我国错过汤杯,但依然有不少的收获,特别是男双组合吴伟申/陈炜强和云天豪/陈文宏,以及男单张维峰在本届汤杯有出色的表现。这让大马汤杯队在未来看到希望。

Astro relents position over Thomas Cup final, will allow RTM broadcast rights

May 24, 2014
Latest Update: May 24, 2014 09:24 pm

Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) will be showing the live telecast of the Thomas Cup finals after all.

In the latest development to the saga over broadcast rights for the premier badminton competition, Astro has finally relented and agreed to allow RTM to air the live telecast of Malaysia’s first participation in a Thomas Cup final in 12 years.

Earlier today, Astro had defended its position as the exclusive broadcaster for the Thomas Cup following Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s appeal for the pay TV station to allow RTM to carry live the Thomas Cup final between Malaysia and Japan tomorrow.

In a statement, Astro, as the official broadcaster for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup in Malaysia, said that the cost of sport rights globally are increasing.

“In the case of the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, the rates are set by a professional rights holder representing the Badminton World Federation (BWF), that is IMG.

“Like other broadcasters, Astro, appreciating the importance of badminton to Malaysians, paid the pre-determined commercial rates for the broadcast rights.

However, it added that the amount it paid will differ from the broadcast rights offer to RTM by IMG, because RTM are a free-to-air broadcaster.

Hence, allowing RTM the right to use its broadcast at this juncture could breach its own terms set by IMG for the broadcast of the Thomas Cup Final, the company said.

Khairy pleads for Astro to release broadcast rights for Thomas Cup

PETALING JAYA: Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin took to social media to make an open appeal to Astro to release its broadcast rights for the Thomas Cup finals to Radio Television Malaysia (RTM).

“As sports minister, I want to make an open appeal to Astro on behalf of all sports lovers in Malaysia for a reduced or free broadcast rights for the people of Malaysia through RTM,” said Khairy on his Facebook page on Saturday.

“It is not often Malaysia makes it to the Thomas Cup final, the last time we were in the finals was 12 years ago. And the last time we won was 22 years ago,” he said.

Khairy said that he understands that RTM doesn’t have the budget to pay for Astro’s broadcast rights for the Thomas Cup finals, which is reported to cost RM4mil, because much of the broadcast budget was spent on the upcoming World Cup.

Khairy also urged for his social media followers to share his open appeal to Astro on their respective social media platforms in attempt to convince Astro to wave the RM4mil fee for their broadcast rights for the Thomas Cup finals tomorrow.

“Please let the Thomas Cup finals tomorrow be broadcast to the people for free,” he said.

NEW DELHI: Malaysia booked their place in the last four of the Thomas Cup Finals for the first time since 2010 after beating a fighting Denmark 3-1 at Siri Fort Indoor Stadium here.

But it could turn out to be a costly victory as Lee Chong Wei’s fitness is in question after he slipped in his opening singles match against his world number three rival Jan Jorgensen.

Chong Wei slipped at 16-all in the rubber game against Jorgensen.

The incident brought flashbacks of what happened to him at his last Thomas Cup campaign in Wuhan two years ago when he suffered a right ankle injury during his opening match against Peter-Gade Christensen.

Chong Wei had to retire and it cost Malaysia a chance of topping the group. They were drawn against China in the quarter-finals and eventually fell 0-3 to exit the tournament.
