THE PAINTING WAS NOT STOLEN BUT REMOVED BY THE JOHOR BARU CITY COUNCIL!

MBJB removes Karpal’s portrait, cites ‘sensitivity’

What was thought to have been a case of a stolen portrait of the late ‘Tiger of Jelutong’ Karpal Singh was proven untrue when Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) admitted it was removed due to its ‘sensitive’ nature.

The portrait of the late Bukit Gelugor MP, who passed away in an accident on April 17, was among the 33 art pieces on display at the Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk cultural event in Johor baru when it suddenly went missing.

At a Johor Baru press conference yesterday called by DAP representatives, MBJB was taken to task for its arbitrary removal of the portrait, reported the Oriental Daily News today.

DAP Senai state assemblyperson Wong Shu Qi said they first thought that the painting was ‘taken away’ by some party supporters but later found out the culprit was none other than MBJB.

“Would showing the portrait of a dead person amount to inciting public disorder? Or is Umno fearful of a dead person?” she said at the press conference, in questioning MBJB true intention in confiscating the late veteran opposition’s picture.

She urged MBJB to return painting to the exhibition adding that the council’s action amounted to theaft besides being a violation of the spirit of freedom of expression as enshrined in the federal constitution.

Oriental Daily News quoted MBJB as saying Karpal’s portrait was removed because of ‘public complaints’.

Council enforcement unit director Mohd Khairul Anuar Esa said the painting was removed from the exhibition site and was now being kept in a council store room.

He alleged that members of the public had complained that Karpal Singh was not a Johor-based politician and his portrait’s display could trigger sensitive political issues if it continued to be exhibited in the state.

KARPAL SINGH

The Tiger of Jelutong is a nickname the veteran politician gained during his years as a vociferous Member of Parliament (MP) for Jelutong, a Penang seat he held on for two decades. Interestingly, the intimidating moniker stuck even after the DAP stalwart was defeated in Jelutong in 1999. Today, Karpal is the MP for Bukit Gelugor.

mp speaks mpspeaks karpal singhDr Mahathir Mohamad has challenged me to prove that he has made seditious comments against the royalty during the Parliamentary debates leading up to the 1993 constitutional amendments on the monarchs’ immunity.

………..

In tabling the Constitutional (Amendment) Bill, 1993 to set up the Special Court to take away the immunity from legal process of the King and the Rulers, Mahathir, uttered the following, among the many other, seditious remarks during a time when he had no Parliamentary immunity from being charged in court for making those remarks:

Ordered to kick him out but the police ended up SALUTING KARPAL

KUALA LUMPUR – One of the country’s former top cops was asked to kick the late Karpal Singh out of the Penang State Assembly after he was suspended in 1981. He ended up walking arm-in-arm with Karpal out of the building past a large number of policemen in riot gear. The policemen saluted the lawyer.

Tan Sri Zaman Khan, the then state police chief, remembers that day with fondness.

Karpal was suspended from attending the state assembly in December 1981 but decided to gatecrash it anyway.
