Traders displaced by ‘outsiders’

ALOR STAR: AFTER all the hue and cry, the Pantai Johor pasar malam traders have bowed to the Alor Star City Council’s (MBAS) decision to move them to the new market site in Jalan Suka Menanti, about 5km away from the present market.

However, the 200-odd traders claimed that they were surprised by the presence of “outsiders” at the new site, which resulted in a row between the traders and council officers.

Trader Azizan Sabu, 48, said he was shocked to learn that his plot had been taken by a “stranger”.

“We are obeying the council’s instruction to move to the new site but the council has let us down by allowing other traders to operate here.

“This is very disappointing as we have cooperated with the council and agreed to move,” he said.

Another trader Loh Hock Chye, 38, said the council had reneged on its promise to allot the traders ample space at the new site.

“I was told that the lot was registered in my name but when I arrived, I found my lot occupied by a stranger, someone who was not previously operating at the Pantai Johor pasar malam,” he said.

MBAS planning and corporate communication director Bohari Md Yusof responded by saying that enough lots had been provided for all the traders and that the issue of “outsiders” stemmed from those taking advantage of the situation.

“We did not allow the outsiders to operate at the new site, and our initial investigations reveal that some traders had taken the opportunity to bring their relatives to the new site to do business.

“The problem lies with the traders and we have done our best for them,” he said.

THE LIVELIHOOD OF PASAR MALAM TRADERS AT PANTAI JOHOR IN ALOR STAR IS THREATENED!

Bureaucrats and other civil servants, including those working for the Municipal or City Councils, have job security, regular salaries, bonuses and other perks.

They often forget that others, including traders at the night market, earn a daily income. Sometimes they know but they don’t care.

This is what has just happened at Pantai Johor, Alor Star! They closed the pasar malam there.

City mayor Datuk Mat Noh Ahamd said the market was ordered closed due to traffic congestion and parking problems as the the night market was not a properly designated area.

Night market traders barred from Pantai Johor

ALOR STAR: “They chased us out like cattle, this has been our rice bowl for the last 20 years. Where do you expect us to go?” complained Nonita Jaafar, 44, a night market trader at Pantai Johor.

Such was the fate of some 200 people from the night market when the Alor Star City Council ordered the traders to vacate the place without any prior notice.

Nonita, who sells murtabak at the site, said she was shocked at the actions of the authorities which did not show any compassion.

Nonita said she suffered losses amounting to RM1,000 from eviction as her overheads alone are close to RM500.

“The market has been here for more than 20 years and suddenly it is a big issue now.

“We respect the authorities’ order but they should respect us as well as we have made extensive preparation for trading here.

“Even if they relocate us to some new place, can they guarantee that our income will not be affected?” she asked.

Johari Salleh, 42, a fishmonger, said the authorities should do their job properly and make provision for the traders.

“I have lost about RM2,000 from the immediate closure as the merchandise such as fish, squids and prawns is perishable,” he said.
