Boyfriend beats up woman after admirer praises her FB pic
A woman sustained a black eye, bruises and other bodily injuries after being beaten by her boyfriend when he found out that another man praised and admired her beautiful photograph on Facebook last Thursday.
…
“The 52-year-old boyfriend suddenly slapped, kicked, punched and hit the victim using an axe handle, causing her to sustain a black eye, bruises on the arm and body.
“The man also chased the woman out of his house, prompting her to lodge a police report on the incident.
“The couple have been living together over the past two years and have a four-month-old daughter together. They, however, never registered their marriage,” he told reporters in George Town, Penang.
He said efforts were being done to track down the man, who had four previous records related to drugs and other crimes.

Hunters of clouded leopard tracked down thanks to Facebook faux pas

KAPIT: The long arm of the law has finally reached the three hunters said to be involved in the killing of a Clouded leopard here recently.
The hunt was launched following the posting of a photo, depicting one of the hunters with the dead animal, on social media.
Officers from Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) managed to track down the three in Kapit last week.
“Our SWAT (Swift Wildlife Action Team) from SFC Sibu was despatched to Kapit on Dec 8 after earlier investigative work had identified the probable perpetrators of the offence. All three men have admitted to being involved in the hunting incident, which led to the killing of the Clouded leopard, a ‘Totally Protected’ animal in Sarawak.
“Under the Wildlife Protection Ordinance 1998, the killing of such animal is a serious offence punishable by imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of up to RM50,000,” a statement from SFC said yesterday.

Man arrested for insulting policewoman on Facebook
KUANTAN, Nov 7 — About an hour after insulting a traffic policewoman on his Facebook page, a man was arrested at a roadblock at Jalan Teluk Sisek here, early this morning.
Kuantan police chief ACP Abdul Aziz Salleh said, earlier at around 12.30m, the 23-year-old man from Permatang Badak here was issued a summons at a roadblock by the policewoman for modifying his car exhaust.
“The suspect, who was driving a Proton Satria Neo car was reportedly unhappy with the action taken by the policewoman leading him to insult her by uploading a status to his Facebook account.
“His posting was later found out by a traffic personnel before informing to the policewoman about it,” he told reporters here today.
Unaware that his action was discovered by the police, he passed through another police roadblock while on his way home.
The suspect was arrested at that roadblock and was taken to the Kuantan Police Station for further investigations under Section 233 (1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

When Mark Zuckerberg came up with the idea of Facebook, he probably did not intend for it to help police in nabbing wanted suspects.
The social networking site did just that last Friday (April 24), all thanks to an incredibly stupid move by the wanted man.
Levi Charles Reardon, who was wanted for felony and forgery, “liked” his own wanted post on Facebook which was uploaded by Great Falls/Cascade County Crimestoppers, a non-profit organisation that aims to reduce crime.

According to the Great Fall Tribune, police records state that Reardon was arrested without incident on Friday evening.

Wanted teen taunts police on Facebook, saying ‘catch me if you can’ … then gets caught http://ow.ly/J7EmQ
A teenager was arrested after he teased police on Facebook, posting the message “catch me if you can” following an online appeal for his whereabouts.
According to The Independent, Logan Rhys James, 19, was wanted for breaching his license conditions after his release from prison on Feb 6.
He had previously been sentenced to eight months behind bars for a street knife attack.
However, a week after his release, the 19-year-old was recalled to prison for failing to retain contact with police in the county of Gwent in Wales.
Authorities posted an image of the boy on Facebook appealing for his whereabouts to which he commented: “catch me if you can wont (sic) see me slipping.”
But he did slip.
Police arrested James in Caerphilly, Wales, on Sunday (Feb 15).

TV CHANNELS SHOULD BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHAT THEY CALL THEIR FANS!
This TV channel in Singapore, Channel 8, called its supporters “三姑六婆” (BUSYBODIES).
Dear The Real Singapore,
I noticed many other Channel 8 supporters angered by a photo captain which categorized the supporters as “三姑六婆”.
The fact that the people captured in the photo are middle-aged doesn’t mean they are “三姑六婆”. This is very rude and to make matters worse, Channel 8’s administrator had deleted the photo and pretended that nothing of such happened despite angered fans complaining on their timeline.
…
My mum actually attended the event and was very insulted that the Channel 8 Facebook page administrators refer to her as a busybody gossipy nothing-better-to-do auntie (translation of what it actually means).

A PHOTO HE POSTED ON FACEBOOK WAS HIS DOWNFALL!
Scott Kelly was on the run. He regularly published photos of himself “living the high life” while on the run.
Then posted this photo on Facebook.
Scott Kelly, 33, spent seven years in prison for stabbing a pub drinker but fled last October after he was released on probation.
Rather than keeping a low profile, he often posted snaps on social networking sites, including pictures of himself enjoying a skiing holiday and others showing him relaxing in bars and restaurants with friends.
He was careful to evade detection by making sure there were no landmarks in the background, but his fun ground to a halt after he uploaded a stunning photo of a sunset.
Detectives were able to glean vital clues from the beach in the foreground such as a palm-tree lined promenade and distinctive architecture, which allowed them to identify it as Alicante.
Spanish police spotted Mr Kelly driving around Costa Blanca last month and arrested him.

Midnight arrest of Facebook user over ‘monkey’ jibe was overkill, lawyers say
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — Police were “overreacting” when they arrested a Facebook user at midnight on Thursday and remanded him for three days over a post labelling its officers as “‘monkey’ looking for extra income”, said lawyers critical of the move.
Human rights lawyer Andrew Khoo said the move appeared designed to intimidate, pointing out there was neither an urgency nor risk that the evidence would “disappear” to justify the midnight swoop carried out by the Malacca police.
“It would appear that the intention is to arrest him and place him behind bars and to perhaps intimidate him and make an example of him and to make sure everyone is duly intimidated.
“I think the police was being overzealous and possibly with the idea of sending a message to the Malaysian public and we actually can recall the IGP commenting that ‘if you insult the police, we will come after you’,” Khoo told Malay Mail Online when contacted yesterday.
Two other civil liberties lawyers — New Sin Yew and Eric Paulsen — described the Malacca police’s late-night arrest of the 32-year-old car salesman as abusive.
“Why was there a need to go to his house at midnight and obtain further three days for such a minor matter? It’s a very clear case of gross abuse of power,” said Paulsen.
New also said the Thursday midnight arrest over the Facebook post amounted to “bullying” and harassment. “The police should stop doing this. It’s not going to help their image, it’s only going to make it worse”.
Both New and Paulsen said the police should address any negative perception by the public and improve the police force’s image, instead of going after critics.

Novelist wins suit against aide over FB post
A novelist has won a suit against her personal assistant over a defamatory statement posted on Facebook.
This followed a decision by the Civil High Court last Aug 4 in allowing an application for a judgment in default by Siti Rosmizah Semail, 42, against Asmaliyana Ahmad, 24, who is also her sister-in-law.
Judicial Commissioner Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera allowed the application by the novelist, who is also a lawyer, after the defendant failed to enter an appearance within the stipulated period after the filing of the suit.
Today, the court heard Siti Rosmizah’s gave evidence on damages which would be assessed by the court.
…
On Dec 18 last year, Siti Rosmizah filed a suit for RM3 million against Asmaliyana, claiming that later had posted about 19 defamatory statements on her (defendant) Facebook page between April 21 and July 24 last year.
In the statement of claim, Siti Rosmizah stated that she was the recipient of the ‘Pilihan Pembaca Popular Berita Harian 2009′ award, and that the postings of the defamatory statements had tarnished her reputation as a lawyer and a respected writer.
She also claimed it also affected her income as she was no longer invited to give talks on novel writing by publishers.
She was seeking RM1.5 million in general damages and another RM1.5 million in aggravated damaged, as well as interest, cost and other relief which the court deems fit.

Yip had allegedly posted strong words filled with expletives saying, “Eh hello bastards…I know its Hari Raya and all but please … keep your prayers to the almighty off some loudspeaker at 6.45 in the morning…it’s annoying…”
The youth however was quick to delete the post and apologise after being cautioned by several Facebook users.
In a search done by Malaysiakini, it was discovered that Yip also has since deactivated his Facebook account.

Facebook user lied about 3 cops and 2 civil defence officers dying in Little India riot
A technician was fined $5,000 yesterday (Jun 26) for making a “reckless” Facebook post falsely claiming that five full-time national servicemen had been killed in the Little India riot.
According to a report on My Paper, the day after the riot on Dec 8, Desmond Lum Mun Hui, 28, wrote: “Yesterday riot cause 3 spf and 2 cd dead.. all nsf.. haiz.. sg..”
The terms “spf” and “cd” referred to the Singapore Police Force and Civil Defence.
He admitted to transmitting the false message from his home in Jurong West.
…
..The offending conduct in this case consists of a transmission of a fabricated message out of a misguided and immature desire to attract attention on a social-media platform.
“The offender was, at most, reckless as to the potential mischievous consequences,” he said, adding that the post would have alarmed people who saw it.

Man signs into Facebook in middle of alleged burglary, gets caught
MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota man is in jail because he logged on to Facebook — during his alleged crime.
Police say Nicholas Wig checked his profile from a home he broke into — then didn’t log off.
“When I came home from work that day, that screen was laying right here,” homeowner James Wood. “Credit cards, cash, for a soccer tournament, checkbook, watch. Kinda started to panic.”
Wood notified police, but then noticed something on his computer.
“He uh, HA!!! He pulled up his Facebook profile and left it up,” Wood said.
Police say Nicholas Wig, 26, had checked Facebook while stealing from the house and forgot to log out. So Wood updated Wig’s status.
“I shared his photo and said watch out for this guy he’s a thief,” Wood said.
People kept commenting on that post. Wood also left his phone number asking anyone to call with information on where to find Wig.
Wood received a text at 7 p.m. From Wig himself.
“I replied you left a few things at my house last night how can I get them back to you,” Wood said.
Wig agreed to meet with Wood under the impression he could give back Wood’s recycled cellphone in exchange for his clothes he had left at the home.
“World’s dumbest criminals,” Wood said.
When Wood spotted him heading toward the house, he called police.

In a separate public post, he had also taken a picture of a taxi driver, calling him a “retard” for wearing gloves and covering himself with towels in 37-degrees-Celsius weather.

“Those comments go against our core corporate and family values that are based on trust, mutual understanding and are respectful of diversity,” a spokesperson wrote, adding that CrossInvest is a family business built up in Singapore.
Accordingly, CrossInvest Asia and Mr Casey have parted ways with immediate effect,” concluded the statement, which overnight obtained more than 470 likes and 355 shares.

Anton Casey and family leave for Perth amid threats
Briton Anton Casey, who sparked a furore by calling public transport users “poor people”, left Singapore for Perth yesterday because of threats made against his family.
The 39-year-old, who took along his wife – former Singapore beauty queen Bernice Wong – and five-year-old son to Western Australia state, also apologised again for his remarks, this time offering to do community work.
“I hope the people of Singapore will allow me to volunteer my time and resources to community projects in order to make amends for my mistakes,” he wrote in an e-mail response last night to queries from The Straits Times.

‘Daddy, who are all these poor people?’ How Anton Casey’s Facebook comments dissed Singapore
Name: Anton Casey
Age: 39.
Appearance: Pasty expat Brit.
That’s not very nice. I don’t think you’ll find many people who have a good word to say about Mr Casey.
What does he do? He’s a fund manager.
In that case, fire away. Amazingly, Casey’s job is the least unattractive thing about him.
What’s his problem? Casey – who lives in Singapore – had to leave his Porsche at the garage, obliging him to take the train.
Good for him to see how the other half lives. He then posted a picture of his son sitting on said train on Facebook, along with the caption: “Daddy, where is your car & who are all these poor people?”
Nice. Casey later posted another picture of his son sitting in the newly repaired Porsche, with the words: “Ahhhhhhhhh, reunited with my baby. Normal service can resume, once I have washed the stench of public transport off me …!”
He doesn’t come across well on social media, does he? No. Soon another of Casey’s Facebook postings went viral: a picture of his bundled-up taxi driver, with the caption: “Today’s cabbie retard award goes to … Mr Arm Warmers, stripy mittens & towel on the lap man … After all it’s only 37C outside.”

A 22-year-old man is under investigation by local police for a string of offensive remarks he allegedly posted under the fictitious name “Heather Chua” on Facebook.
In a statement issued on Friday, police said several members of the public have filed police reports against his posts, which angered many Internet users. The first, police said, was filed on 3 January this year.
Police said they determined the 22-year-old’s identity through “extensive investigations”. The man is now assisting police with their investigations.
…
Using the moniker “Heather Chua”, the man allegedly posted comments insulting the work of National Servicemen, ITE graduates and Malays, among a series of other things. “Chua”’s posts, which were frequently geotagged to Sentosa Cove, ignited the ire of many Facebook users, prompting the efforts of some to track down who “she” was.
..
Several bloggers accused him of creating fake modelling events in a bid to trick aspiring models to send their portfolio pictures to him. They also said in various posts on Facebook that the photographs of luxury cars “Chua” posts on “her” Facebook profile contain digitally altered licence plates that do not exist on Singapore’s vehicle listings.
The female images used as “Chua”’s profile pictures were also allegedly stolen from Thai actress and blogger Pimpatchara Vajrasevee. The latter also previously took to her Instagram account to call “Chua” out for stealing her pictures, but she allegedly denied doing so in comments on Vajrasevee’s pictures.
According to screengrabs of “Chua”’s account, “her” birthday is 25 July 1973, and listed the University of Phoenix, National University of Singapore, Temasek Junior College and Raffles Girls’ School among her places of education.
By Wednesday, the man’s Facebook profile had been taken down.

Your Facebook posts, tweets could cost you a job
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 — Recruiter Muslim Nazari thought the 28-year-old applying for the sales manager position seemed too good to be true with his impressive resume and impeccable interview scores.
Just to be certain, Muslim scanned his Facebook profile and found incriminating pictures of the once-promising job candidate using recreational drugs at parties.
The potential hire also used the same social media space to complain about his manager.
“He didn’t get the job,” Muslim told The Malay Mail Online in a recent interview.
“Those were the two biggest red flags. We don’t hire people who are involved with illegal activities. It will affect the company’s image.
“We also question the values of people who speak ill of their previous company on social media,” he added.
…
Recruitment agencies said recently that Malaysian employers and those around the world are increasingly using Facebook, LinkedIn and microblogging site Twitter to screen job applicants, in order to look at their professional and cultural fit with the organisation.
With Malaysia’s Facebook population now numbering a whopping estimate of 13.3 million users, this could pose potential risks to job hopefuls who tend to live their lives out on Facebook or other social media outlets.
As a result, a racial insult, religious threat, the incessant use of vulgarities or any evidence of inappropriate behaviour on these easily accessible social networking sites, could cost these candidates their dream job.

Tourist falls off pier while checking Facebook
A tourist in Australia had to be rescued by police after plunging off a pier while browsing Facebook on her phone, officials have said
The Taiwanese woman was walking along St Kilda pier, near Melbourne, on Monday night when she became distracted by her Facebook feed and plummeted into the chilly water of Port Phillip Bay, Victoria state police said.
A witness called for help and police rushed by speedboat to the woman’s aid. They found her floating in the water 20 minutes later, about 20 meters (65 feet) from the pier.
“She was still out in the water lying on her back in a floating position because she told us later that she couldn’t swim,” Senior Constable Dean Kelly of the state water police told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially she apologized and said sorry.”
The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Son banned from insulting mother on Facebook after argument over computer
A man in South Wales has been told by a court he cannot insult his mother on Facebook after getting into an argument with her over his computer.
Samuel Hinkin, 20, was also jailed for six weeks following the incident where he kicked through a door and threatened to burn down the family house in Bridgend.
He pleaded guilty to criminal damage and cannabis possession at Bridgend magistrates’ court.
Presiding magistrate John Viney warned him about posting anything negative about his 53-year-old mother Susan.
He said: ‘You should not contact her directly or indirectly and you should also not write anything derogatory about her on Facebook or Bebo.’
Hinkin’s barrister David Sedgewick said his client had been left without a home to go to following the argument and going to jail would provide him with shelter.
‘The only advantage of him being sent to prison is that some accommodation will be arranged for him,’ he added.

Radiographer’s nasty remarks about a patient on Facebook goes viral
7:08 PM
Two Facebook posts by a radiographer containing nasty remarks about his patient and his workplace have been making its rounds online.
…When The Straits Times contacted the radiographer, he wanted to be known only as Mr Lee, 25 and would only say he worked in a local hospital. He has since removed the posts from his account.
He added that his postings were just “innocent rants about a bad day at work”, and insisted that he was not being unprofessional. “I didn’t put in my company’s name, or any information that will identify the patient…It was just an innocent posting and I didn’t know it would spread online,” he said. “We are taught to have compassion for our patients, but at the end of the day, a job is still a job. There will be bad days, but I have always been professional when dealing with my patients,” he added.
