Assailants loyal to Islamic State forced an elderly priest to his knees before slitting his throat and took several worshippers hostage in a French church on Tuesday before police shot the attackers dead.
It was the latest in a wave of attacks in Europe inspired by the Islamist militant group based in Iraq and Syria that is on the defensive against a U.S.-led military coalition in which France is a major partner.
The knifemen entered the church during morning mass near the northern city of Rouen, northwest of Paris, killing Father Jacques Hamel, an 85-year-old parish priest, and taking four other people hostage, one of whom was seriously wounded.
“They forced him to his knees and he tried to defend himself and that’s when the drama began,” Sister Danielle, who escaped as the attackers slayed the priest, told RMC radio.
“They filmed themselves. It was like a sermon in Arabic around the altar,” the nun added.
Police shot the attackers dead as they emerged from the church in the Normandy town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray.
Speaking at the scene of the attack, President Francois Hollande said Islamic State had declared war on France, which should “use all its means” within the law to fight the group.
The president called it a “dreadful terrorist attack” and told reporters the attackers had pledged allegiance to Islamic State, against which France has launched air strikes in Syria and Iraq. News agency Amaq, which is affiliated with Islamic State, said two of its “soldiers” were involved.
“The threat remains very high,” Hollande said.
The White House condemned the attack and commended the French police for their “quick and decisive response.”

One of a pair of ISIS knifemen who stormed a church in Normandy before slitting the throat of an elderly priest has been named as known terror threat Adel Kermiche.
The 19-year-old ‘ISIS soldier’ was being monitored with an electronic ankle tag after he was arrested for twice attempting to flee France to join the terror group in Syria.
Despite having been released early from prison, Keriche’s bail conditions allowed him to roam unsupervised between 8.30am and 12.30pm, leaving him free to murder the priest in the attack carried out between 9am and 11am.
Kermiche and his accomplice – also known to French police – forced 84-year-old Father Jacques Hamel to kneel before filming themselves butchering him and performing a ‘sermon in Arabic’ at the altar of the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, according to witnesses.
Both were shot dead by police marksmen as they emerged from the building shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ following the attack that also left a nun critically injured.

The Muslim Isis sympathizers even forced two nuns to watch as they filmed themselves slitting the throat of the French Catholic priest Jacques Hamel. The nuns went on to confirm that the Muslim terrorists performed “a sort of sermon”.
And this is not the first time Muslims offer a priest at the sacrificial altar. Francois Murad, another priest was offered in the same way:

Mr Hollande called for unity between French Catholics and members of other communities. ‘What these terrorists want to do is to divide us, and today after the death of this priest I am thinking of all the Catholics of France and expressing my support,’ he said. French Prime Minister Manuel Valls tweeted that he was ‘horrified at the barbaric attack’ adding: ‘All France and all Catholics are bruised.’ Former Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin said he feared ‘everything is being done to trigger a war of religions.’
