Register all Facebook users, say dons – Bernama
The government should consider compelling all Facebook users in the country to register their accounts with the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Universiti Sains Malaysia Communication Studies Faculty senior lecturer Assoc Prof Mohamad Md Yusoff said the move was better compared with blocking access to the social network website to prevent abuse by users.
…
Universiti Malaysia Sabah Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage senior lecturer Saat Awang Damit said the registration of users with MCMC would also create a society of responsible Facebook users in the country.
…
Saat’s view was shared by his colleague, Dr Haryati Abdul Karim, who said that it was not right for the government to block access to Facebook just because of a few cases of abuse.
Haryati also proposed that a law similar to the Anti-Hate Speech Law be introduced to prevent hate speech or insult any race, religion, ethnicity and citizens.

DAP will stage protest against any attempted ban on Facebook
DAP will organise nationwide protests to oppose any attempts by Putrajaya to ban or close down popular social networking site Facebook, citing the right for freedom of expression and the federal government’s pledge of no Internet censorship.
Party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party will oppose any attempts to put in place such “primitive proposal”.
Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek yesterday said in a statement that the Barisan Nasional-led federal government will undertake a study following suggestions to ban Facebook.
Lim said any move to block Facebook violates Putrajaya’s guarantee of no internet censorship in Malaysia.

Experts: Blocking FB a bad idea and it’s dangerous
PETALING JAYA: Blocking Facebook is not only bad but also dangerous for Malaysia, say new media experts.
Facebook has become important for work and business, said David Lian, general manager of global social communications agency Zeno Malaysia.
…
Technopreneur Hardesh Singh said blocking Facebook would impact productivity.
“As we become more mobile in our work routine, we increasingly rely on social networks for our daily touchpoints,” he said.
“These include scheduling our daily routines, transacting in e-commerce and interfacing with employers and clients,” said the PopDigital founder.
Digital News Asia executive editor A. Asohan believed that cutting out Facebook would blunt Malaysia’s competitive edge.
“Many businesses — both local and multinationals — use Facebook, whether for corporate communications or to run marketing campaigns,” he said.
“It is integral to their business, and their operations.
“Technology start-ups that have been established in the last three or four years not only depend on Facebook for business, but their business is social media.”

Blocking Facebook a futile exercise, say advocates
PETALING JAYA: There is no point in blocking access to Facebook as users will find alternative to connect to the social media website or even use other platforms.
Social media advocate Niki Cheong believes that Facebook is not the cause of “abuse and seditious postings”.
“People are. Blocking Facebook won’t solve this problem because people will find different avenues instead – other social networks, blogs, websites and others.
“Now we have apps like Secret.ly which even allow you to post updates anonymously,” he said citing the case of China where its citizens found other platforms to connect online.
Existing laws and the proposed Harmony Bills can be used to tackle the cases of abuse and alleged sedition on social media websites, says National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) member Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.
…
Saifuddin, who stands firm against the blocking of Facebook in Malaysia even started a #jangantutupfb hashtag.
“Facebook, like many technologies, has its strengths and weaknesses but most users know how to use it with wisdom.”
Crucially, Facebook is already a way of life, he added.
“Some rely on it for work and business. It is a new platform for wider social and political participation and deliberation. Closing it will make the Government look very bad and archaic.”

SHUTTING DOWN FACEBOOK IN MALAYSIA?

There are 15million Malaysian accounts on Facebook but only 2,000 complaints of so-called abuse. What’s the percentage? 0.0001333%.
The problem of abuse is miniscule.
To even consider shutting down Facebook due to the 0.0001333% complaints is as ridiculously stupid as closing down a university of 10,000 when one student criticizes the government!

Should Facebook be closed, govt to study
The government will study whether it is necessary to close down Facebook following a case of abuse involving the social website, said Communication and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
He said his ministry was conducting studies to gather public views on the matter.
“If the people are of the opinion that Facebook should be closed, we are prepared to look into the matter but it is a radical approach,” he told reporters after closing Cheras Wanita Umno delegates meeting in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
…
Nonetheless, Ahmad Shabery, who is also an Umno supreme council member, said it would be quite impossible to close the social website as there are 15 million local accounts compared to only 2,000 reports of abuse received.
“Many business people are also using Facebook, others to forge family ties and have nothing to do with politics…and the complaints received were around 2,000 only. Should we completely close it down because of 2,000 reports? We need to relook at this,” he said.
