Showgoers tell of ‘insecure seatbelts’ in AirMaxx 360 ride after Malaysian girl killed

PETALING JAYA: Visitors of the Royal Adelaide Show where a Malaysian girl died after being flung from a spinning ride had encountered problems including insecure seatbelts, reported The Courier Mail.

Amanda Watson, said she was horrified but unsurprised when she heard that the 8-year-old girl had been killed after being flung from the AirMaxx 360 on Friday afternoon.

Watson, who took the ride on Thursday with her daughter said an attendant securing restraints on all riders appeared to be in a bad mood.

“We were the last ones to be locked in and the girl said, ‘I’m effing over this; I’ve had enough of it’,” she told the Sunday Mail.

“I kind of took it she was over today – but it was only about 11am,” Watson added.

She said that just moments after the ride started, the operator stopped it and pointed out a particular seat to the attendant.

“It turns out she hadn’t clipped the seat down properly on it,” Watson said.

“She cracked it at him. She wasn’t happy he’d stopped the ride,” she added.

Watson said her partner, Nicholas Milne, told her after the ride was over that his seatbelt also was not fastened securely and had “flung open a bit” although he fixed it himself.

“When we heard about what happened to the little girl, I turned to my partner and I thought how easy it would have been to be us,” she said.

But the Airmaxx 360 was the one, as I wrote last week, that “makes you feel like you could be jettisoned at any moment”.

That wasn’t a criticism. It is part of the ride’s thrill.

As the tentacles of this mutant octopus of a sideshow throws you around, while raising you from low to high, you can’t help your legs from swinging out in front of you — or at least I couldn’t.

It seemed that my feet were getting awfully close to hitting the light posts around the edge of the ride that illuminate it at night.

That, I kept telling myself, was a completely irrational fear. There was probably a gap of metres but at such pace it felt like centimetres.

At least there is some brief respite as the ride slows to a halt, only to change its direction and fling you around backwards.

The teenage girls from Urrbrae who rated each ride said the Armaxx 360 was the most fun, but not too frightening.

On another ride, the comparatively tame Skyflyer, I sat next to an adolescent girl who told me she was terrified by all of them, but determined to be the kind of person who overcomes their fears and give things a go.

She repeatedly warned me that if any part of our carriage broke we were both going to die.

I laughed it off and told her the odds of anything untoward happening were one in a million.

Today, one poor girl is dead because she was that one.

Malaysian girl dies after being flung from ride in Adelaide

Australian authorities are investigating the death of a Malaysian girl who was flung “like a doll” from a spinning ride at the Royal Adelaide Show where showgoers laid flowers for her today.

The girl, 8, who was reportedly visiting Australia with her family, was thrown from the AirMaxx 360 ride yesterday, South Australian police said in a statement.

She was treated by paramedics and taken to an Adelaide hospital but died a short time later, police said.

Malinda Dunwoodie said she was near the ride when she saw the child “flying through the air”.

“She was hanging by her legs off the ride, trying to block herself,” Dunwoodie told Adelaide newspaper The Advertiser.

“She went flying through the air about 10 to 15 metres up in the air and I started sprinting towards her. I was shaking so much, she looked like a doll flying through the air.

“It was so shocking – it was like a horror movie. I didn’t see her land in the crowd but when I made it over to her I couldn’t see her eyes moving. Everyone was screaming.”

I do agree with all the ideas you have introduced for your post. They are really convincing and can certainly work. Still, the posts are very brief for newbies. May you please extend them a bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post. gckdgkbgdafb
