How Barcelona’s homeless are guiding tourists round the city’s underbelly

How Barcelona’s homeless are guiding tourists round the city’s underbelly

One organisation in Spain’s most popular tourist destination is employing homeless people as tour guides to offer an alternative view of the city

Hidden City Tours, using homeless people to offer a street's eye view of Barcelona
Hidden City Tours: who better to show you around the streets of Barcelona than someone who has lived on those very streets?

Juan knows Barcelona’s downtown very well; he has spent four years sleeping rough on its streets. An incident with drugs had brought about his deportation from Germany, where he was subsequently banned from living or working for a decade.

The Andalusian found himself all alone, back in a country that was no less strange despite being his original home. “My parents and sister were still in Germany, where our family moved when I was six,” he says. “So the plan was to stay here for a while and then move to the Netherlands, where I would at least be a three-hour car ride away from them. But then I ran out of money.”

Juan is now a guide for Hidden City Tours, half social project, half tourism agency, offering an alternative view of Barcelona. The only difference is that up to three times a day, come rain or shine, homeless people are your trusty guides. As the company motto asserts, who better to show you around the streets of Barcelona than someone who has lived on those very streets?

Video showing Spanish police beating and expelling migrant sparks outrage

MADRID (AFP) – A video of Spanish police beating an African migrant with a truncheon and carrying him apparently unconscious back across the border to Morocco caused outrage in Spain on Friday.

The man was one of about 100 migrants who tried to climb from Moroccan soil over a 6m-high fence into the Spanish territory of Melilla on Wednesday.

The local humanitarian group Prodein, which filmed the video, identified the man as a 23-year-old Cameroonian named Danny.

Spain: Outraged crowd protest Madrid EBOLA cases

Five days after Ebola case confirmed, Deputy PM takes control of crisis

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría on Friday took control of the government’s management of the Ebola crisis, which began on Monday when a nursing assistant was confirmed to have contracted the virus while caring for an infected Spanish missionary.

Five days after the news of Teresa Romero’s condition was made public, and with Health Minister Ana Mato yet to give any explanations regarding the chain of errors that have characterised the crisis, the government appeared to be taking control of the situation on Friday, announcing that it would be creating a committee of scientific experts on the virus.

Sáenz de Santamaría will take charge of the crisis committee that will be formed by representatives from the ministries of Defense, Interior, Presidency, Economy and Justice. What’s more, it will be made up of a representative from the Madrid regional health department, the president of the Scientific Committee for Ebola and a representative from Carlos III Hospital, where confirmed patients and suspected cases are being treated. The committee will meet at least once a day and a number of its members will be dedicated exclusively to the crisis.

Fear and panic grips Spain – scared medical staff refuse to treat suspected Ebola cases

October 2014MADRID – Scared medical staff in Madrid refused to treat possible Ebola patients on Thursday for fear of becoming infected themselves, as the condition of the Spanish nurse who contracted the virus deteriorated further. The Carlos III hospital, where seven quarantined cases are being treated, has had to draft in extra staff after nurses there refused to turn up for shifts. “There are members of staff who are cancelling their contracts so that they don’t have to enter [rooms with possible Ebola patients],” said Elvira Gonzalez of the SAE nurses union. Although no formal absentee figures have been released, a number of nurses and health technicians have formally resigned from their posts, while others have made excuses to avoid going into work. “A lot of people are calling in sick,” one member of staff told EL PAIS newspaper. “They are saying they have period pains, or that they feel dizzy. People are anxious and can’t be expected to work like that.” Staff members who have agreed to work in the hospital’s isolation ward are receiving psychological counseling. –Telegraph

Protests As Ebola Victim’s Dog Put Down WRONG DECISION – BE VERY ASHAMED

Animal rights activists scuffled with police after an international social media campaign failed to persuade authorities in Spain to spare a dog whose owner contracted ebola – and whose condition has worsened.

Almost 400,000 people signed a petition to save nursing assistant Teresa Romero’s dog, Excalibur.

Mrs Romero’s condition deteriorated on Thursday and she is now on a ventilator, according to a hospital official.

The 40-year-old is the first person to contract the virus outside of Africa .

Protests erupted outside her apartment in Alcorcon, briefly stopping a police van pulling away with the family pet.

Demonstrators chanted “assassins” as batons were used to clear the road.

Madrid’s regional government later said the mixed-breed dog was sedated, euthanised and incinerated.

Spain sets up “crisis committee” to deal with impact of

Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy has set up a special committee to deal with the impact of Europe’s first case of Ebola.

Mr Rajoy admitted that the situation was “complex and difficult”, but stressed that the government had a clear plan of what needed to be done.

Spanish nurse Teresa Romero is said to be gravely ill, after catching the haemorrhagic fever while caring for patients brought from West Africa.

Speaking outside Madrid’s Carlos III hospital, where the 44-year-old Spanish nurse is being treated, Mr Rajoy said: “Our first priority is Teresa Romero – she is the only person that we know has the illness”.

The prime minister said the second key task was to find others who might have caught the virus and investigate how this happened.

He was speaking as seven more people in Spain were being monitored in hospital for suspected Ebola.

They include two hairdressers who came into contact with Ms Romero.

The nurse’s apartment in Alcorcon, near Madrid, has been sealed.

WAS IT A HANKERING FOR WEIRD SEX THAT MADE HER LUST AFTER THE DWARF?

It is not unusual for dwarfs to be hired as entertainers at hen and stag parties in Spain and several websites offer the services of “miniboys” as they are known in Spain.

A Spanish woman who gave birth to a baby with dwarfism was reportedly forced to confess to having sex with a dwarf stripper at her bachelorette party nine months before.

Her husband was left shocked when he was presented with the tiny tot at a hospital in Valencia earlier this month.

Convinced there’d been some sort of mix-up, he reportedly demanded an explanation from doctors, according to Levante-EMV.

However, when medics explained that it was definitely his wife’s child, she later admitted to the infidelity.

Levante-EMV reports that the woman, who has not been named, confessed to sleeping with the stripper at her bachelorette night, just before they got married earlier this year.

The woman has not been named, but according to local reports she felt compelled to tell her husband after questions were raised by friends who had accompanied her on the hen night, which took place at the beginning of the year.

Spanish website LasCincoDelDia, which broke the news, said: “Neither her closest female friends or her family knew she had sex with the midget stripper but once she had her son in her arms, she broke down and confessed what had happened.

“As you can imagine no-one that sleeps with a stripper at her hen night broadcasts it or at least they try to take their secret to the grave.

“But the protagonist of this episode had no choice but to confess and could never have pretended the boy was her husband’s because of a little problem – the child was born with dwarfism.”
