Another school found with CCTVs in toilets

PETALING JAYA: Another school in the Klang Valley has been found to have close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the students’ toilets.

A member of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of SMK USJ 12 in Subang Jaya revealed that cameras were installed in the boys’ toilets a few years ago to catch those who smoke there.

School principal Siti Salmiah Yaakob insisted that the cameras were installed outside the toilets when contacted by The Star yesterday.

However, the committee member said live footage taken from the toilets’ sink area had been viewed at the senior assistant’s office.

“Whether the camera is only directed at the sink or otherwise, having cameras in the toilet is too close for comfort.

“Not many parents are actually aware that the cameras are inside the toilets since the students never complain about it.

“They (the students) may think that it is not an issue to have the cameras in there,” said the committee member, who demanded the removal of the cameras before next week’s PTA meeting.

School ordered to remove toilet cameras

PUTRAJAYA (Sept 12, 2013): The Education Ministry has ordered the immediate removal of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the toilets at SMK Seri Sentosa.

Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the ministry instructed the school to remove the CCTV cameras on Wednesday.

“We have asked the school to remove the CCTVs in the toilets because it was inappropriate,” he told reporters after a briefing here with returning students from Egypt.

“The recording of children is prohibited as the Child Act 2001 states that video recordings of children under 18 cannot be made without the parents’ or guardians’ consent,” said SMK Seri Sentosa Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) president Premala Oyen.

A ‘mockery’ of rights

PETALING JAYA (Sept 10, 2013): Parents of SMK Seri Sentosa students have called for the immediate removal of the closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) at toilets in the school, with the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) concurring and describing the situation as “absurd”.

SMK Seri Sentosa Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) president Premala Oyen said it was ridiculous to place CCTVs in bathrooms, which are meant to be private places.

“We understand the school’s reasoning in installing CCTVs to curb vandalism, but we want them to be removed immediately in the interest of privacy,” she said.

She said the recording of children was prohibited as the Child Act 2001 states that video recordings of children under 18 cannot be made without the parents’ or guardians’ consent.

NUTP president Hashim Adnan concurred with Premala, calling the move a “mockery” of children’s rights.

“It is a big mistake to place CCTVs in an area that is supposed to be private. It is very inappropriate and the cameras must be dismantled immediately, no matter what the good intentions are behind installing them,” he said.

“If cases of vandalism in the school are as serious as suggested, they should install the CCTVs at the entrance of the toilets so you get to know who goes in and out,” he said.

“Whatever it is, no matter how many people are in favour of the CCTVs, it is fundamentally wrong to install them in toilets. Children’s rights to privacy are being infringed. What if the recording falls into the wrong hands?”

CCTVs in school toilets, ministry to probe

T K Letchumy Tamboo | Updated: September 10, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has begun investigations into allegations of a secondary school that has outraged parents by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in both its male and female toilets.

Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan confirmed that investigations into the matter are currently underway.

“We are currently investigating the allegations and also if the ministry was consulted (in approving the CCTV installation).

“We are also looking into the reason for the cameras and its impingement on the children’s privacy,” he told Astro Awani.

SMK Seri Sentosa headmistress Hajah Rahmah Abd Haji said that the CCTVs only point in one direction – towards the sinks – and cannot be moved to face the toilet cubicles. They are also too high up for students to vandalise…adding that she was the only one with access to the CCTV videos which are viewed whenever she receives a complaint from the discipline teachers.

CCTVs in school toilets

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 9, 2013): A mere two months after SK Seri Pristana was embroiled in the infamous “toilet canteen” controversy, another school has outraged parents, this time by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in both male and female toilets.

While SMK Seri Sentosa installed the 64 CCTVs costing RM100,000 in March, three months before it received approval from the Education Ministry, some parents only got to know about it today.

They were also incensed by the fact that they never received consent letters allegedly sent out by the school in June to seek their approval over the cameras.

Calling the move “tasteless”, they were shocked that videos of their children were being recorded without their consent.

Yhey said they would have objected had they known about the CCTVs, adding that they would decide today on the next course of action.

“It is fundamentally wrong to install CCTVs in toilets, no matter what the reason,” said a parent who declined to be identified.

He said despite the school’s good intentions in fighting gangsterism, cheating in examinations, cutting of classes and vandalism in toilets by installing the cameras, there were grey areas especially involving the invasion of privacy of students.

PLEASE SUBSCRIBE!!!!! http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100309/t… Outraged parents have hit out at a school in Birmingham after pupils discovered CCTV cameras in the school’s toilets. Youngsters at Grace Academy in Chelmsley Wood claim they returned from half-term to find staff had installed the cameras without notifying them or their parents.

Some parents are furious at what they say is a “total invasion of privacy” and claim some pupils are so anxious about being watched they are refusing to use the facilities.

One mother whose teenage daughter attends the school is concerned the footage could fall into the wrong hands.

She told the Sunday Mercury: “She came home from school and told me security cameras had been installed in the girl’s toilets but we didn’t know anything about it.

“You would expect the school to have consulted parents first yet we received no information and no letters have been sent home explaining this decision.”

Hi, I am surprised that the camera looks like a smoke detector. Why did the school choose to install this type of camera?

They actually had installed another type of camera in the lift but that camera is often being turned and reachable by students. This type of camera can’t be turned to face any other directions even if the students can reach it..
P/S:I study there and I know better than the reporters or rumors..
