Blurry images cause delay in grenade attack probe, says police

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 — After scouring close to 100 video surveillance cameras in Bukit Bintang following the grenade attack there last month, police hit a roadblock as blurry images from street cameras caused a major setback to their investigations.
The failure to capture the suspects in one of the busiest streets in the city raised questions over the effectiveness of surveillance equipment belonging to both private business premises and Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
This, without a doubt, delayed investigations as police continued to track down the suspects who threw hand grenades at a group of people exiting Cherry Blossom pub in Sun Complex on Oct 9.
A car jockey was killed while 13 others were injured in the incident.
City police chief DCP Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa yesterday released a facial sketch of one of the suspects after experts from the Forensic Unit spent weeks scrutinising the poor images from the close-circuit television cameras.
“Forensic experts spent weeks to come up with the sketch based on poor images caught on camera,” he said.
Police have only come up with one sketch. They were unable to come up with another for the second suspect.

KUALA LUMPUR: City police have released a sketch of a male suspect allegedly involved in the hand grenade attack in front of a nightclub in Sun Complex, Bukit Bintang here on Oct 9.
Kuala Lumpur police chief SDCP Datuk Tajudin Md Isa on Tuesday said the sketches were derived from footage of four CCTV cameras at the scene of the incident.
He also said that the footage showed there were two suspects who hurled the grenade in the direction of a group of people who had just exited the nightclub.
“The footage was referred to the forensic unit, who commissioned a professional artist to sketch an image of the suspect involved.
“We believe the suspect is in his 40s,” he said at a press conference at the KL police headquarters.
Tajudin said police believe the two suspects then ran towards a black Proton Perdana parked near the area immediately after the incident.

“The recording shows the movements of two suspects who threw the bombs at their target, who was on his way out from the night club. We are still investigating the contents of the video,” added Tajudin.

Malaysian police have arrested 5 men in connection with a grenade attack at Sun Complex in Kuala Lumpur that killed one and injured 12, according to a report on The Star.
This is coming after police raided 6 nightclubs in Bukit Bintang during the hunt for triad kingpin “Ah Hai”, the suspected target in the attack. Ah Hai later turned himself in for police.
It is learnt that Ah Hai was at the scene at the time of the incident but escaped unhurt when a second hand grenade that was thrown from the second floor of a building failed to explode. The 53-year-old Ah Hai was reported to have led an underworld gang for more than two decades. He is believed to be from Gang 21, which has been running illegal businesses here including gambling.
He left the police station after he recorded his statement. The police also recorded the statements of 21 people to facilitate investigations into the incident.

Grenade attack in Bukit Bintang was targeted at a top Imbi gangster involved in a boiling online gambling war http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/grenade-attack-linked-to-gambling-kingpin-source-says …
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — The grenade attack in Bukit Bintang that killed one man and wounded 13 others yesterday was targeted at a top Imbi gangster involved in a boiling online gambling war, Malay Mail revealed.
A source close to the police investigations said the 53-year-old man known as “Ah Hai” was seeking to expand his gambling empire by recruiting bookies from other syndicates with the promise of higher profits.
This angered rival gambling syndicates that are believed to have put up a hit on him.
At 4am yesterday, two hitmen hurled two grenades from the second floor of the Sun Plaza parking just as Ah Hai was leaving the Cherry Blossom club at the basement of the building with his entourage.
The source said Ah Hai was at the club to negotiate a bookie recruitment drive and it is believed his rivals came to know about the meeting.
“Ah Hai was meant to be killed instantly as he was ‘pinching’ almost everyone who were working for the top bookies,” he said.
“CCTV footage at the parking lot shows two men hurling the grenades. They then immediately got into a car and fled. Police are still trying to establish the suspects’ identities as the recording was not clear.”
Ah Hai escaped unscathed while car jockey Tiong Kwong Yie, 36, died after the grenade exploded and injured 13 others including his driver and personal bodyguard.
