SINGAPORE: The Honda Civic driver caught on video driving in an aggressive manner has been fined S$5,400 and disqualified from holding a driving licence for two years.

Another charge of rash driving was taken into consideration.

Undergraduate Quek Zhen Hao, 25, was arrested after two video clips which showed him tailgating, overtaking and braking dangerously in his car were circulated widely online.

Singapore’s Honda Civic ‘road bully’ charged for rash driving

The Honda Civic driver seen driving aggressively in two viral videos and labelled by online citizens as a “road bully” was charged in court on Wednesday.

Quek Zhen Hao, 25, was charged for two counts of driving in a rash manner and one count of displaying threatening behaviour towards Goh Stok Ling.

The plump driver, dressed in purple and grey checkered shirt in court, had allegedly cut into Goh’s path on 28 January before applying his brakes on three occasions, causing the lady driver to brake hard so as to avoid collision. This incident took place at about 9:10am along Petir Road and Dairy Farm Road.

A similar incident happened a day later at about 12:54pm along Choa Chu Kang Drive. Quek had allegedly tailgated Chng Sor Hoon before cutting into the path without signaling.

Subsequently, Quek had applied his brakes, causing Chng to apply hard braking in order to avoid a collision.

Two recent cases have exposed the ugly side of Singapore netizens in the way they have pursued and attacked individuals they decided deserved to be punished.

Mr Quek’s mother pleaded for the online storm to die down and for netizens to leave her son alone.

She said in a mix of English and Mandarin: “He’s a nobody, not someone famous. Why would people do this to him?

“Many Singaporean drivers also have a foul temper. So why target just him?”

Mrs Quek,It doesn’t take a famous person to be targeted. His actions speak for themselves. Yes, many Singaporean drivers have really bad driving etiquette and your son is one of them. Difference between him and the other rude drivers is that he’s being caught on camera and there is evidence against him. If the others were caught the same way, netizens will respond the same way.Parents need to learn to not defend their children and guide them instead. It doesn’t take one to have children to think with common sense or make sensible judgement. If your child is wrong, he/she is wrong. There’s no point defending them especially with evidence like this. If you’re scared to “lose face”, then ensure your child knows how to behave. Face value plays very little part when someone gets hurt. When that happens, then what? Blame on the injured even if your son was in the wrong?

Mrs. Quek,I have 3 very important points to you and your family, so please read:1) Perhaps you should first question what kind of person your son is to behave in this manner. He is not venting his frustration or being angry. Being angry is about shouting, or perhaps showing a finger out of his window. The way he behaved endangered someone’s life. Twice.2) Next, you should question what kind of parenting led a kid to grow up this way? If you had raised him in being a properly mannered human being, he should have known such behavior is not acceptable in any civilized society.3) Thirdly, you should question what sort of parent you are. With his unacceptable behavior, instead of saying “I am terribly sorry for my son’s unruly actions”, you are telling people to let it go without any apology or attempt to show remorse?Many people in Singapore, or in fact in the world has a bad temper, yes. And that is why many paid for it too.You son is lucky, to be in Singapore, where crime rate is low. And that he had met a more civilized person who did nothing except posting his actions on the net. If he were to met someone else, you might not be petitioning the paper to leave him alone, but instead, begging the papers to find out who murder or seriously maimed him.And in case you or your son read my comments, let me tell you upfront, that if I had been the driver, you would have had to pick him up from the hospital. And I mean it.
