WHY DID THEY PICK CHEW MEI FUN?
For two obvious reasons
1. She is Chinese.
2. She is a woman.
There is a 3rd reason, and that is revealed by DPM Muhyiddin:
3. She is not too bad-looking (boleh tahan cantik).

WHAT ARE THEY ASKING CHEW MEI FUN IN KAJANG?
1 “Why did you support the closure of the demolition and relocation of SJK(c) Damansara, a Chinese primary school in one of Petaling Jaya’s oldest Chinese villages, in 2001?”
2 When you are ADUN in Kajang, will you again support the closure of Chinese schools?”

DAP uses 13-year-old school controversy to haunt MCA in Kajang
BY SHERIDAN MAHAVERA
March 16, 2014
DAP leaders hold a banner with a slogan of their latest campaign against MCA in Kajang. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 16, 2014.
A controversy 13 years ago is being revived in Pakatan Rakyat’s campaign against Barisan Nasional in the Kajang by-election.
The DAP is claiming that BN’s candidate Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun and the MCA had supported the demolition and relocation of SJK(c) Damansara, a Chinese primary school in one of Petaling Jaya’s oldest Chinese villages, in 2001.
A residents’ protest movement called SOS SJKC Damansara had then attracted wide support from the Chinese community.
According to reports, mostly in the Chinese press, Chew has been dogged with questions regarding her stand in the controversy ever since she began campaigning in the by-election.
Government funding for Chinese education is close to the heart of the Chinese community. The belief that the BN was no longer interested in this was one reason the coalition lost support from the Chinese voters who had stood by them after five decades.
As such, the issue could have a deep impact on the BN’s efforts to court support from Kajang’s Chinese voters, who make up 40% of this urban constituency.
…
“Chew must explain why she supported this move. In Kajang, people are asking why did you support the closure of the school?
“People are worried that when she becomes Adun (state assemblyperson) she will also support the closure of Chinese schools in Kajang”, said Ean Yong.
Kajang has two Chinese primary schools.
Ean Yong became a part time teacher to some of the students of SJK(c) Damansara after their families chose not to move them to the new school, which is about four kilometres away in Bandar Utama.
He said the school’s original buildings had not been demolished. In 2009, the government re-opened a new school on the same site and renamed it SJK(c) Chong Hwa.
…
To focus residents’ attention to Chew’s involvement in the issue, the DAP has started a campaign called “Say No to 2nd SOS in Kajang”.
However, MCA deputy president, Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, refuted the DAP’s claims and its attempt to use SJK(c) Damansara as campaign weapon.
“There is actually no issue. The government relocated the school to a new site. There was no demolition. So what is the issue now?”
Wee, a former deputy education minister, said it was Chew and him who convinced Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, the education minister at that time, to re-open the school after it was closed for eight years.
“Datin Paduka Chew and me were involved and we did not ask for any recognition. And it just shows how low the opposition has stooped to use this issue.

Wee explains Chew’s sharing stage with Perkasa leader
BY MUZLIZA MUSTAFA
March 06, 2014
MCA deputy president Dr Wee Ka Siong said that just because party vice-president Chew Mei Fun shared a stage with Perkasa Negri Sembilan chief Ruslan Kassim at an event last week, it does not mean MCA shared the Malay rights group’s cause.
“It was someone else’s event. We could not do anything. Ruslan came in his personal capacity. Others saw him as Perkasa, we recognise him as a founder of Parti Keadilan Rakyat,” Wee said after the party’s presidential council meeting today.
“Roslan wears ‘many hats’. We know that,” said Wee without explaining further.
Chew, the Barisan Nasional candidate in the Kajang by-election, was seen on the same stage with Ruslan Kassim at a national economic briefing session organised by Umno at Teratak Pekembar in Cheras, on February 28, reported by pro-Pakatan Rakyat bloggers.
According to MalaysiaKini, blogger Omakkau posted the incident in a blog.
The blogger said both Chew and Ruslan spoke on the same stage.
A photo found on Chew’s official Facebook fan page, also showed her with Ruslan.
MCA and Perkasa do not get along as MCA has always labelled the Malay rights group as “extremist”.
Perkasa had previously lambasted MCA over the Chin Peng issue.
Perkasa warned the MCA not to upset Malays by insisting that Putrajaya allow Chin Peng’s ashes be brought back here.

Chew: BN against ‘candy culture’
Selective funding during elections is not in line with the coalition’s policy, says the MCA vice-president and Kajang state seat candidate.
PETALING JAYA: Chew Mei Fun, the MCA candidate for the Kajang by-election, said Zahid Hamidi’s views on development funding goes against the original objective of Barisan Nasional (BN).
Yesterday, the Umno vice president, said that the Kajang by-election should not be an avenue for BN to pour in allocations and that it should only be channelled if the voters gave their mandate to the BN candidate.
“I think in the run-up to the Kajang by-election, there should be no development allocations given out, even for drains… but if we win, then only we give,” said Zahid after launching the Umno People’s Carnival organised by the party’s Masjid Tanah division, in Alor Gajah.
Chew however said BN’s policy in giving out funding is based on the needs of the people as well as taking into consideration local development plans and not just selectively during the general election or by-election campaigns.
“The home ministry’s statement that BN should refuse ‘candy culture’ actually means that BN will not purposely choose to give allocations during the general or by-election campaigns. This is also the BN consensus,” she added.

Caricatures of Chew widely spread online

A week after MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun being named as the BN candidate for the Kajang by-election, a number of caricatures are being widely circulated online, projecting a fresh and lively image of the usually-serious politician.
Although Chew claimed that the identities of the designers behind such eye-catching caricatures remain a mystery, she had subsequently picked one of them to change her profile picture on her by-election Facebook page.
Chew said that the caricatures were not the work of the MCA election team, and that she found out after they were posted on Facebook, which went viral as shared by netizens then.
“I have no idea who they (designers) are… just think that they had put in effort and I appreciate it,” she told Malaysiakini.
However, netizens from the opposite side have taken advantage of the caricatures to mock Chew through modifications.
Among the taunting effors was the addition of Chinese words on the modified caricatures to poke fun at Chew’s full name, which sounds close to ‘Chou Mai Fun’ (fried mihun in Cantonese).

There is a 3rd reason, and that is revealed by DPM Muhyiddin:
3. She is not too bad-looking (boleh tahan cantik).
The DPM’s statement is also an insult to the voters intelligence, insinuating that a candidate’s ‘looks’ is what the rakyat gives priority to.
…
Unwittingly, Muhyiddin has opened a Pandora’s Box, revealing the gender inequality that has long been plaguing the women of this nation.

Muhyiddin’s ‘boleh tahan cantik’ remarks sexist
Muhyiddin’s ‘justification’ for fielding Chew in Kajang signals that Umno is indifferent to gender sensitization, and that the BN government does not treat gender issues with respect.
By Jeswan Kaur
What does ‘looks’ have to do with serving the rakyat? Plenty, as far as deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin is concerned, given his endorsement of MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun as Barisan Nasional’s candidate in the March 23 Kajang by-election.
The DPM on Friday was quoted as saying Chew’s good looks were a ‘bonus’ to ensure ruling coalition BN’s victory in the by-election which sees Chew, a former senator, taking on opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
Muhyiddin used the phrase “boleh tahan cantik” or “not too bad looking” to describe Chew’s looks, adding that besides her experience working with BN, she was ‘not too bad looking”.
Is that how BN is planning to overthrow Anwar in Kajang, by fielding a ‘not too bad looking” female candidate to excite the voters?
Whatever happened to Chew’s ‘looks’ when she suffered defeat in the 2008 general election, losing to DAP’s Tony Pua?
Muhyiddin’s remark about Chew’s looks is nowhere being a compliment. It is sexism at work, discrimination and even uncalled for sexual harassment.
