middle East Council of Churches of Jordan and Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem and all Palestine, Theophilos III, condemned the terror attack in the southern city of Karak which led to the martyrdom of a number of police personnel.

In a statement issued on Monday, he voiced support to Jordan’s leadership, people and security agencies and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“This terrorist attack that coincides with two religious occasions, the birth of the Prophet Muhammad and the birth of Jesus Christ will unify all Jordanians who will defend their country,” he added.

PUTRAJAYA: Eighteen Malaysian tourists who were at Karak Castle in Jordan when a shootout took place yesterday are safe, but two suffered injuries.

Wisma Putra said the 20 were brought to safety by Jordan security forces and are being sheltered and provided assistance by the local authorities.

Two of the Malaysians who were injured received treatment at a nearby hospital and are reported to be stable.

Wisma Putra said the Malaysian embassy in Amman had contacted Jordan authorities, who confirmed that the Malaysian visitors are in a secure location.

It said the embassy had also issued a reminder to Malaysians, particularly students at Mu’tah University near Bandar Karak, to abide by security orders issued by the authorities and the embassy itself.

The attack on Karak Castle in Karak Town, located 132 kilometres to the south of Amman, the capital of Jordan, resulted in the death of a tourist from Canada and a number of Jordanian police personnel.
