ANYONE WITH A KEYLESS CAR? When the idea was made a reality, this is what was written back in 2008.
Going Keyless
Will Your Next Car Have Keyless Start?
Safe and Sound
These systems are designed to deter theft and break-ins. The absence of a metal key makes life a lot harder for car thieves. Offers Ryder: “[Mercedes-Benz has] the industry’s first fully electronic ignition key system, [and] there is no metal key that could be illegally copied [copies can only be made at an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership]. It’s nearly impossible to unlock the steering column or start the engine without the owner’s remote unit.”
And the engine won’t respond to a signal from just any old key fob. Dave Buchko, BMW product communications manager, explains: “Each key contains a chip with an ID code that the car must recognize. In addition, there is a random code that each key receives when the engine is shut off. The vehicle will read and match both codes. If the car cannot match the ID code to the last random code sent to the key in question, it won’t start.”

HOWEVER, CARS WITH KEYLESS SECURITY SYSTEMS ARE INCREASINGLY AT RISK FROM CAR THIEVES!
Criminals have been buying equipment online that is able to re-programme keys.
Cars with keyless security systems increasingly targeted by thieves: Report http://shar.es/10v35g
Cars with keyless security systems are increasingly becoming the targets of crime, a report said.
A British motoring industry group, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, has warned that thieves are able to bypass security using equipment intended only for mechanics, BBC reported.
The warnings echoed those made by the US National Insurance Crime Bureau, which earlier this year said it had seen a “spike” in car thefts involving equipment to spoof keyless entry, the report said.
According to BBC, keyless entry and ignition typically works by the driver keeping a fob on their person which automatically opens the car and activates it so it can be driven.
As the popularity of keyless systems has increased, criminals have been buying equipment online that is able to re-programme keys, the report said.

THE POWER WINDOWS OF BOTH MY PROTON CARS BREAK DOWN EASILY.
HOWEVER, I HAD NEVER HEARD OF POWER WINDOWS CATCHING FIRE UNTIL NOW!
GM is telling customers to park the SUVs outdoors until they are repaired because they could catch fire when left unattended.
YAHOO! NEWS MALAYSIA
General Motors’ troubles with safety recalls has surfaced in another case, this time with the company recalling a group of SUVs for a third time to fix power window switches that can catch fire.
The problem, revealed in documents posted by federal safety regulators this week, is so serious that GM is telling customers to park the SUVs outdoors until they are repaired because they could catch fire when left unattended.
The vehicles will be left outside for a while. Parts won’t be ready until October at the earliest, according to GM. The automaker also has ordered its dealers to stop selling the SUVs as used cars until they are fixed.
The recall covers about 189,000 vehicles in North America, mainly from the 2006 and 2007 model years. Models affected include the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 97-X. The recall was one of six announced by GM on June 30 that covered 7.6 million vehicles.
…
The SUV problem first appeared early in 2012 when NHTSA began investigating consumer complaints of fires in the driver’s-door switches that control power windows.
At first, GM tried to address the issue with a “service campaign,” where it sent letters to owners telling them that water can find its way into the switches, causing rust that can result in short circuits, overheating and possibly fires. The campaign, which wasn’t a recall, extended the warranty and offered service only to vehicles that exhibited the problems. It was limited to 20 states and Washington, D.C., where salt is used to clear roads in the winter.
But in August of 2012, under government pressure, GM recalled 278,000 of the SUVs in the cold-weather states and offered extended warranties to the rest of the country. NHTSA kept investigating, and 10 months later, GM expanded the recall nationwide.
By then, NHTSA and GM had received 242 complaints, including 28 about fires. There were no injuries.

Nissan Gets Into The Recall Game: Recalls over 200k Cars for Faulty Airbags
Published July 27, 2014
NEW YORK – Nissan is recalling more than 226,000 additional vehicles over a defective air bag that has affected much of the global auto industry.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Saturday that Nissan North America Inc. is recalling certain lines of its Infiniti, Maxima, Pathfinder and Sentra cars for the model years 2002 to 2004.
Faulty air bags have already been blamed for the recall of millions of cars around the world in recent years, including those made by BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda and Toyota.
The air bag systems were made by Takata Corp., a Tokyo-based supplier of car parts. The problem is that the air bag inflators can rupture, causing metal fragments to fly out when the air bags are deployed in crashes. That can potentially cause serious injury to passengers.

HONDA MALAYSIA
Local Update: Honda Malaysia said today four models sold in Malaysia are affected by the recall.
They are the 2003 City, 2001-2003 Stream, 2002-2003 Jazz and 2003 Accord.
Only passenger airbags in these models are affected, according to Honda Malaysia.
“To date, there has been no accident related to this recall….We will be contacting the affected customers individually,” said Honda Malaysia marketing chief Akkbar Danial. For any queries, call Honda customer service at 1800 88 2020.

In the wider action, Honda said it was recalling about 2.03 million vehicles globally over potentially flawed Takata air bag inflators made in 2000-02 with a risk of exploding and shooting out shrapnel at drivers and passengers, expanding a recall from April 2013. It cited how explosive material used to inflate Takata passenger-side air bags had been handled and processed in 2000-02 at plants in the United States and Mexico.

Honda, Mazda, Nissan issue recalls over airbags
23 June 2014 @ 5:50 PM
TOKYO : Honda, Mazda and Nissan are recalling millions of vehicles globally for defective airbags manufactured by supplier Takata Corp. that could possibly explode.
No accidents have been reported related to Monday’s recalls.
Honda Motor Co. recalled 2.03 million vehicles for the airbag problem, including 1.02 million in North America and nearly 669,000 in Japan. It said they were manufactured between 2000 and 2005.
That came on top of a million vehicles Honda recalled last year for similar Takata airbag problems.
Nissan Motor Co. recalled 755,000 vehicles globally manufactured from 2001 through 2003, while Mazda Motor Corp. recalled nearly 160,000 vehicles manufactured from 2002 through 2004.
Like Honda, both companies announced recalls last year, but in smaller numbers.
Takata recently realized that the earlier recall had not included all of the problem airbags, the automakers said.

The callback comes after Toyota in April recalled 6.39 million vehicles globally over a string of problems, dealing another blow to the firm, whose reputation for quality and safety has been dented in recent years.
Despite record sales and bumper profits, Toyota has been fighting to protect its brand after earlier recalls involving millions of vehicles.

Toyota recalls 2.27 million vehicles globally over airbag defect
TOKYO: Toyota on Wednesday said it was recalling 2.27 million vehicles globally over an airbag system defect that could cause a fire, the latest in a series of callbacks by the world’s biggest automaker.
The company, which has now recalled about nine million vehicles in the past two months, said the announcement covered about 20 models, including its Corolla sedan and Yaris subcompact.
The fire risk from the defect covers about 1.62 million cars abroad and 650,000 in Japan, Toyota said.
“There is a risk that the airbag container could break down and scatter around, which could cause fire or injuries,” the carmaker said in a statement submitted to Japan’s transport ministry on Wednesday.
It did not elaborate on details of the potential fire hazard, but a company spokesman in Tokyo said the automaker had received a complaint from a Japanese customer who said his passenger seat was burned due to the glitch.
The spokesman added that no serious injuries or accidents linked to the defect had been reported.

As lawmakers press General Motors and regulators over their decade-long failure to correct a defective ignition switch, a new review of federal crash data shows that 303 people died after the air bags failed to deploy on two of the models that were recalled last month.
The review of the air bag failures from 2003 to 2012, by the Friedman Research Corporation, adds to the mounting reports of problems that went unheeded before General Motors announced last month that it was recalling more than 1.6 million cars worldwide because of the defective switch. G.M. has linked 12 deaths to the faulty switch in the two models analyzed, the 2005-7 Chevrolet Cobalts and 2003-7 Saturn Ions, as well as four other models.
The review by Friedman Research, a company that analyzes vehicle safety data, looked at cases in which the air bags failed to deploy, but it did not try to evaluate what caused the crashes.

GM to pay $35mil US fine for delayed response to faulty ignitions
WASHINGTON: General Motors Co was slapped on Friday with a US$35 million U.S. fine for its delayed response to an ignition switch defect in millions of vehicles, as federal regulators accused a long line of company officials of concealing a problem that is linked to at least 13 deaths.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced the fine, which is the maximum the agency can impose. Other investigations into the automaker’s handling of the recall are being conducted by the federal government and could come with more severe punishments.
It was unclear how those additional probes might be influenced by Friday’s actions by the Obama administration, especially after Foxx declared: “What GM did was break the law … They failed to meet their public safety obligations.”
The ignition-switch defect was originally noticed by the largest U.S. automaker more than a decade ago. But the first recalls began only in February of this year, despite years of consumer complaints.
Furthermore, the acting chief of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), David Friedman, told reporters that GM employees ranging from engineers “all the way up through executives” were aware of the information years before the recall of 2.6 million vehicles.

Air Bag Safety – The Police Notebook
Air bags save lives.
They work best when everyone is buckled and children are properly restrained in the back seat. Children riding in the front seat can be seriously injured or killed when an air bag comes out in a crash.
An air bag is not a soft, billowy pillow. To do its important job, an air bag comes out of the dashboard at up to 200 miles per hour — faster than the blink of an eye. The force of an air bag can hurt those who are too close to it.
Drivers can prevent air bag-related injuries to adults and children by following the critical safety points:

Car Seat Safety for Kids
About Air Bags
Front air bags are located in the steering wheel to protect the driver, and in the dashboard of most cars to protect passengers. Front air bags are not designed to protect vehicle occupants in side and rear impact or rollover collisions. Because air bags (and seat belts) were designed to protect average-sized adult males and NOT children, they can be extremely dangerous to infants or young children seated in front of them.

How Airbags Work
Imagine you’re in your car driving home. The weather isn’t particularly bad, the road conditions are fine, and you’re singing along with the radio. Then out of nowhere, a car makes an illegal turn, winds up in front of you, and you don’t have time to stop. You hear the screech of metal as your car collides with the other, and brace yourself to go flying through the windshield. Instead, you are pushed backward into your seat, held there for a split second, and then the pressure subsides. Your seatbelt was the first line of defense but you are upright in the driver’s seat because your car is equipped with a vehicle airbag.

SUPPOSE YOUR CAR IGNITION STOPPED WORKING WHILE YOU WERE DRIVING?

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN HIS CAR IGNITION SYSTEM FAILED AT THE GUA TEMPURUNG STRETCH, NORTH-SOUTH PLUS HIGHWAY!
One day, a good friend was driving to KL from Ipoh on the North-South PLUS Highway.
As he was going on the Gua Tempurung stretch, that infamous part of the highway where many accidents have occurred, his engine stopped completely. He had no power steering and could barely steer the car. He was going downhill, so the car was moving quickly. He stepped on the brakes and luckily, they worked, so he slowed down and eventually brought his car to a stop at the side of the road.
He tried starting the car. The engine burst into life!
Thank God, he said, that he survived the incident.
