UNIT AMAL MALAYSIA, PAS
The unit, founded in 1991 under PAS Youth, has about 3,000 members aged above 18 who receive training from leaders within its own ranks, including teachers and ex-soldiers.
Those aged 13-17 may join the Amal Brigade, while those aged 7-12 can be members of the Amal Cadet group.
Despite the Unit Amal’s welfare activities, the spotlight often falls on them during public rallies.

Zahid had said “the same action” that was taken against the PPS members would also be taken by the police against the Unit Amal of PAS.

PAS: Court junked previous charge against Unit Amal for being unregistered
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 ― Putrajaya had tried unsuccessfully to prosecute PAS’s Unit Amal three years ago for not being registered with the Registrar of Societies, the Islamist party said today.
PAS Youth legal and human rights director Noorazmir Zakaria said the judiciary had then ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support the charge, amid a warning by the Home Ministry that the volunteer unit may again be targeted over the same issue.
“This case is not new and it’s already been decided by the court,” Noorazmir told a press conference here today at the PAS headquarters.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said yesterday that he was certain the police will crack down on the PAS charity unit as he considers the group’s status the same as the Penang volunteer patrol unit (PPS), which the police have declared illegal.
…
PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub, who was present at today’s press conference, pointed out that Unit Amal, which is registered under the Islamist party’s Youth wing, has been submitting annual reports to its parent since its inception in 1991, which PAS Youth then forwards to the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
He also said that PAS would not hesitate to sue the government if any of its 6,000 Unit Amal members are arrested.

PAS will defend Unit Amal, says Mat Sabu
GEORGE TOWN: PAS will defend its volunteer corps, Unit Amal, if it faces the same action as Penang’s Voluntary Patrol Team (PPS), according to its deputy president Mohamad Sabu.
Mohamad, popularly called Mat Sabu, said so far no action has been taken against Unit Amal and that the party only came to know about possible action against it via the media.
“We will defend Unit Amal (if the authorities take action). So far, nothing has happened, we are waiting,” he told reporters after attending a Penang PAS dinner here on Monday.

Hands off Unit Amal, PAS Youth chief tells minister
PAS wants Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to apologise for his remarks that the police are going to take action against the Islamist party’s voluntary corps, Unit Amal.
Its Youth chief Suhaizan Kayat (pic) said the group is a welfare body operating under the wing which is tasked to handle welfare and humanitarian aid, including floods and fire, to those in need.
“If demonstration is something that is allowed under the Constitution, then we are taking care of the welfare of those who want to demonstrate.
“We also ensure traffic control and security during PAS ceramah events,” he said when contacted today.
He demanded Zahid to tender an open apology for his remark towards the corps which had operated for the last 20 years.
“I don’t understand why the government wants to take action against us. In all these years, we have at times, worked with the police and government agencies, and now suddenly they want to find fault with us,” he added.
…
Meanwhile, Suhaizan said he would not hesitate to seek redress in court if Zahid and the police continued with their intention to launch a crackdown on Unit Amal.
“See you in court,” he added.

See you in court, PAS Youth tells home minister
PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat has vowed to take the matter in court if any action is taken against the PAS’ volunteer corps Unit Amal.
Suhaizan said this in response Home Minister Ahmad Zahidi who said earlier today that he was “sure” that the police would act against the Unit Amal.
…
This follows the detention of 156 Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS) members yesterday.
Asked by Malaysiakini what action would be taken against should the PAS Unit Amal members be detained, Suhaizan said: “We will meet them in court”.
Suhaizan had explained that the welfare unit was established under the PAS Youth, under the party’s list of activities.
“(As such), I cannot understand why action must be taken against Unit Amal,” he said.

Zahid: PAS’ Unit Amal to face action as well

A day after police arrested 156 members of the Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS), the home minister says he is “sure” police will act against the PAS volunteer corps Unit Amal too.
“The same action will be taken by the police. I am very sure they are going to take action,” Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told journalists in Kuala Lumpur today.
The minister said this when asked about the difference between the PPS and Unit Amal, which has operated for decades and facilitated in crowd control for opposition protests as well as PAS’ community events.
Ahmad Zahid defended the mass arrest on Merdeka day yesterday and blamed Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for it.
“Because Lim Guan Eng challenged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). He challenged the IGP to take action, so the IGP is taking action.
“Is the IGP wrong (for taking action)? When he is challenged by a leader from the state,” said Ahmad Zahid.
