KUALA LUMPUR: Some 90,250 people have been evacuated as at 9am Thursday in five states ravaged by floods which are showing no sign of letting up.

It is believed to be the biggest number of flood evacuees in the nation’s history.

Kelantan had the highest number of evacuees at 32,343, followed by Terengganu (28,991), Pahang (24,316), Perak (4,335) and Perlis (265).

In KELANTAN, 5,190 people were moved out of their homes overnight to add to the 27,153 already evacuated as of last night, according to the state government flood portal.

The latest evacuees were from the Tanah Merah and Kota Baru districts. The state capital Kota Baru was paralysed by the floods after Sungai Kelantan burst its banks late Wednesday.

Seven of the eight other districts in the state are also affected by the floods, they being Gua Musang, Jeli, Kuala Krai, Machang, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh and Tumpat.

Kelantan floods divine impetus for hudud rollout, claims Nik Aziz’s son

Published: December 25, 2014 09:11 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 25 — The son of PAS’s spiritual leader has suggested that the worsening floods in Kelantan was a sign of “Allah’s wrath” and that the state government must continue with its bid to enforce hudud amid strong opposition.

Pasir Mas MP Nik Mohamad Abduh, the son of revered PAS leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, wrote on his Facebook page last night that the floods were intended to remind Muslims to return to Allah’s path, and necessity in implementing the Islamic penal code in the state.

“The flood is a reminder to all Muslims to return to Allah’s ways and stay away from His wrath.

“It necessitates the perseverance of the Kelantan government to implement hudud laws,” he said.

Tens of thousands in Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis and Pahang have had to be evacuated from their homes due to floods in various districts, Bernama reported yesterday at noon.

KOTA BARU: The water level in Sungai Kelantan at Tambatan Diraja exceeded the danger level and overflowed early today, inundating several low-lying areas in Kota Baru town and causing heavy traffic congestion.

The areas around Jalan Post Office Lama and Kubang Pasu Market were observed to be flooded this morning including the roads, and water level in the river reached 5.91 metres at 10am, exceeding the danger level of 5 metres.

Several business premises in town were also closed for fear of the worsening flood situation as Kota Baru had experienced a major flood in 2004, which paralysed the whole town and caused millions of ringgit in losses.

Meanwhile, several residents living in the floating houses close to the banks of Sungai Kelantan have also prepared early in the eventuality of floods by tying their floating houses to the anchors tightly to prevent these structures from being drifted away by the strong currents.

“We have secured our houses tightly, but what we are worried about are swift -moving floating logs that could hit our houses,” said Ali Shahbudin, 56, who lives in one of the “rumah rakit” (literallly, raft houses).
