Google Malaysia says happy to play along with student’s prank
PETALING JAYA, April 2 — Google Malaysia today said that it is more than happy to play along with a teenager’s April’s Fool prank, according to reports from The Star Online.
Fifteen-year-old teen Yusrim Karim made headlines earlier after he claimed to have submitted an application, dubbed Coker Chat, to Google Ideas, and received an email from the Internet giant praising his software. Karim also claimed that Google Ideas offered him a chance to work on a US$36mil (RM1333.14 million) project or US$50,000 (RM184,910) cash.
The SMK Merpati student went on to say that he opted for the cash prize, and told his teachers about his achievement.
While Google has subsequently denied reports of the Sandakan student’s “feat”, the tech giant said that it might invite the teenager to its office and even offer an ‘April Fool’ prize of sorts.

This is the biggest ever April Fool’s prank being pulled by anyone. Only thing wrong with it is – it’s not April 1, so there shouldn’t be any April Fool tricks.

Student wins Google award
App-solute hit: Yusrim’s app, Coker Chat, has been described as fantastic by Google Ideas.
KOTA KINABALU: A teenager’s app for an Internet-based messaging service that can provide instantaneous language translation has caught the attention of online giant Google.
Yusrim Karim, 15, submitted his app – Coker Chat, which he has been quietly developing for about five months – to Google Ideas late last year.
He said a few weeks later, a Google Ideas official contacted him via e-mail and, describing his software as fantastic, offered him a chance to work on a US$36mil (RM133.14mil) project or US$50,000 (RM184,910) cash.
The Form Three SMK Merpati student from Sandakan said he chose the cash.
“I am happy that Google Ideas accepted my software,” he said, adding that it made the long hours of working on it after school – sometimes until 3am – worth it.
Yusrim said his idea for the app was to make it easier for anyone in the world to communicate using their own language.
A think tank based in New York, Google Ideas is dedicated to understanding global challenges and coming up with technological solutions.

Google Malaysia denies awarding teen over translation app
PETALING JAYA: Google Malaysia has denied awarding any money or project to a teenager who created an app for an Internet-based messaging service that can provide instantaneous language translation.
…
According to Google Malaysia’s head of communications and public affairs department, Zeffri Yusoff, the story was “completely incorrect”, adding that there was no such competition organised by Google Ideas.
“I checked with Google Ideas and they did not send any e-mail to the boy.
“I can only speculate for now. The boy might have received a spam email,” Zeffri said, when contacted by The Star Online on Thursday.
Google Malaysia also said in a statement that the article Student wins Google Award was factually wrong.

Sabah teen being investigated for Google claim
KOTA KINABALU: A 15-year-old boy appears to have pulled off a prank leading his teachers into believing that he won an award from Internet giant Google.
Yusrim Karim had told his teachers at SMK Merpati in Sandakan about his achievement, which Google Malaysia denied following reports of his “feat”.
But his prank is not going down well with educationists as Sabah Education Department director Datuk Jame Alip has ordered an investigation.
“I have asked the Sandakan District Education Office to give a report about this,” he said on Thursday.
Google Malaysia’s head of communications and public affairs department Zeffri Yusof said the teen’s claim of the award was false.
