Suspect in scam case which led to suicide held

PETALING JAYA: Police have detained a suspect who is alleged to have conned a tuition teacher in Seri Kembangan, which later led to her taking her own life in grief.

Commercial crime officers from Bukit Aman detained the suspect in a fast food outlet in Ampang yesterday.

Sources from the police said they had been working on the case for some time and would be releasing information soon.

On June 21, Liew Wai Yi, 32, jumped to her death at an apartment block in Seri Kembangan.

Her sister Liew Wai Hong had reason to believe that Wai Yi killed herself because a con man had caused her to transfer RM75,000 to him over a span of three months.

Tuition teacher kills self after being duped of RM75,000

By Emmanuel Santa Maria Chin

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 — A broken heart and an empty bank account apparently drove a 32-year-old tuition teacher to commit suicide from the 10th floor of the Kampung Aman flats in Seri Kembangan on Sunday.

Liew Wai Yi from Seri Kembangan is believed to have transferred RM75,000 to a person called Aslam Roger Lloris Mustafaa who she had befriended in February through an instant messaging service only to find out she had been duped.

Her family lodged a police report about her death on Sunday and another on Tuesday alleging that she had been driven to suicide by Aslam to whom she had lent the money.

Even after her death, family members noted that Aslam had bombarded her mobile phone with messages asking for an additional RM5,000.

Tuition teacher commits suicide after being swindled by man she met online

KUALA LUMPUR: A 32-year-old tuition teacher committed suicide after she discovered that the boyfriend she had never met had cheated her out of RM75,000.

Liew Wai Yi had become reserved and depressed after she found out that the conman she met on social media had been lying to her and finally ended her life by plunging down from the 10th floor of a block of flats near her home in Seri Kembangan on June 21.

According to her distraught family who related her plight to MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau head Datuk Seri Michael Chong, Liew met the man who goes by the name ‘Aslam Roger Lloris Mustafaa’ or ‘Boy’ on social media in early February.

According to the deceased’s sister Liew Wai Hong, 28, they subsequently exchanged phone numbers and conversed through Whatsapp.

“After my sister’s death, I looked through her phone, on Feb 26, Aslam claimed that he suffered a disease called ‘Ventricular Septal Defect’ and demanded RM50,000 for his surgery at ‘Apollo Hospital’ in Singapore,” she said during a press conference at Wisma MCA today.

“However, after being confronted by my sister for lying about the hospital’s name in Singapore, he then claimed that he was being transferred to a Metropolitan Medical Centre in Jakarta after he was infected with the H4N4 virus after the operation,” she added.

She said after inspecting her sister’s belongings, she found out that the deceased had banked in a total of RM75,000 to a Hong Leong Bank account registered under the name of an Indian man since Feb 9, with the last transaction being made on April 29.
