Uphill task for Himpunan Hijau petitioners

It is no easy task collecting one million signatures but the Himpunan Hijau activists seeking to petition against the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) which produces toxic wastes faced more than just hard work.

NONELeong Kin Aw, who spent the past few nights at Dataran Merdeka with movement leader Wong Tack, said he was particularly upset over some of the sarcastic remarks hurled against them as they go on their rounds collecting signatures.

“Some of them do not understand that environmental protection is everyone’s effort. A few of them said mean things to us. Still, we responded to them nicely.

“If we were in a restaurant, there would be a table of people speaking out loudly against us, even saying things like ‘you guys must have been paid to do this’,” Leong said in an interview with Malaysiakini on Monday.

Leong, who is a basketball coach for primary and secondary school students, has applied for a week’s leave to help out in the signature campaign against the rare earth processing plant in Gebeng, Pahang.

According to him, watching all his comrades leave Dataran Merdeka to get back to work after the weekend was over was his most unforgettable memory.

“We are still here because we can apply for leave, but not them. I am the only one left here now,” Leong said.

Merdeka every day to support the campaign since it kicked off on Saturday.

NONETan said she too met many unfriendly people when collecting signatures but she nevertheless responded to them in a pleasant manner.

“We had met many unconcerned people who misunderstood us, who felt we were asking for donations. But many of them signed the petition after we explained the issue to them.

“Some of them even gave us money and told us to go enjoy a good meal and not to work so hard. It was very touching,” Tan said.

Bersih and Himpunan held their last joint mass rally on April 28, 2012 in Kuala Lumpur. They claimed that 300,000 people had attended.

Himpunan Hijau mulling joint rally with Bersih

Anti-Lynas group Himpunan Hijau has expressed its interest in once more joining hands with electoral reform pressure group Bersih to hold another mass rally.

NONEAccording to Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tack (left), the group has “unofficially” spoken with Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan on the matter.

However, Wong, who had stayed at Dataran Merdeka for the past three days for the one million signature drive against the Lynas rare earth plant, said Himpunan Hijau has yet to formally discuss the proposal and decide on it.

Himpunan Hijau’s campaign reach halfway mark
9:23PM Aug 25, 2013

Himpunan Hijau has crossed the halfway mark in their bid to collect 1 million signatures against Lynas’ rare earth refinery in Gebeng, Pahang.

The group’s leader Wong Tack, who are camping out at Dataran Merdeka since yesterday to raise awareness for their cause, said he and his team were working hard, rain or shine, to achieve their target.

When Malaysiakini visited Wong this afternoon, he and his team were seen collecting signatures, despite the drizzle.

“Until we reach one million signatures, we are not going anywhere. So if you still see me here the next time you come, you’ll know I’m not done yet,” quipped Wong.

Once they have achieved their objectives, Himpunan Hijau will submit the petition to the Agong, Parliament and the Australian government, among others.

Meanwhile, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and secretary-general Lim Guan Eng visited Himpunan Hijau’s campsite to show moral support.

Bkt Merah victim goes to KL to back anti-Lynas petition

The ongoing Himpunan Hijau nationwide one million sign collection campaign against the Lynas rare earth plant in Gebeng, Pahang saw the special appearance of former Asian Rare Earth (ARE) factory worker, Lai Kwan from Bukit Merah in a show of support.

The septuagenarian came all the way from Ipoh, Perak, to arrive at Merdeka Square at about 10.55am to submit the signatures she had collected from her home state.

Lai, wearing dark sunglasses, headed slowly towards the square with the aid of a walking stick and straightaway some Himpunan Hijau members approached her to welcome her.

Lai said she had insisted on participating in this campaign to raise public awareness on pollution.

“The ARE factory at my hometown is so much smaller compared to that of the Kuantan one, but the damages are already very devastating,” she said.

Asked if she was tired after travelling from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur, Lai enthused: “My legs are weak and can’t walk for long, but this time the hard work is worth it.”

 Driven to prevent past’s return

She added that she had been gathering signatures from her Ipoh friends for the past few weeks before handing them over to Himpunan Hijau chairperson Wong Tack.
