Was blackout in Sabah another security breach?

Luke Rintod | January 19, 2014

With so few good roads connecting towns in Sabah, it would not take a military strategist to observe that it would be easy to seed security movements in Sabah.

aa

KOTA KINABALU : If there is any security audit on Sabah, any at all, then the state would have failed miserably on all fronts.

Friday’s electricity blackout in the whole Sabah showed the state is most vulnerable to a single act of sabotage by enemies.

And Sabah has scores of ‘other enemies’ and security concerns are inherent with the presence of a large population of illegal immigrants from the Philippines and Indonesia.

Sabah’s international borders were easily breached by pirates, terrorists and even smugglers, human smuggling included.

There are proven records of such infiltration and as always the ruling party blames the state’s long porous coastline for such insidious entries.

But Friday’s blackout stands as a good example of how the Federal Government and State Government failed – security in the state is being severely compromised.

Only days ago, an early-morning shooting spree using “senapang guli” or “marble shotgun” went on for hours targeting glass windows of banks and shops in various areas in the state capital.

This has rattled the peaceful minds of Sabahans.

Public apprehension

A quick verbal assurance by the police that this act were the work of some naughty kids did not go down well with local leaders and it certainly did not assure Sabahans.

Group: Stop giving excuses over outages

KOTA KINABALU: The business community wants Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd to stop giving excuses over the recurrent power disruption problems in the state.

Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Datuk Michael Lui said blackouts were occurring too often, causing millions in losses.

“This sudden power failure throughout the state is outrageous. Disruptions are rampant in Sabah but to have the whole state grind to a halt by an outage is shocking,” he said.

He said too many excuses have been given for the disruptions, including technical problems, trees falling on cables, substation breakdowns and contractors snapping underground cables.

“This is happening once too often. Everyone is affected. Industries, traders and even banks end up slowing down or stopping transactions,” he added.

KOTA KINABALU: A massive power blackout crippled most parts of Sabah and Labuan FT, leaving over 500,000 consumers without electricity from 11.05am.

The simultaneous tripping along Sabah’s east-west transmission grid disrupted many government counter services while hospitals had to scrap elective surgeries as generators were used to operate essential services like the emergency unit, Intensive Care Unit and operating theatres.

Traffic police, particularly in Kota Kinabalu, were quick to respond to the power failure as they were deployed at key traffic intersections to guide traffic ahead of Friday’s peak school hour and office break at 11.30am.

The latest outage left Sabahans, already weary of excuses for the frequent power outages in the state, calling for the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd

..only 70% of power resumed in the state capital by 3pm and was expected to normalise by 7pm to 9pm.

Blackout in Sabah again despite govt promise

FMT Staff | January 17, 2014

The situation has angered Sabahans who were promised in November last year of fewer such outages.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah including Labuan was plunged into darkness earlier today following a  statewide blackout at 11am.

Except for Labuan which saw power restored within an hour, the rest of the state is still waiting for electricity, although some areas reported partial supply had resumed.

There has been no official word on the blackout from Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd. But a posting by a SESB staff on social media noted that the team is still trying to locate the cause of blackout.

Businesses in the city and other parts of Sabah has come to a near standstill.

In the city centre police were seen sorting out massive traffic congestions everywhere.

Meanwhile hospitals across the state are relying on generators. State Health director Dr Christina Rundi reportedly said that the generators were activated within 30 minutes of the blackout and the situation was under control.

The power outage which hit Sabah and Labuan at 11.05am today, affecting about 500,000 consumers is expected to be rectified by tonight, according to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) managing director Abdul Razak Sallim.

He said the SESB began carrying out remedial works at 12.15pm and as at 3pm, power supply in Ranau, Tawau, Labuan, Keningau, and Semporna had been fully restored while it was 70 percent in Kota Kinabalu.

“Supply was fully restored in Sandakan at 2.35pm but was disrupted again and is being rectified,” he said.

He said the SESB had yet to ascertain the cause of the outage but it was not due to insufficient supply.
