Bicycle lanes in Penang seen as a flop

GEORGE TOWN – A state MCA Youth leader hit out at the state government for its poor planning of bicycle lanes.

Tanjung MCA Youth chief Lim Swee Bok said creating bicycles lanes without detailed planning was a total waste of money and put cyclists and pedestrians at risk.

“The state government should build bicycle lanes only after releasing the Penang Structure Plan and Local Plan to ensure public safety,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference at a hotel here during a tour of the bicycle lanes near Komtar yesterday, Lim said it was risky for cyclists to have to share bicycle lanes with pedestrians.

“This is because the lanes are not wide enough for both groups to use at the same time,” he added.

Komtar MCA Task Force head Tan Hing Teik said the state spent RM30m (S$10 million) to build casually painted bicycle lanes on the narrow streets of George Town. ”

The state must accept the fact that the present road design and urban planning in Penang are meant for cars and unfriendly for bicycles,” he said.

Accidents, injuries and deaths related to cycling will never match the number from motorcycles but if it happened to you or your teenaged son/daughter, that’s one tragedy too many!

Sometimes, it can happen like this: a student of mine went out at 7.30pm to eat dinner at a food center nearby. She rode her bicycle. It had no light, so she couldn’t be easily seen! On her way home, a car brushed against her bicycle, and she fell and hit her head on the road. She was unconscious, and never woke up.She was 15. Who would ever have thought it could have happened like this? If only she had had a crash helmet on!

Boy jumps off bicycle before lorry crushes it

SINGAPORE – He had gone downstairs to ride his bicycle, as he often did.

But the 16-year-old boy later phoned his grandmother, saying he had fallen and needed help.

When Madam Peng arrived at the junction of Sims Avenue and Sims Way at about 6pm on Monday, she was horrified to see her grandson sitting beside a huge lorry.

His bicycle had been crushed by a wheel of the lorry.

The boy had escaped with minor injuries to his arms and leg.

When Madam Peng arrived at the scene, she said the lorry driver confronted her angrily, asking: “How could you allow your boy to cycle any how?”

PETALING JAYA: Go in small groups and wear bright colours. These are measures that can help cyclists stay safe on the road, said Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) director-general Prof Wong Shaw Voon.

He said cyclists should also try to avoid roads that are not designated for them, such as highways, although many have no choice but to share highways with other drivers.

“When you live in urban settings there are highways everywhere. Sometimes you cannot avoid it.

“(So) cyclists should be aware of the risks they are taking and take appropriate steps to minimise them,” Wong said.

On Sunday, cyclist Noor Azli Sawari was hit by a car on the Kajang-Silk Highway, sustaining head injuries and forced to undergo surgery.

“He usually rides along the same route with a group of friends. But yesterday he could not join them, so he went alone. What can we say? It is his fate,” said his friend Shaiful Baba.

There have been several incidents of cyclists being knocked down by motorists while riding on roads and highways.

A new danger on the roads

PETALING JAYA: Cyclists, especially youngsters on trendy bicycles, riding three or four abreast are a common sight these days and they seem to have little care about the danger they are putting themselves and other road users in – police statistics are proof of this.

According to the Royal Malaysian Police, 360 cases involving cyclists were recorded in 2012, resulting in 156 deaths.

So far this year, the number has gone up to 387 cases with 151 deaths.

K. Balasupramaniam, president of Road Safety Marshal Club (RSMC), said cycling is now seen as a hip, environment-friendly trend.

“As such not many are concerned about the proper safety requirements while riding bicycles,” he said, adding that cyclists are also bound by traffic rules.
