Canadian police say Valentine’s Day mass shooting plot foiled

TORONTO: Canadian police said on Friday they foiled a plot in which at least two people allegedly planned to commit a mass shooting in the East Coast province of Nova Scotia on Valentine’s Day.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement the plot involved a 19-year-old man from Timberlea, Nova Scotia, and a 23-year-old woman from Geneva, Illinois.

Police said they obtained information that suggested the two had access to firearms and intended to go to a public venue in the Halifax, Nova Scotia, region on Feb. 14 to kill people, and then themselves.

The police statement did not suggest a possible motive, but officers told a media briefing they would not characterize it as a “terrorist event.”

Evidence suggested two other Nova Scotia males, aged 20 and 17, were involved, though their role is still to be determined, police said.

Police said they found the 19-year-old male dead at a residence early on Friday and the 20-year-old male and 23-year-old female were arrested at the Halifax airport. The 17-year-old male was arrested elsewhere.

Air Canada crash landing: propeller slices into window injuring passenger

An Air Canada passenger was injured last week after a plane propeller broke off and sliced through the cabin, striking her on the head

As the plane took off, “all of the sudden there was a big bang,” Melissa Menard, one of Ms Kurylo’s friends, told The Globe.

The captain announced that they had blown a tire and would try to land in Edmonton, she added, where the emergency services were waiting for the plane on the runway.

The landing initially seemed to be going smoothly until passengers heard “a lot of rattling” as they touched down on the runway. The right landing gear then collapsed and sparks flew as the right undercarriage dragged along the tarmac.

After the plane stopped, a moment’s silence was broken by cheers and whistles from passengers who then had to hurry out of the cabin as it filled with smoke.

The shocking number of sexual assaults in Canada every year

Embedded image permalink

460,000. It’s an alarming number that encompasses several statistics about the reality of sexual assault in Canada.

Following the sexual abuse allegations against former CBC employee Jian Ghomeshi, which now has eight women who allege assault or harassment from the former “Q” host, women’s service organization YWCA Canada released this infographic on Tuesday, focusing on the legal aspect of violence against women.

According to the graphic, 33 out of every 1,000 sexual assault cases are reported to the police, and 29 are recorded as a crime. While these numbers speak volumes about how many assailants walk free, and why women may be afraid to press charges up against their abusers, the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres adds sexual assault is also a difficult crime to prove — there are rarely any witnesses and not always physical evidence.

A pair of campers were awoken by a black bear climbing on the roof of their camper van.

The two travellers were asleep in their vehicle near Watson Lake in the Northern Territories, Canada when they were awoken at 5.00am by the young black bear. It began pushing their vehicle and sniffing around for food.

Footage captured by the pair also shows the creature peering in through the window before giving up and wandering off.

Although the campers captured the video in July last year, they only recently shared the video online.

Bodies of four babies found in Canada storage locker

OTTAWA: The bodies of four babies have been discovered in a storage locker in the western Canadian city of Winnipeg, police said on Tuesday (Oct 21).

Police said they are “speaking with a number of individuals” as part of their investigation into the gruesome discovery, while an autopsy was underway.

“It’s too early to say what has transpired,” Constable Eric Hofley told a press conference, describing the discovery as “disturbing” and “tragic beyond belief.” He said he was unaware of any missing infants in the city.

Even if it was not a case of foul play, he added, “You’re not allowed to store human remains in a storage locker.”

Driver runs over two Canadian soldiers outside Montreal, police shoot and kill driver after high-speed chase

Driver who hit 2 Canadian Forces members shot by police in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu

A driver who was fatally shot by police after striking two Canadian Forces members in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., earlier today was known to federal authorities as someone who may have been “radicalized,” according to the RCMP and the Prime Minister’s Officer.

Martin Rouleau, 25, was a resident of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and was known to provincial and federal police.

“We are at the beginning of an investigation. Several hypotheses are being looked at,” said Sgt. Michel Brunet, adding that investigators would study various angles, including mental illness and terrorism.

Police confirmed the suspect’s death Monday evening, several hours after he was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The incident began at around 11:30 a.m. ET when the two soldiers were hit in a parking lot of a commercial plaza. Both were injured, one critically.

The incident was raised in the House of Commons this afternoon by Conservative MP Randy Hoback, who questioned Prime Minister Stephen Harper about “unconfirmed reports of a possible terror attack” targeting members of the Canadian Forces.

The RCMP issued a statement late Monday evening, confirming the suspect was also known to federal authorities.

“This individual was known to federal authorities including our Integrated National Security Investigations team in Montreal who along with other authorities were concerned that he had become radicalized. Out of respect and deference to the ongoing criminal investigation arising from today’s terrible events, the RCMP will not comment further except to say that we are working with our law enforcement partners to ensure all avenues of investigation are pursued,” the statement said.

Minutes later, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office also issued a written statement suggesting Canadians should be vigilant.

“Federal authorities have confirmed that there are indications that this is clearly an individual who has been radicalized. As security agencies of Canada reported … Canadians should remain vigilant.”

MARIJUANA OR CANABIS is not just a harmless herb.

Research has shown that marijuana is at least as harmful as alcohol to the developing brain. More than 5% of all Canadians aged 15 to 24 meet the criteria for cannabis abuse or dependence.

Young Canadians see marijuana as a harmless herb. They’re wrong From

Even though teens who smoke pot are at higher risk for cognitive problems, motor-vehicle accidents and substance abuse, young Canadians see marijuana as a harmless herb.

Pot, teens say, helps them to relax, focus, drive better, be less violent and think more creatively, according to a survey by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse.

And while young people noted downsides such as “becoming lazy,” the negative effects paled in comparison with the benefits they described. Some believed marijuana could “purify” the immune system, others said it could cure cancer.

This knowledge gap is worrisome considering that Canadian adolescents have the highest rate of cannabis use in the developed world, said Dr. Sheryl Spithoff, family physician and addictions medicine specialist at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto.

In fact, young Canadians don’t think of marijuana as an actual drug. They see it as a “natural” and non-addictive alternative to cigarettes, the 2013 survey found, and perceived weed as much safer than alcohol.

Forget what you know. You’ve never seen Canadian history like this before.

Mark Truelove meticulously colourizes black and white photos from our past. Basic portraits can take him several hours and more complex images can occupy him for much, much longer — think days.

Truelove, who lives in B.C.’s Fraser Valley, strives to ensure he uses accurate colour references for everything from sports uniforms to advertisements. But he says he’s always happy to correct something if someone spots an error. He posts his photos on his website, Canadian Colour, and on Facebook and Twitter.

“Our ancestors didn’t live in a dull, grey world, their world was as colourful as ours” Truelove said. “So it is great to see them in that way.”

B.C. teen killed by train was wearing headphones, texing: police

A 16-year-old girl likely didn’t see or hear the freight train that struck and killed her because she was distracted by her phone and using headphones, said police in B.C.’s Fraser Valley.

Tiffany Williams was walking on railway tracks in Maple Ridge early Sunday afternoon when she was hit by an eastbound CP Rail train, said the B.C. Coroners Service.

“It appears she did not realize there was an approaching train,” said RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dunlop on Monday. “Despite all the efforts to catch the teen’s attention and stop the train, it struck and killed the girl.”

Police believe that Williams was wearing ear bud headphones, listening to music, and texting on her phone at the time, reported the Maple Ridge News.

Darrell Phillips, Tiffany’s father, had a message for other kids, according to CBC News.

“Take your headphones out of your ears. Don’t walk the tracks. Put [only] one headphone in,” he said. “My daughter died because of this. So please… you do not want to do this to your parents.”

Early Wednesday morning, Canada will fall under a red-hued lunar eclipse, now commonly called a “Blood Moon.” The moon will fall on the exact opposite side of the Earth, whose shadow will cast a red pall over the moon.

“There’s still light getting to the moon that’s actually skimming the horizon around the circular earth, and it’s like a 360-degree sunset…it’s that red-sunset type of light that illuminates the moon and causes it be a reddish colour,” said Chris Vaughan, a telescope operator and educator outreach specialist with the David Dunlap Observatory north of Toronto, in an interview.
