Sarawak Report
editor-in-chief Clare Rewcastle Brown has accused BN of using a tampered email to accuse her of fabricating information about 1MDB and personalities related to the prime minister.

She also denied that Lester Melanyi, who was said to be a former Sarawak Report editor, had worked with the whistleblower website.

Yesterday, Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan said among the evidence was Rewcastle’s email in which she purportedly admitted to this by saying: “Thanks! Yes it was quite a job!.. Sitting up night after night cleverly forging all those documents!!!!”

Abdul Rahman, who is BN strategic communications director, said the email, as well as a video confession of Lester admitting to help Sarawak Report fabricate information, was handed to police.

The minister based this on a police report lodged by Ramesh Rao who leads a pro-BN NGO and had met Lester to obtain the material.

Email ‘creatively edited’

Rewcastle said the email referred to by Abdul Rahman was her correspondence with Lester, which she claimed was “creatively edited”.

The Sarawak Report editor added she started off her email by joking about the ‘forging’ but then went on to give a serious explanation which was omitted for BN to accuse her of fabrication.

The single inverted commas on the word “forging” was also edited out.

Rewcastle furnished a copy of the email to Malaysiakini to prove the tampering.

Lester, in the email, had said: “No wonder you have been so quiet, you have been busy digging, congrats, good job, I am so proud of you, hope all is well. Cheers!”.

To this, Rewcastle replied: Thanks! Yes it was quite a job!…. Sitting up night after night cleverly ‘forging’ all those documents!!!!

“Seriously, it has been a real challenge getting this story out there, but once I knew the truth I was determined to drag it out – I think I slept better than those party boys last night.”

Rewcastle pointed out that it would not make sense for Lester to congratulate her in an email about her stories if he was assisting her in fabricating the stories to begin with.

Editor confessing to Sarawak Report’s 1MDB document forgery never worked for site, says founder

Sarawak Report founder and editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown has dismissed new claims by Barisan Nasional (BN) that the whistleblower website published forged documents on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), saying that the editor who made a “confession” video on the matter never worked for the London-based site.

The new claim, revealed by BN’s strategic communications director Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan yesterday, is centred on Lester Melanyi, said to be a former editor with Sarawak Report.

But Rewcastle-Brown said Melanyi had never worked for the website, although he had worked for another initiative of hers, the independent radio station Radio Free Sarawak, in London.

Melanyi was named as the man who made the video confession in a police report lodged by Ramesh Rao Krishnan, the president of Pertubuhan Minda dan Sosial Prihatin (PMSP), a BN-friendly NGO, in Petaling Jaya yesterday morning.

This police report was then used by Rahman to urge for swift police investigations.

But Melanyi had never written a “single word” for the site, Rewcastle-Brown said, despite claims by Rahman that the former had been an editor there.

Melanyi is in fact a former editor of Sarawak Tribune, a Bornean newspaper which had been suspended after it published controversial cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in 2006, she said, and he had resigned from the paper over those cartoons.

Rewcastle-Brown said she met Melanyi when he worked with her for Radio Free Sarawak outfit, which was used to expose alleged corruption by former Sarawak chief minister Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud and his family.

That, however, was five years ago.

“I have not met him for a good number of years,” Rewcastle-Brown said, adding that Melanyi was likely “paid” for the video confession he had reportedly made.

“I assume someone paid him for this.”

It is not a hard deduction that if, as this ‘NGO’ guy (Ramesh Rao Krishnan Naidu) is alleging, that Lester Melanyi conspired and assisted Sarawak Report’s Editor Clare Rewcastle Brown in ‘forging’ the documents he would not be writing to her like this to ‘congratulate’ her on the story AFTER the whole thing had been published… Note also that he comments she had been quiet towards him in the preceding period – as opposed to working with him to concoct forgeries!

More Clutching At Straws….

A police report has been lodged against Sarawak Report for purportedly falsifying documents pertaining to 1MDB and colluding with opposition lawmakers.

This was revealed by BN strategic communications director Abdul Rahman Dahlan, who urged the authorities to take action.

Apart from this, the minister said police were also given a video confession from an ex-editor of Sarawak Report as well as an email allegedly from the London-based whistleblower website’s editor Claire Rewcastle.

The police report, sighted by Malaysiakini, was lodged by one Ramesh Rao Krishnan Naidu, an NGO leader, and was made before noon in Petaling Jaya today.

The report mentions that Ramesh travelled to Kuching to meet one Lester Melanyi, who had confessed to be involved in the falsifying of documents along with Rewcastle.

Abdul Rahman then asked the Interpol, United Kingdom and Malaysian police to work together swiftly and investigate thoroughly Rewcastle’s email.

He added he was confident the police would do so in the most professional and transparent manner.

“I am also confident Interpol will extend its fullest cooperation to the Malaysian police so that the truth will prevail on the issue of the falsification of information by the Sarawak Report,” he concluded.
