Don’t misinterpret Jais’ Raya sermon, Selangor MB says

BY A. RUBAN

AMPANG, July 9 — Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali today urged the public not to misread the sermon by Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) released on the first day of the Hari Raya celebration last Wednesday.

He said the sermon, which thanked the tabling of PAS’s private member’s Bill to enhance the powers of the Shariah court, had nothing to do with expressing gratitude to PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

“It did not mention anything about the PAS president… it is your interpretation, don’t misinterpret,” he said when asked to comment on the sermon.

JAIS sermon wasn’t about giving thanks to Hadi, says Azmin

GOMBAK: Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali today clarified that the recent Aidilfitri sermon by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) was not about giving thanks to Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
“It did not mention anything about the Pas president, this is just your interpretation, don’t misinterpret,” he told reporters at the Selangor Hari Raya open house here today, which was attended by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
.
The sermon, he said, also gave thanks to the Special Powers and Appellate Court for dismissing a legal challenge by SIS Forum (Malaysia) and two others against the decision of the Selangor Islamic Affairs Council (MAIS) and the Selangor Fatwa Committee to brand SIS as deviating from Islamic teachings.

Disparaged by Jais on Raya, SIS turns the other cheek

BY RAM ANAND

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — Sisters in Islam (SIS) said today it will “set aside differences” this festive season after being disparaged by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) in its Hari Raya sermon today.

In a sermon at the Selangor state mosque earlier in the day, Jais said it was “grateful” after SIS’ bid to challenge the 2014 fatwa was dismissed by the High Court in June.

“On this day, all of us at SIS wish to put aside all differences, hopes for peace and pray for Allah’s blessings for all us,” SIS executive director Rozana Isa told Malay Mail Online when contacted for a response.

She added that today was a day of “coming together and solidarity” among Muslims and those from other faiths, saying that the past month has been “trying and difficult month given all the attacks on various communities in many countries.”

“We would like to commemorate and remember those who have lost their family members, friends and loved ones,” Rozana said.

Jais’ Hari Raya sermon lauds Hadi’s Bill, win over SIS in court

7 Jul 2016, PM 2:05 (Updated 7 Jul 2016, PM 3:05)

A sermon issued by the Selangor State Religious Department (Jais) in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations yesterday, lauded the Private Member’s Bill motioned by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang as a victory for Muslims.

Likewise, it lauded the Kuala Lumpur High Court decision to dismiss a challenge by the group Sister in Islam (SIS) against a Selangor fatwa declaring the group as ‘deviant’.

“We are thankful for our victory to bring the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act Amendment Bill 2016 motion in Parliament, which is purely to raise the stature of syariah courts in the country.

“We are also thankful for the decision by the Special Powers and Appellate High Court that rejected SIS’ application to challenge the Selangor Fatwa Council’s decision on liberalism in Selangor to protect the sanctity and primacy of Islam, so that it is not belittled in the eyes of other religions.

“Let us unite on the basis of faith and Islam that is sacred; turn our backs against pointless differences in opinion and return to Allah, and unite to uphold His commandments,” the sermon read.

The sermon would have been read out in mosques throughout Selangor yesterday morning.
