Communal clashes behind murders of Myanmar nationals in Penang
Publication Date : 01-12-2014
Communal clashes have been identified as the reason behind the murder of 23 Myanmar nationals in Penang in the past 11 months.
Seven suspects have been arrested, and one of them has admitted to killing three of his countrymen following ethnic tensions between Muslims and Buddhists in Myanmar, the Malay Mail Online reported.
State police chief Abdul Rahim Hanafi described the arrests as a “positive breakthrough”.
“So far, they have been very cooperative. We have had some developments regarding the suspects,” the news website quoted him as saying.
A police source close to the investigations told the Malay Mail Online that the main suspect, a Muslim from the Arakan district in Myanmar, was arrested by a special police task force early last week. Six other suspects were later arrested by police based on the phone logs of the main suspect.
“The main suspect said six of his family members were killed during communal clashes in his home state a year ago. We are now piecing the connection between all 23 cases to see if they were linked,” the source said, adding that police hope to wrap up investigations in the next few weeks.

Myanmar refugee slits wrist of man who tried to rob him
SEREMBAN: Four robbers picked the wrong victim when they assaulted a Myanmar refugee at his house in Sikamat here early Saturday.
The victim, who holds a United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) card, retaliated by grabbing a machete and slit the wrist of one of his assailants.
Badly injured, the 26-year-old robber tried to flee from the house in Taman Sikamat Utama and collapsed in some bushes about 50m away.
His accomplices escaped in a white van in the incident which occurred about 3.30am.
Seremban police chief ACP Muhamad Zaki Harun said the injured man, who also a UNHCR card holder, was detained to facilitate investigations.
He said the man was warded at the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital.
He said the police seized a blood-stained machete, two necklaces, a pair of earrings and cash totalling about RM5,000 at the scene where the suspect was found writhing in pain.

Myanmars seek refuge in temple after the recent spate of murders
GEORGE TOWN: In the wake of the murders involving their compatriots in the state, some fearful Myanmar nationals have turned to a Buddhist temple here for shelter, just as talk of a locally-based Myanmar mastermind surfaced. The allegation was, however, dismissed by a Myanmar non-governmental organisation (NGO).
Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple chief priest Ven Sayadaw U Panna Vamsa said he had allowed some of these people, who felt threatened, to spend a few days in the temple.
“Lay Buddhists cannot live here. But out of compassion, I have allowed them a respite here before they decide on their next move.”
Vamsa urged the Government to extend protection to anyone in need following the murders of 20 Myanmars – all males and many in a gruesome manner – in the state this year. The latest involved a construction worker who was found with his throat slit in Jarak Atas, Tasek Gelugor, on Monday.
..
Meanwhile, a source in the local Myanmar community believed that the killings in Penang were being instigated by a wealthy Myanmar businessman from Meiktila now staying in Malaysia.
…
Myanmar Ethnic Rohingyas Human Rights Organisation Malaysia president Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani said the slayings were most likely due to personal issues rather than a carry-on effect of inter-ethnic violence back home.

Another body found with throat slit
Gruesome task: Policemen investigating the scene of the murder at Jarak Atas, Tasek Gelugor
BUTTERWORTH: Another Myanmar national was found dead with his throat slit in Jarak Atas, Tasek Gelugor here, making him the 20th Myanmar to be murdered in the state this year.
The body of construction worker Hein Lat Kyaw, 34, was found in an oil palm estate by a passer-by who alerted the police at about 8.30am yesterday.
Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mazlan Kesah said investigations showed the latest incident was not linked to any of the 18 murder cases involving 20 Myanmmar nationals in the state.
“Other than the slit throat, there were also stab wounds on his chest, abdomen and buttocks, and injuries on his left wrist. The man had been dead for less than 24 hours when found.
“We believe the victim was killed elsewhere before he was dumped here. Our checks showed that he worked at a construction company in Taman Kelasah, Seberang Jaya.

Myanmars stay alert when violence flares at home
Anxious and secure: Kyaw Kyaw with his sister Win Win Than, 23, at the Taman Juru flats in Juru, Bukit Mertajam.
GEORGE TOWN: Whenever news of communal clashes in their homeland reaches here, factory worker Soe Kyaw Kyaw will stay alert whenever he goes out.
He said there was always the fear that he could be attacked by his countrymen using helmets or being kicked to the ground while cycling on the road.
“It causes anxiety among us whenever there’s news about conflict between Muslims and Buddhists in Myanmar,” he said at his flat in Taman Juru, Bukit Mertajam.
“There would be confrontation and physical harassment – but not to the extent of taking someone’s life.”
In recent months, the growing number of Myanmar nationals killed in Penang has caused anxiety among the community and locals here.
Kyaw Kyaw, who has been staying here for eight years, said he liked his neighbourhood, but he heard “horror” stories about his friends staying in other districts.
“Two of my friends were robbed in Bukit Tengah and one of them was killed,” said Kyaw Kyaw.
“The one who survived the attack has since flown home,” he said, adding that in most instances, fights or arguments between Myanmar nationals only occurred if one was drunk.

GEORGE TOWN (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) – Famed for its old world charm and street food, Penang is now drawing attention for a different reason.
Police records reveal that since January, 46 murders have been reported here, with 65 per cent or 30 cases involving foreigners.
Of the murdered foreigners, 17 involved Myanmar nationals who had their throats slit.
Penang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Abdul Rahim Hanafi told Sunday Star yesterday that a special taskforce had been set up to look into the murders. He called for calm and patience, adding that “the situation is under control”.

Casual dismissals by police worrying

NOVEMBER 3 ― The deafening silence by the authorities over 17 deaths in Penang involving Myanmar nationals in the past 10 months is both frightening and shocking.
Although most of the victims are believed to be Buddhists, police have been quick to dispel talks the deaths were related to religious and ethnic conflicts.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi and even Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had said there were no evidence at this point to suggest the cases were related to communal clashes.
The casual dismissal by police over the matter and the fact that no individuals had been arrested over the killings raises numerous questions.
Is there a serial killer among us? Has action been slow because the victims are foreigners?
If the murders are not related to ethnic clashes, then does this mean there is a serial killer on the loose in the state, given the modus operandi of the murders are the same?
The deceased were all male, most worked in factories and were found with their throats slit. Their bodies were dumped at plantations, bushes and other deserted areas mainly in Seberang Prai.
What police have told us, thus far, is they have only managed to seize several weapons, including knives, in relation to the killings.
Police have also said they were finding it difficult to investigate due to language barrier and assistance had been sought from Bukit Aman.
Penang police said they had sought assistance from Federal police, yet we are being informed they were still waiting for a reply from Bukit Aman. It has been more than a month.

THE MYSTERY OF 17 MURDERED MYANMARESE
On the status of investigation into the 16 cases, Abdul Rahim said they were awaiting feedback from Bukit Aman on request for assistance.
A source close to the investigation said the modus operandi of the latest killing had similarities to earlier murders.
Malay Mail had on September 18 front-paged a report that the victims were believed to have been killed over disputes between Muslims and Buddhists from Myanmar.

NIBONG TEBAL, Oct 27 — A 17th case of a murder victim with his throat slit occurred over the weekend in Penang.
The decomposed remains of a man, believed to be a foreigner, was found at a nursery near a housing project in Tiga Kongsi, Simpang Ampat, on Saturday night.
He was killed in a similar manner in which 16 other Myanmar nationals were murdered in the state this year.
Police were quick to downplay it, saying the murder had nothing to do with communal clashes between Myanmar nationals, but could not provide a motive for the killings.
Like in previous cases, the victim in the latest incident was believed to have been killed elsewhere and dumped in a remote area.
State criminal investigation department chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said police received a tip-off about a foul smell in the area at about 10pm.
“We found a highly decomposed body wrapped in newspapers and covered with boxes,” Mazlan said.
“The victim, clad in T-shirt and tracksuit, is believed to be in his 30s and we suspect he was killed elsewhere 48 hours earlier.
The victim’s throat was slit and there were also four deep wounds on his head.
His nationality is not known as there were no documents on him — just as in the case of the 16 murdered Myanmar nationals who were mostly factory workers.

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 19 — A growing number of Myanmar nationals in Penang are living in fear following the murder of 20 of their countrymen believed to be related to communal clashes between Muslims and Buddhists.
Zaw Latt, a Buddhist from the province of Mahoi, said he feared for his safety, especially at night.
The 28-year-old worker at a printing company at the Prai Industrial Estate said: “My friends told me about the recent double-murder in Kampung Jawa, Bukit Mertajam. I am afraid to leave my hostel alone at night.”
He said he was praying for the safety of the several thousand Myanmar nationals living in Penang.
“I hope my government will do something to resolve the problem as no one should feel unsafe when they are in a foreign land,” he said.

Gruesome Myanmar communal murders grip Penang

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 18 — Twenty people savagely murdered in Penang this year are believed to be victims of communal clashes between Muslims and Buddhists from Myanmar.
Police said the latest was the double-murder of two men in their 30s who had their throats slit and their bodies dumped in an oil palm plantation in Kampung Manggis in Bukit Mertajam on Monday.
Police are worried religious and ethnic tensions between the two groups in Myanmar have bubbled to surface in the state with deadly consequences. Most of the victims were Buddhists.
They have been unable to head off the violence due to communication problems with both
communities.
State deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said a special task force has been set up by police to investigate the deaths.
“We are probing if religious disputes are involved,” he said.
…
Police sources said the victims, mostly factory workers, were brutally killed and were found with their throats slit.
A source said: “Six people were been killed in central Seberang Prai in three separate cases while the remains of two other victims were discovered in southern Seberang Prai in the last four months.
“The remaining cases were reported in northern Seberang Prai while several other cases have also been occurred on the island.”
The source said the victims, all men, aged between 20 and 40 were abducted from their homes and murdered elsewhere.
Most of the victims were found without documents and their remains were identified by colleagues and friends.
