Cadbury forced to explain why its chocolate is halal after being accused of ‘Muslim appeasement’
The chocolate maker spend the day fielding questions about its products from customers demanding to know whether it was Halal
Cadbury has been forced to respond to furious customers after an old picture surfaced online indicating that its chocolate Easter eggs in the UK are halal certified.
Customers anger was sparked after the picture, which appears to have been taken in 2014, of a Cadbury’s employee holding a certificate showing its products are halal-certified surfaced on social media with the caption: “Cadbury proudly displaying their latest new halal certificates, pass it on.”
As soon as the image was re-shared on Twitter some customers accused the brand of “Muslim appeasement” while other threatened to boycott it all together.
.
In a separate statement a spokesperson for Mondelez, which owns Cadbury, said: “In the UK our chocolate products are suitable for vegetarians and those following a halal diet, however they are not Halal certified. As our chocolate products do not contain meat, the ritual of halal does not apply and in the UK carry no halal certifications of any kind. The only animal related products we use in our British chocolate are milk and eggs. We take care to point out if and when our products are suitable for certain sections of society who take an interest in the ingredients and manufacturing process.
“Elsewhere in the world, we may label products with any number of certifications based on consumer interest and dietary requirements, and the best place for consumers to find that information is on the product label in that country. However, Cadbury welcomes consumers of all faiths and none.”
Under Sharia law, or Islamic law, products that contain pork are not considered halal, and so should not be consumed by Muslims.
The image appears to originate from the firm’s Asia-Pacific market.
In 2014, Islamic authorities in Malaysia confirmed Cadbury chocolate had been found not to contain pork DNA after concerns were raised about whether the company’s chocolate contained pig DN

Cadbury is halal
10 June 2014 @ 8:05 AM
PETALING JAYA: CADBURY Malaysia received its halal certification back yesterday after laboratory test results confirmed its chocolates are free from porcine DNA.
The certificates by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) affirmed that all Cadbury Malaysia products complied with Islamic Law and the Malaysian Halal Standard, which is approved by its halal certification panel.
Mondelez Malaysia managing director Sunil Sethi, the parent company of Cadbury Malaysia, said the certification was a testament to the fact that all their products could be consumed by Muslims.
“Jakim tested and re-tested our samples and confirmed that all our products are halal.
“We are confident that all regulations have been adhered to,” he told the New Straits Times yesterday.

Hidden agenda in Cadbury fiasco?
Muslim NGOs feel no remorse when it was found there was no porcine DNA in the samples of Cadbury chocolates tested the second time.
When the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom announced that two batches of Cadbury’s chocolates did not contain pig DNA, the reaction of the Muslim non-governmental organisations (NGOs) was most revealing.
Instead of relief, they refused to listen and said they would continue their boycott of Cadbury products.
They appeared to feel no remorse for their earlier action. They seemed to have forgotten the angry, hysterical scenes of a few days ago when they threatened to burn down a factory, demanded compensation and blood transfusions to “cleanse” their blood.
We may safely conclude, from their reaction, that this fiasco was a deliberate set-up, possibly for business or political gain. We can also conclude that the authorities’ delay in calming the situation was a contributory factor in making a mockery of Malaysia in international newspapers, yet again.
…
So what is the hidden agenda in the Cadbury fiasco?
…
Has the Cadbury allegation anything to do with a major American chocolate company which will soon operate in an industrial district in the south of the peninsula? This plant is estimated to cost several hundred million ringgit.
Is the Cadbury allegation linked with the push by extremist Muslims to “protect” Islam? Recently, the Muslim authorities and the extremist NGOs have “defended” Islam, by alleging chocolates with porcine DNA, by invading a wedding ceremony and by withholding a young child from his Hindu mother.
One cynic said: “This is Malaysia, where anything is possible. The Cadbury story was ‘leaked’ a week before the Teluk Intan by-election on May 31 and miraculously, we were told, the day after the election results were announced, that there is no pig DNA in the chocolates.”

JAKIM IS WILLING TO DEMONSTRATE THAT CADBURY CHOCS ARE HALAL BY EATING THEM IN PUBLIC BUT WON’T SAY WHEN!
Perhaps, they are waiting for Cadbury to supply chocs free for about 100 people? That’s not a problem for Cadbury. They could easily supply enough chocs for 5,000!

Jakim loathe to unwrap Cadbury demo details
Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) is refusing to divulge details of their plan to publicly eat Cadbury chocolates to demonstrate they are halal.
Jakim deputy director Razali Shahabuddin today tried to dodge the question of when this demonstration would be held, when met by Malaysiakini.
“I cannot answer, only the director can answer that question,” he said when met at launch of a motor convoy at the Federal Territories mosque this morning.

‘Cadbury jihad’ in Malaysia puts choc bars on pork test in S. Arabia
Published time: June 01, 2014 14:08

Unease has gripped Saudi Arabia as its Food and Drug Authority scrambles to test Cadbury’s chocolates for traces of pork DNA after two of the company’s products in Malaysia were found to violate the Islamic standard.
Pork is strictly prohibited in Islam, and Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of the religion, is a country with the strictest observance of Muslim practices, and deals with any transgressions in a severe fashion. So the scandal in Malaysia where chocolate bars, made by British confectioner Cadbury’s, tested as “not halal” is not a matter to take lightly for Riyadh or the 5,200,000 people living in the country.
The chocolates being tested were gathered at local markets and are currently undergoing close inspection, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority said in a statement published on its website.
The bars in question, however, do not come from Malaysia and were imported from other countries – mainly Egypt and the UK.

Cadbury boycott still on despite ‘halal’ find

The Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM), which has been at the forefront in protesting against Cadbury, says the consumers’ boycott will continue despite today’s anouncement the chocolate maker’s products are now found to be free from pig DNA.
It said that while it respects the announcement on the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia’s (Jakim) latest findings, the call for a boycott of all Cadbury products by PPIM and other NGOs was made based solely on the Health Ministry’s initial statement declaring the presence of porcine DNA in the food product.
“The consumer boycott will go on as long as the Health Ministry does not deny its previous statement where the ministry confirmed the existence of porcine DNA in Cadbury Daily Milk chocolate, with hazelnuts,” it said in a statement today.

Two samples of Cadbury chocolate that are said to have traces of pig (porcine) DNA have been taken from a factory here for tests, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom.
He said the samples were being examined by a laboratory in Petaling Jaya authorised by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) to issue halal certificates.

THE INDONESIANS ARE CONCERNED!

Now, Indonesia testing Cadbury products
Indonesia is also testing Cadbury chocolates to check if Islamic standards are followed.
KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesian authorities said today they were testing products made by British confectioner Cadbury to check if they complied with Islamic standards after two chocolate varieties in Malaysia were found to be contaminated with pork DNA.
The scandal over the non-halal ingredient has sparked outrage among Muslims here, who have called for a boycott on all products made by Cadbury and its parent Mondelez International Inc.
Concerns over halal food standards could jeopardise Mondelez’s sales in Muslim markets that are larger than Malaysia, such as Indonesia and the Middle East.
“After such an incident, it is prudent to do a test on the other variants to see if they also have traces of the pig DNA. We may have the result in a few days,” Roy Alexander Sparingga, head of Indonesia’s Food and Drug Monitoring Agency said.
Sparingga said the tests would be done on the 10 varieties of Cadbury products that were certified in Indonesia as halal – or permissible according to Islamic law.
Those products did not include the two types of Dairy Milk chocolate that Cadbury Malaysia recalled this week after finding pork traces.

Halal decision on tainted choc products maintained

The original decision on the Cadbury product which was confirmed as ‘halal’ before it was claimed to contain the pig DNA has been maintained and the product can be consumed by Muslims, according to the National Fatwa Council.
The chairperson of the Committee of the National Fatwa Council, Prof Emeritus Dr Abdul Shukor Husin said it was included in the category ‘Umum al-Balwa’, a rampant problem which was difficult to avoid.
“In the case of ready-made products that had been marketed to consumers and produced through processes using clean and halal ingredients and had been confirmed as ‘halal’, but later found it had been contaminated with pig DNA in certain batches only, then the committee had decided that it was categorised as ‘Umum al-Balwa’.
“The ruling on the product is referred to the original ruling, that is, halal for consumption because the contamination occurred beyond the scope of control and difficult to avoid,” he said in a statement today.

Corruption a bigger sin than consuming pork, former Perlis mufti tells Muslims
Former Perlis mufti saw some of the Muslims’ reaction as an overreaction and said that they should be more concerned with bigger crimes such as corruption. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, May 28, 2014.
Former Perlis mufti Datuk Dr Asri Zainul Abidin expressed disappointment with Muslims in the country who were more concerned over the consumption of pork, but kept silent over bigger crimes such as corruption.
He said it is as though the Muslim community does not realise the sin and harm in matters that are clearly illegal, such as interest-taking and corruption, both far greater sins compared to consuming pork.
“Unfortunately, we are not making enough noise over things that are clearly haram.
“This is the understanding of Islam, which only regards consuming pork as unlawful, but do not view gambling, interest-taking and corruption in the same way when clearly they are much bigger sins and cause greater harm,” he wrote on his Facebook page today.
He added that it was not a sin when followers of Islam accidentally consumed pork, and that Allah would not punish anyone if it was done unknowingly.
Asri was commenting on the pig DNA that was found in Cadbury chocolates and lashed out at the reaction of some quarters, which he deemed as an overreaction.

Muslim groups declare ‘jihad’ on Cadbury, claim wider agenda to weaken faith
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 ― More than 20 Malay-Muslim groups have called for a nationwide boycott on all Cadbury products, saying that a holy war needs to be waged against the confectionary giant for attempting to “weaken” Muslims in Malaysia.
At a news conference, the groups which include the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM), Perkasa, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Darul Islah Malaysia (Perkid), Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) and the Halal Muslim Entrepreneurs’ Association (Puhm) claimed that Cadbury had “crossed the line” by selling its porcine-tainted chocolates, and that swift action was needed.
“They have betrayed us Muslims by putting ‘haram’ elements through the foods we consume in our body, to weaken us Muslims.
“That is why Muslims are weak, divided,” Perkasa Selangor chief Abu Bakar Yahya told reporters.
Perkid president Ustaz Masridzi Sat said most social ills and apostasy cases in the country involving Muslims stemmed from them consuming food which was not halal.
“Because the person eats pork it is difficult to guide him to the right path. When the day of judgment comes, that person will be wearing a pig-face because of what he has eaten,” he said.

PPIM president Datuk Nadzim Johan said that they have begun discussing matters with Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) and other Malay NGOs on possible legal action.

The Muslim groups also said today they will be lodging a police report against Cadbury “soon”, and called on all Muslims nationwide to unite in efforts to shut down the company’s operations in Malaysia.
“Let their (Cadbury’s) products go to waste, let them not be bought, let them die out,” Nadzim said.
