THE CHALLENGE FOR THE PROTON IRIZ
For economies of scale, at least 150,000 of the Proton Iriz must be produced yearly. That is the magic number of buyers it requires: 150,000.

To achieve that figure, it has two obstacles. Firstly, it must regain the confidence of the Malaysian car buyer. Secondly, it has to take market share from the Perodua Myvi.

The Iriz has made a good start: 17,000 bookings. However, RHB Research says that not all of those bookings will actually translate into actual vehicle deliveries because of  the high 60% financing rejection rate for the purchase of cars in this category.

Perodua Axia or PCC?

image

As you may have heard, the Perodua Axia has finally made it onto showroom floors with prices ranging from RM24,600.00 for the base model all the way up to RM42,530.00 for the highest spec one. This means, there is an Axia for everyone. It’s an impressive bit of kit to say the least but with the launch of the PCC looming ever closer begs the question – should you splash the cash for a Axia now or wait till Proton’s Compact Car is launched on 25th September?

*The all-important question, and for me, the only question, is, “HOW MUCH IS THE PROTON COMPACT CAR?

WAS SOMEONE LYING OR WAS IT A CASE OF THE CEO KNOWING TOO LITTLE ABOUT HIS OWN PRODUCTS?

Proton Holdings Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah has been quoted as having said that the PCC is not an A-segment car, not 1.5 litre engine and below. (The Star, Proton compact to be ‘game changer’)

However, consider the latest report.

When launched, the PCC will be offered with a choice of two engines, which are a newly developed 1.6-litre VVT unit and a 1.3-litre VVT one that is said to be a reworked version of the current 1.3-litre CamPro engine.

Proton’s new compact car (PCC)

Not to be outdone by Perodua, Proton has released exterior images of its upcoming global small car, which should break cover next month.

While a lot of attention is focussed on Perodua’s all-new model, the Axia, which will be launched in the near future, Proton too has been teasing the public with its upcoming hatchback that it calls the Proton Compact Car (PCC) and which is widely rumoured to have the name of ‘Iriz’. Like Perodua, Proton’s teasers have not revealed the complete shape of the model, instead highlighting some of the features that will come with it.

Recent information suggests that it will have a 1.3-litre engine with possibly a turbocharged variant for extra performance, and almost certainly, the gearbox will be a CVT which is the best choice for this class of cars. Though an AMT (like that used in the Savvy) is a low-cost option, it has never been liked by motorists due to its unusual operation and Proton already has experience with CVTs in the Saga.

With its indirect support from the government, Proton would be able to price the new model lower than what other carmakers would have to charge for a car in this class. However, its Chairman has hinted that Malaysians should no longer expect to pay low prices for Proton products in future. “Now Proton wants to produce cars that are of world standard, but you have to pay a higher price. You can’t have a good car and pay a ‘bad’ car price,” said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad last month.
