About 200 protesters brandishing bras rather than placards rallied outside the police headquarters in Wan Chai yesterday against the conviction of a woman jailed last week for three months and 15 days for assaulting an officer with her breast.

Activists fear the controversial conviction and sentence will deter women from joining future social movements.

Regardless of sex, demonstrators strapped bras to their chest to show support for Ng, including social worker Jordi Tsang Sing-cheung.

“The way I dress today looks quite ugly as a male, but it is not as ugly as the judgment, which is like pointing at a deer and calling it a horse, and the police’s decision to prosecute Ng without following guidelines,” said Ng, who wore a coconut bra.

平反胸脯有理！濫捕濫告可恥！

2015年3月1日，四名在參與元朗反水貨客示威的市民當場以「襲警及阻差辦公」被拘捕。當中一名女示威者吳麗英於被捕期間曾呼叫及投訴被非禮，但隨即被警方拘捕及反控告其以胸部襲警。

我們對於警方這種濫捕濫告的處事態度，十分憤怒；對於當事人由投訴被非禮，卻變成被控以胸部襲警，深感荒謬；對於判決結果，非常遺憾及失望。除此之外，我們亦擔心此例一開，不僅會對性暴力案造成深遠的影響，亦會便變相剝削女性日後參與公民運動的權利。因此，我們一群關心社會公義的性別平權團體和公民團體發起「胸群出動」表達強烈的不滿！詳情如下：

Breast Walk@Hong Kong

Our protest is to express our anger on Ms. Ng Lai-ying’s case. On 30 July, Ms Ng was sentenced to imprisonment for three and a half months for assaulting a police officer with her breast during an anti-parallel trader protest in March 2015.

We found this ridiculous as Ms Ng was originally making a complaint on suspected sexual assault of a police officer in the protest but now she was turned into an attacker. We also feel angry about that the case which made women’s breast as a weapon and seems saying that women are wrong to shout for help when she faced attack.

A recent Hong Kong court decision has astounded and enraged some local citizens—a 30-year-old woman was sentenced to jail time for “assaulting” a police officer with her breast during a scuffle at a protest against mainland Chinese traders.

Dozens of Ng’s supporters flooded into the courtroom this week and others demonstrated outside during a mitigation session on July 29, when Ng’s lawyer said she insisted her innocence and chose to “retain her integrity rather than lie … in exchange for a lighter sentence.” Around 200 protested at Hong Kong’s High Court on July 26, holding placards reading “A breast is NOT a weapon!” and “The rule of law is dead.”

Threats made against Hong Kong breast case magistrate

HONG KONG, Aug 1, 2015:

A deputy magistrate said he was “threatened” after convicting a protester who used her breasts to bump into a police officer, as he sentenced her to prison for three and a half months.

Michael Chan Pik-kiu at Tuen Mun Magistrates’ Court said he received threats after ruling in the latest case and a similar one in the past.

“I was threatened and was worried about my personal safety. But I won’t feel angry because of this and increase the sentence. Nor would I reduce the sentence due to fear. These threats do not affect my considerations for sentencing,” Chan said in court yesterday, according to the Hong Kong Standard.

Chan did not elaborate on how and when he was threatened.

Ng testified that during the protest the officer had reached out his arm to grasp the strap of her bag and that his hand had come in contact with her upper left breast, the South China Morning Post reports.

She told the court that she immediately yelled, “Indecent assault!”

But in his decision, the magistrate rejected those allegations, accusing Ng of lying in her testimony and instead finding her guilty of using her breast to bump the officer’s arm. “You used your female identity to trump up the allegation that the officer had molested you. This is a malicious act,” he said.

There was no word on what physical injuries, if any, the officer suffered.

A 30-year-old woman was found guilty in a Hong Kong court yesterday of assaulting a police officer using her breast during a March 1 protest against parallel trading.

Ng Lai-ying, along with three others, were accused of assaulting and obstructing or resisting police officers amid the violent protest in Yuen Long.

All defendants, who pleaded not guilty, were convicted in Tuen Mun Magistrates Court and remanded in custody, reports Shanghaiist.

The defense council claimed that the Chief Inspector, surnamed Chan, copped a feel of Ng’s left breast while reaching for the strap of her bag during the protest. After the incident occurred, Ng had reportedly shouted: “Indecent assault!”

However, Chan testified that it was Ng who bumped into his upper right arm with her breast and then made the false accusation. The Magistrate ruled that Ng had lied about being assaulted and called her reputation-damaging claims “malicious”, according to SCMP.
