Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has described proposals to introduce a law to make the flying of the Malaysian flag compulsory during the month of Merdeka as “loony”.

He added that his former colleague, Communication and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek who put forward the proposal was politicising the issue of patriotism.

” Here, people are loyal but because they want to politicise it, they label a group as not being loyal and somehow if they put up a flag then people become loyal,” Zaid (left) said at the 7th Annual Malaysian Student Leaders Summit.

He added that if by merely putting up a flag it would make someone more loyal, the government would have done it long ago.Zaid, who was fielding questions from students, said, like patriotism policing, he was also against moral policing.

The Communications and Multimedia Ministry will study the need to introduce a law to make it compulsory for every premises to fly the Jalur Gemilang throughout the month of Merdeka.

Its Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said such a law was necessary because many premises and buildings, especially those owned by private organisations do not understand the need or importance of flying the ‘Jalur Gemilang’ to show their love for the nation.

“Currently we have not reached a stage to enforce any law on such premises or buildings whether they are private or government… now it is voluntary.

“However, I have seen many private buildings not responding to the call to fly the ‘Jalur Gemilang’,” he told reporters at the ‘Pocket Show 2013’ programme at Uptown Danau Kota last night.

“Pocket Show” is a programme organised by the Information Department, aimed at distributing “Jalur Gemilang” in and around the city.
